Resident Evil Series: Pre-RE5 Playthrough Thread

Im concerned RE 5 ignores Code:Veronica continuity because in the trailer for RE 5 wesker says "we last met at the spencer estate wasnt it?" and it looks like hes talking to crhis. If he is, then they are ignoring Code Veronica since Wesker harasses chris on that island prison facility and later faces off against him in a big battle at the Umbrella artic facility which pretty much set up a big final confrontation in a sequel.

The Umbrella artic facility had a copy of the Spencer mansion, on the other hand, maybe he isn't talking to chris....

hmm well technically wouldnt it be the Ashcroft mansion since those 2 siblings seemed to own the place?

It's not directly explained, but you'll get some huge hints if you look closely at the 2 trailers from TGS.

There's a fight between Wesker and Chris in a mansion with Spencer, and you can notice Chris looks much less fit than in all the other scenes and he's wearing a different outfit. That has to be a flashback scene, or part of the introduction to the game. And that's the scene Wesker is referring to.

RE0:
Game gets way too much hate. I still think it's a great game. I think Billy Coen is a really cool character with a cool (but sadly underused) backstory. I always thought Chris Redfield was incredibly bland as a lead character, I wish someone like Coen was the main character in the series:/

Anyway playing with the Rebecca leather outfit (I <3 it) and Billy's suit. I really like the idea of alternate costumes and wish they'd put more like the 3D Tales games but the little that usually show up are usually cool.

RE0's main major flaw is the lack of an item box. Scattering and dropping items everywhere can be a major pain in the neck if you're not use to the geography of the place, but it's still not THAT much worse than the other games since those also force you to backtrack because inventory is limited. I always felt like RE needed SH's inventory, but RE4's is actually pretty cool as well.

The FMVs are still great and the graphics are still amazing.

Another minor quirk with the game are the enemies. Giant versions of insects just don't sound or look cool to me. Thankfully the staple enemies like the zombies and Tyrants are AWESOME in RE0.

Two character system isn't much different but makes for some cool puzzles, especially the one that you do to stop the train.

All in all old school RE still remains fun and I find RE0 enjoyable.

No RE 0 for me personally is where I found the game to be stale and redundent...and I was a HUGE RE fan back in the day.

Before you enter "the" mansion you must explore....a mansion? the fuck?

The character switching was fine. The story and overall atmosphere was just so so horrible once you left the train...they could have done a LOT more.

I liked it for what it was, but I do agree that the Train was by far the best section of the game, and was actually one of the best classic RE-styled areas.

how about i just play re4 and call it a day

oh wait, there isn't a console version of re4 that looks remotely acceptable on an hdtv

how about i just wait for re5

And it was more evident after playing REmake which has the best atmosphere of the series by far.

I picked up REmake, RE0 and RE4 Wii last month - currently playing through REmake with Jill on easy
and getting stuck a lot
- yeah yeah, whatever, I'm having fun. Next up is RE0 and then I'll replay RE4 for Wii.

I've never played RE2 or 3...but I don't know if I'll be able to play them after the orgasmic graphics of REmake and RE0. Are there any texture mods or anything for the PC versions?

Oh and those RE4 PC shots are seriously tempting me to order it...

Even with albert's texture pack the pc version is pretty lacking, resolution aside. :(
Also while I appreciate the effort I kind of dislike how he went ahead and added his own textures into the mix. I would love a "GC textures only" pack. I really hate all these user made textures, especially the ones for Leon. They just don't look right. Too grainy.
I usually end up deleting the folder that contains his model textures.

But man I would kill for an HD rerelease for 360, ps3 and PC. Getting it on all three would be easy once they ported the game to framework. BH4 with GC textures, lighting and models at 1080p running at 60fps...*dies*

I do agree with you there, although I appreciate the effort that was put in to the pack. It was nice playing through some areas that looked "the same but different" if only for novelties sake.

I'd instantly purchase a HD RE4 port, but alas, it doesn't seem likely. :(

the only one I'm considering playing is RE2, but when I went to check my PS1 jewel cases, it wasn't there (neither was MMX4 for some reason). There's a spy, stealing my awesome Capcom games.

My meager collection. ;) Severely lacking in dc/gc releases atm though. I had the original DC release of CV and even the GC re4 at some point, but I'm afraid they're lost to time.

I want to start a series playthrough again, but don't know if I want to start with the original biohazard or the director's cut, mostly because of the ending themes. "Still dawn" is nice, but so is Yume de Owarasenai. :(

If strafing was a little faster I think they'd be fun enemies for RE5.
I think they look retarded and they are not fun to dodge.

I just really don't care for this one. The knife is so weirdly overpowered.

Saw the thread, great idea, decided to go 0 -> REmake -> 2 ( on 64 ) -> 3 ( on cube ) -> CVX( on PS2 ) -> RE4. Started 0 with my buddy 2 days ago, and we are already up to the church. There is a weird thing for giant animal bosses in zero, first 3 bosses were Scorpion( ? ), Centipede, and Bat very strange. Also Ms. Chambers is ridiculously useless compared to Billy, she mixes herbs and then is used for that one terrible chemical puzzle. Also, why didn't they add optional second controller support for the other character? The system where I move them with the C-Stick is ridiculous. Other than that much enjoying classical RE Style.

I really need to try Zero and REmake again. Haven't played those since PAL launch. That's a VERY long time. I might even give CVX another go, to get a dose of Chris vs Wesker before RE5 comes along.

Now, if only I could stop time so I could play them all, go to work, do well at uni and other assorted things.

Rez, you should really grab Alberts texture mod. He ripped the Gamecube textures and ported them to the PC. The one you have now just adds embossing and various other horrible sharpening effects to the existing textures. It looks awful :P

Hey, I liked it. :p

I've already finished my current playthrough, but I'll be sure to pick it up next time I replay it (which could be soonish). Thanks. :)

The bandersnatchers are really awful, but thankfully the bowgun + powder works wonders on 'em.

Well for your first paragraph...is that really the fault of RE0? REmake I believe gets a free pass because it's a remake, people expected more out of RE0, but as a traditional RE0, there's nothing horrific about its gameplay.

The mansion was pretty crappy compared to THE mansion yeah, but revisiting some old RE2 locales, the Train and some other places were cool. The prerendered backgrounds are gorgeous and more dynamic than ever.

Story sucked yeah, but this is RE...when did RE ever have an acceptable storyline? Atmosphere I can't agree; it's typical old school RE atmosphere, just that the lame enemies sometimes hurt it.

I even brought RE: DS, can't believe that, RE games on handhelds = not scary.

Still, the knife-slashing was quite fun :lol

I skipped ahead a bit and played through all of the PS2 version of CODE: Veronica. I'll do my write up later, but for now, I took new pics of my RE collection! :D

HOLY FUCKING CRAP

you win :(

So, I played through the PS2 version of CV. I said I'd play it on GameCube, but I realize I hadn't completed the PS2 version since 2001. I played it on the PS3 via BC.

I was reminded of why I hardly play the PS2 version. The game had this weird blur to its look, something that wasn't present in the DC or GC versions. Other than that, they're pretty identical. I actually haven't play through CV in about 2 years, so it was nice going through the rounds again.

CV was the first game in the series for me, so it's quite special. I loved the variety of locations and the general layout between them. CV's scope felt a lot wider than even RE3's because the game constantly switches locations. True, there's quite a bit of backtracking, but the overall game map is compressed enough so that it never really is a problem. I also prefer CV's take on the zapping system over RE2's; RE2's was plain repetitive, while I found some of CV's zapping system twists to be clever (like Chris using the military proofs that Claire had used earlier).

Graphically, I remember it blowing my mind at 13. Nowadays though, while I don't think CV looks ugly, I can definitely see the low-res, blurry textures and low polygon count. RE3 held up a lot better in the visuals department, IMO.

Steve and Alfred seriously cracked me up, when I didn't mind them before. I don't think Wesker has come off as sinister as he did in CV in the three games he appeared in after (RE0, RE4, REUC, and I guess REmake, but that doesn't really count).

I still prefer CV above any of the PS1-era REs, probably because it was my first. I dunno if I like it better than REmake or RE0 though. But CV can be classified as the first truly epic RE due to the return of Wesker and the spread of the series beyond Raccoon City.

Ugh, yeah. That drives me crazy. I'm still waiting for DC emulation to improve to pick up the CV complete version.

I really liked CV as well. Playing as Claire and Chris in the same game was awesome; add Wesker to the mix and we got ourselves a solid RE game.

Bandersnatches were a cool enemy, I wish they'd make a come back at some point.

For CV is when the series went from cheesy retarded to holy shit this is fucking retarded. That combine with Steve, plus the ridiculous backtracking and fetch quests, turned me off to the series until 4 came out. I have played Remake, which is a nice update of a classic, but I've stayed the hell away from 0. After reading the LP of it on lparchive, I'm glad I did.

Still the entire series is full of braindead morons, and I dont mean the zombies. The only characters I remotely like are Leon and Claire.

I think I'm going to try to finish out my RE4 Wii edition, since I never played the new stuff they brought over from the PS2 version.

Ok I just started this, I will go in order of release. I will be playing the DS version of RE original mainly cause it has no load times. I will be playing the original mode obviously. I will play as Jill cause that is my primary character for RE1, I have always loved her side more than Chris, why, cause of a red bearded badass of a man named Barry Burton (I heart Barry).

So the original, no game in this series even comes close to holding such a special place in my heart. Its not my favorite RE game, but its by far the most important to me. This is the game I know by heart, I know the lines, I know every room, every enemy, every scare, everything. Its the game that changed my whole view on gaming, its the reason I am here at a site like this. If I had entered into this series at a later point I doubt I would ever have the same love for this series, its all cause of this one game that I am the fan that I am.

The night I got this game, way back in 96, is seriously one of my best childhood memories, a sleep over with my brother and a friend, we stayed up playing this mindblowing game, something we had never seen before. I will never ever forget it, none of us will forget it, we still talk about that night to this day. This game was so ahead of its time, so groundbreaking. Every time I play this game all those feelings come rushing back

Ok enough about it, time to play it. I will start tomorrow and probably end it tomorrow, I can beat this game rather quickly. I will be back with all sorts of thoughts after I play.

(I wrote that last night on a different site, below is what is what I just wrote now)

Ok just made it to the guardhouse, so far its extremely easy. I have about 10 full life herbs stored in the item box, I got tons of ammo, I am all set for the rest of the game already.

I must say that no game has writing as amazing as this game. Anyone can write a good game story with quality dialogue, but it takes a true genius to come up with stuff like " Now its Wesker's time to disappear" "Well it can't be helped" or "WOAH! This hall is dangerous!" or my personal favorite "take this weapon, its extremely powerful, especially against living things." MASTERPIECE writing, no RE game even comes close!

Oh and Richard's voice actor, OMG :lol . But the rest of the cast delivers the lines so well, Barry's voice actor even with the moronic lines he got delivers them with such enthusiam, he's great. You know whats really funny, all the files have excellent writing. Why were they able to translate that but not the dialogue.

I noticed something new, in the Researcher's Will he mentions he couldn't write before cause of the man in sunglasses, I dont even remember that line. I didn't realize there was a hint to Wesker working at Umbrella that early on in the game.

Random question, did you guys ever try to light the large boiler that is outside where the dogs jump at you. The first time I played I figured I could light it and something would happen.

So have been playing as I always do, trying to conserve as much as I can early on. I always have a heirarchy of what weapons to use against what enemies. I almost always use pistols against zombies, dogs and birds. I use shotguns againt certain zombies, spiders, and hunters. By the later stages of the game I leave my pistol behind cause its all hunters so I just carry a shotgun and bazooka, acid rounds baby. For bosses I bring in all the powerful guns I got. By the end of the game I always have so much ammo I could have run through the game and killed everyone.

Time to continue.

All done, final stats 2 hours 50 minutes, no deaths. If I had remembered that the DS version didn't have the original credits I wouldn't have played this version. Also there were all sorts of little tweaks and changes to the game.

I love the music in the guardhouse, espcially in the underground tank. I did the V-Jolt just cause its a cool little puzzle, but that meant I missed the Barry with a flamethrower cutscene, oh well. You know I dont think I ever realized what the poll table in the spider room was for, it was for the door to the v-jolt room, I always messed around with the control panel I thought that was a puzzle. I like the mansion of this version better than REmake, but the rest of the game especially the guardhouse so much better in REmake, they did a great job fleshing it all out.

After the guardhouse comes the hunters, probably my favorite enemy in the series, still I had so much ammo I was blowing the arms off like nothing. You know the second snake fight and how it creates a hole in the ground that leads to the underground section, why in the hell is there a grave in a room that has no exits but to go down into the basement and is under the floor of another room. Why is the ladder from the basement there, you climb up the ladder and end up in this enclosed tiny space with no way out. Every other part of the house at least makes sense, this one doesn't.

You know that room with the book shelves covering the ladder that goes down to the tank, well I always push the shelves to each end. Every time you come back into the room the shelves are both placed on the right side, I have always noticed it.

In the sewers I chose to get the good ending. "UNrico!" You know this game probably has the best puzzles in the series. You got the painting room, V-jolt, the waterfall to get into the sewers, john/ada one, all the puzzles in the series really just follow what this game did.

I went for the best ending so in the lab I got all mo-discs. Are the naked zombies the only respawing enemies in the series? Right after Wesker gets knocked out by Barry they are talking about the Tyrant and Barry says something about going into destroy the Tyrant and Jill inexplicably responds with "You are so optimistic". Awesome. I made sure to visit Wesker's dead body in the boiler room.

Love this game, its simple though, I think RE2 was a really nice jump in terms of the action and pacing.

Next up RE2 my favorite of the old style games.

Finished Claire A, what an experience. Lets start from the beginning, the intro movie, which is fantastic. I remember at the time of release the CG was like incredible now its ugly.

What a way to start a game, right out in the middle of the streets of Raccoon City. When you play the first game and then play this one and the first thing you see is that scene, with all those zombies, fire everywhere, its such an improvement over the simplisity of the original. RE2 looks better, I love the way the characters move, I think its the most fluid of the games, the speed at which they run is perfect. The amount of enemies is increased, the animations are increased, the amount of weapons are through the roof, it just improved upon the first in almost every single way. Oh and the music, wow what a soundtrack! Even the voice acting is leagues better than RE1.

So the start is a fun romp through the streets of RC, I love the backgrounds, they did a great job. In the area of the bus, before you enter it, there is like a resturant in the bottom the screen and there is this guy dead on a table, he has these things stuck on his back, I dont think I ever noticed, are they knives?

The RPD is such a great location, its hard to top the mansion but RPD is almost as iconic and well designed I think. It's filled with all sorts of scares, hell the whole game is, easily the best scares of the series. And some are imaginative too, like outside the RPD in that power station, when you open the door, the animation comes up but a bunch of zombies come at you. Then they just play with you, like you see glass, so you know something is coming out but it doesn't (well until the next scenario). Or the hands through the wood barracade, awesome. It really captures the feel of a zombie infestation. The zombies themselves are so much more interesting cause you can tear them apart. Once I was getting bit, I pushed him off and his hand stayed grabbing on to my sholder, love that.

BTW who is Michael and why does he have a festival on the 29th of September? :P

I love Chief Irons, so creepy his whole story and that dungeon room. He delivers one of the best lines of the series, "Everyone's gonna die!" Then you go off into the sewers, to the different Umbrella stations, on the tram car with the excellent Birkin boss fight (the music!!!), giant alligator, spark gun, Anette's story, it feels like a grand adventure.

It all leads into the Umbrella lab, one of the best locations in all the series. I love it when you restore power, open up that one shutter and the plants rise up behind it. Then there is that ladder room with that HUGE plant thing on the side, classic case of a lab gone horribly wrong. Oh and the moth room, the eggs all over the outside, the creepy ass inside. You got lickers coming out of the ceiling, plants all over (which you can turn poisonious, I love that the game tricks you), then the self destruct sequence goes off and that music starts up, what a rush! This game is freaking epic!!!! I LOVE THIS GAME!!!!!

I don't think any of the classic RE games matched the intensity of RE2. Also neither of them pushed the series so much, even with all the big graphical jumps we had, none of the games had as big a jump in the overall scale and gameplay as RE1 to RE2. It's simply a masterpiece.

And I am only half way done with the full story, woo! Time to do Leon B and play the true genius of this game, the alternate scenario.

Oh and my final stats were 3 hours 30 minutes, no deaths. B rank.

My little collection:

img0068fv8.jpg

As you see I, unlike cvxfreak for instance, see no reason in it to keep more than one version of an RE. Had RE:CV for PS2 and sold it. RE2 for PS1 - sold. RE4 for GC - sold (because it the US-Version didn't work on the Wii anymore; don't like the Waggle-Controls in 4...). Not on the pic, but I (of course) also have the archives book. Since I know the story in and out it was useless from the start, but hey, it's looking good in my cabinet. ;)
Degeneration will join this as soon as it's finally released here in Germany. RE5 on day one of course.

And yeah, I always "wear" Resident Evil with me. Eat this all you wannabe freaks. :p

img0069yf9.jpg

Hardcore-Fan since 1997 (I think at least... *lol*). I just know that when I first laid eye on Resident Evil, it was playing in the future. Means, I played it before July 98.

About the playthorugh before RE5: Not with me this time. Did it before RE4 came out and it's really hard since it takes so much time - and now it would be even longer with RE4 AND RE UC. Nono... When it strikes me, I'll do a complete walkthrough again. Like I do every 1-2 years.

Finished REmake on Cube last year for the first time and it actually went pretty high on to my list of greatest videogames ever. Everything from difficulty and the amazing design of the mansion to the eerie and beautiful audiovisual presentation was perfect. Yeah there's a game I'm able to call perfect.

The Lisa thing was so fucking creepy/moving/sad. Never saw a thing like that coming in a videogame like this.

Capgods.

I just went through the entire series for pretty much the first time. Here's a little bit of background:

I had played RE1 on PS1 very briefly at a friends place when it came out, thought it was very cool but ended up forgetting about it. I had a ps1 by the time RE2 came out and the rental place only rented 1 disc at a time, I think I finished Leon's story once on easy back then.

RE3 I never really touched and CV I rented with a DC back then, got up to the creepy ashcroft estate and had to return the DC.

Played the shit out of RE4 on GC.

So that's my background with the series, never spent any serious amount of time with anything other than RE4.

So after playing through all of them back to back I'd have to say RE3 is by far my favorite. It's fast and really well paced, easily the most replayable of the bunch. The live decisions are really cool and the game has the coolest settings as far as I'm concerned. Nemesis keeps things fun and the dodging system is just really nice. The game moves along really fast which is love.

All the epilogues are fucking awesome! I ended up replaying the game a shitload to get them. Anyone else really love this game? It seems like it's everyones least favorite.... I don't get it!

I dont think its everyones least favorite, I think zero wins that but its always a discussion with those two. RE3 does get a bad rap but I think its cause of when it came out. We came off the high that was RE2, a masterpiece of a game, and two new RE games were annouced, RE3 and RECV. RE3 seemed like the side story while CV was the one that looked to expand everything and thats how it was. RE3 too me was just not as good as RE2, it was a let down. It was a great fun game but just not at that same level, then a few months later CV comes out and is amazing. So RE3 gets sandwiched between two all time great RE games and so it gets a bad rap.

Yeah, I do see that it's usually RE0 or RE3 that people say are the worst of the main series games. And, I've heard many more "Code Veronica is best" comments than "Code Veronica is worst" ones.

I never finished Code Veronica. My DC save got messed up, but I have been dying to get back to that game.

All of the main RE games are great, though. There are "worst" ones, of course, and I would probably say that RE0 goes in that place, but that's not saying much. RE0 was a very fun game, and had some interesting cooperative gameplay elements and puzzles. In fact, I very much got an RE2 vibe from it at times, which was great, since I love RE2.

As for RE3, while I was never big on the idea of it taking place mostly on city streets (I liked the more contained feeling in RE0, REmake, RE2), I'd say it was better than most people make it out to be. In fact, Nemesis is pretty much what made the game scary and awesome. You just never knew when he was going to show up.

Love this series. As skeptical as I am about RE5 maintaining my interest in the same ways as the other games, there's no way I won't give it a playthrough. As an RE fan I just couldn't live with myself for not seeing the next chapter unfold.
