Resident Evil Series: Pre-RE5 Playthrough Thread

Magicpaint said:
I would like to play RE2 again (N64 version is my favourite) - each time I play it, I always tell myself that I'll try and see what the fuss is all about, but I usually start to lose interest when I reach the mid sections and then I just can't bring myself to finish each scenario. I like the OST and I think enemy designs are cool, but other than that I find the pacing to be very pedestrian-like (much like CV, but I enjoyed the freaky, cheesy story there at least!), especially compared to the other REs.

I would love a remake of this game, REmake style. I say so because I didn't much like the original but the REmake is easily one of my favourite games ever.

The canny sound in the N64 version is unbearable!

This thread made me get RE 4 PC. Its..... strange booting up the game and seeing an Ubisoft logo.

Did you get a box copy? I really want a digital copy because I don't feel like waiting for shipping. :lol

I remember buying a collection just like that on eBay back in 2003 (minus RE4). Ah, sweet memories. :D

I'll mention this to one of my friends, he's been meaning to get in to the series (having only played 4 and REmake, and loving both).

Resident Evil 2

At the point where you encounter Irons for the first time; playing this makes me think about how easy RE2 is compared with the other games. Still love it, but a bit to easy.

Biohaze.com and I are working together to get a Biohazard Game SKU Gallery up onto the website for viewing. I'm scanning SKUs from all major regions.

Check it out: http://www.biohaze.com/game_gallery.html :)
Already been done http://www.crimson-ceremony.net/lostreleases/re-game/index.html

I'm really glad I bought my RE games from the UK. I've got a really small non-intrusive BBFC logo rather than a big fugly OFLC rating sticker. Same with RE Zero, but mine is the first print. I wonder how much my collection would go for these days =/

Yeah, I know what you mean. I have seen Irons die and I'm actually collecting materials to synthesise DEVIL now. It's amazing how easy it is, I remember the game being so goddamn hard =/ Or maybe I'm just thinking of Tofu. :lol

Scenario A is a cakewalk. Scenario B is slightly harder (and scary as fuck on your first playthrough). Hunk and Tofu are kinda hard, but still fairly easy with enough experience.

Damnit!

I borrowed a Wii from my friend so I could finally play RE4 Wii Edition, and I had a gamecube controller I could use (I don't wanna use the wiimote, yeah yeah, I'm crazy). When packaging everything together I forgot to take a nunchuck, but I got everything else.

But the darn game refuses to even boot without a nunchuck connected! Is there any way to get around this considering the game is supposed to work 100% with the gamecube controller?

Edit:
"* To use a Gamecube Controller, plug it into the top of the Wii then unhook the
nunchuk or classic controller from the remote while the game is on."

DARNIT!

Resident Evil Code Veronica:

Now this is the game I could not wait for after RE2. The DC was coming out, its graphics were unlike anything we had ever seen and when the annoucement came down that a new RE game would be coming out for the DC it solidified my choice to buy one. I remember the first pictures of the game, I could not believe how amazing the game looked.

As the game got closer to release a few more details came out and I learned that Wesker will be in it. This got me so excited, I didn't care how he was in it, just that he was in it. No villain in any of the previous 3 RE games made the same impact as Wesker did. He was the first, the betrayer, one of the key players in starting this entire mess and one game was not enough. Birkin was just a monster, Nicholai was trying to be Wesker but did not have that a-holeish charm. The decision to bring him back is the best thing to happen to the RE storyline. After RE3s ending Umbrella's time as the villain had to end, no way they would survive as a company. Plus a company does not make for a great villain, it needs a character, Wesker was the perfect answer to pull away from Umbrella and become a bigger threat as the main villain of the series. And he has bad blood with the main character, so now you have that added emotional value to the whole plot. CV is a huge turning point for the series, it took it away from being one isolated town to being a worldwide adventure. It added so much to the mythology of this series and for that I am very thankful.

Anyway, I will be playing the PS2 version of RECVX, I wish I could play my DC version (with awesome VMU health tracking) but my second disc broke. What an intro movie, I remember first watching it at an EB store, they had the video playing in their store before the game hit. Claire running from that helicopter, the awesome music playing, then she ends up surrounded and pulls off that bad ass drop and shoot move. The one thing that still stands out are her eyes, its still some of the best CG eyes I have ever seen.

The game starts you off in a cell, immediately the fact that the backgrounds are 3D stands out. Part of why I love this game is cause it has a different look to it. I like the 3D backgrounds, I like that it has a camera that actually moves around. I also enjoy the DC style graphics, there is something about them that look pleasing to the eye, sometimes more so than PS2 graphics. I love that they brought back the 3D items like the original had. Its still a good looking game oozing with atmosphere. Like in the second screen you can see roaches scurring about. Or when you climb the stairs and the load screen is slowed down with the heartbeat. The character movement is still as fluid as it was in RE2/3, it feels right.

From the moment you step out into that graveyard and beyond the game already has this new fresh feel to it. This location is not like any that came before it. The way the beginning starts off, the game just throws you in, right away you are solving the medallion replica puzzle and you see all sorts of different doors you cant access yet. For me it brought back that feeling of wow this place is big, how should I proceed, which is something RE3 kind of lacked. But because the place is so big there is plenty of backtracking and more so than any game in my playthrough so far I keep finding myself running back to an item box cause I forgot something or I ran out of room. Its also got a few annoying aspects like I did not care for the metal detector, they there should have been a grab all option or something, also the submarine just takes time to get to and from.

I have noticed that its cutscene heavy, there is something constantly going on. There is Steve who is still annoying, what a horrible voice actor, well maybe its not his fault but damn he is annoying "I'm sourry", just shut up. Amazing that they made him into a good character later on, the voice is still bad though. I love the way they introduced the dogs, its right at the start, so immediately its like what is that. Plus they play with you cause they dont come out right away. Alfred is delightfully insane, the first time I saw him in a cutscene, or that creepy as hell child video, I started to wonder about the sanity of Umbrella employees, thats when you start to realize this whole company is run by lunatics. I think he is a cool character, mainly cause he is actually insane, not in the stupid badguy way but in the holy crap he is two people type of way. I stopped at the part where he sets up the trap for you, another very well done segement, again going with the constant cutscene theme, it works for this game.

As I play this game it feels like a mix of RE1 and RE2. Rockfort Island sort of has this RE1 vibe to it. Its dark, its really atmospheric, its puzzle heavy. But the action is still there, lots of cutscenes, action moments, and plenty of different guns right away to get you going. Well time to continue.

Finished Umbrella Chronicles...well, almost.

The game is awsome, just awsome.
Zero, 1 and 3 are nicely remade into first person view, but the new part at the Russian Umbrella-headquarter is where the fun starts. Best scenes are, of course, those where you play as Weskter, haha.

Now on to getting some S-Ranks, so i can unlock the final chapter with Weskter.

Hearing all these impressions make me want to play through the whole series again.

Must... resist... urge to procrastinate. 0_0

Man a Resident Evil 2 remake would be aweomse...

I would hope thought that they would incoporate some Outbreak elements in it too. I always thought the police building was way too baren...no life anywhere at least throw some people in there for the zombies to maul with a personality.

Also a more fleshed out Irons would be aweomse too...bad cop tsc tsc I'm not down with that.

Continuing with RECVX, so much fun, I forget how huge this game is, finally got off the island and starting part 2. Halfway through and it feels like a almost went through a full RE game already, besides RE4 I feel this is the largest RE. I have gotten lost a few times, forgot a certain item or missed something so had to make many trips around the island.

Where I last left off it was the trap of Alfred where he unleashes the bandersnatches, annoying but cool enemies. They are so hard to avoid, best just to kill them as fast as possible. Steve's father part, would be a good scene if Steve's voice actor didn't suck.

One of my favorite parts of the game is going to the mansion on top of the hill, the entrace to that is almost like a Castlevania game. You got the lighting, thunder, eerie silhoutte of a house, awesome scene. I love the music in there, really creepy, its a shame its such a small area. Forgot to mention the bats that don't attack you if you have a lighter out, nice touch. In fact the lighter being a light source is a nice touch, again it can only be done with this 3D background. How come you can't run up or down stairs on your own in this game when in RE3 you can, and strangely zombies can use the stairs (and you can kill them on them which causes them to slowly tumble down the stairs, lol).

Another of my favorite areas is the torture room, oh and the whole setup before going in. The body bag that shakes as you enter that room, and when you come out its one of those heart beat load screens, freaked me out back in the day. I love the super fast doctor zombie. Then you go down into that hidden room which is one of my favorite looking rooms in the game, I dont know it has a nice color to it or something.

Oh there was the new Wesker scene with Claire, what an entrance. Should have been in the original game, I love to see Wesker beat the crap out of Claire for no good reason. "I despise Chris!" Awesome.

Toward the end of the island segment of course a self destruct sequence starts up, pretty epic setup for just the mid point. The tyrant is released, you got to fight him in that outdoor area. Get to the plane in time and then have the awesome plane fight. Very interesting battle cause its not a shoot till he dies type of thing. I had a ton of ammo so it was pretty easy, still that guy can hit, he takes a nice chunk of life.

So I am at Antartica. I just saw the cutscene leading up to it, what cheesy love music they had when Claire was sleeping next to Steve, lol. Game has been great already, the crazy thing is that it really begins to pick up now.

I've played through the GC version of RE4 about a dozen times, but in anticipation of 5 I picked up the Wii version yesterday. Controls feel great so far, but man, were the graphics always this grainy? I don't know if it'll make a difference, but maybe I'll finally invest in some component cables.

Okie, got my nunchuck now so I can try RE4 Wii. This is the first time I've played the GC or Wii version of the game (I do actually own RE4 on GC, but I never bothered to play it. I've got no easy way to setup my gamecube anyway since it doesn't support 480p).

I borrowed the game and Wii from my friend and yikes, I think I'm starting to understand why I personally end up having so many supplies in RE games, it's obviously designed in a way to still be playable for players who are bad and don't find a lot of supplies.

My friend has a savegame in 1-2 where he has only one weapon (the starting pistol), no health items, one grenade and 10 handgun bullets. That's not very good!

And having played the RE5 demo a ton I have to get used to RE4 again, I've got 2 very very bad habits. Whenever I see an enemy lying on the ground I'm compelled to run to him and stomp him. And I have a tendency to ignore all gold.

And one question. Has anyone had a problem with weird green pixels being displayed randomly in a pattern on the screen? It's barely visible in the main Wii menu, very visible ingame in RE4 (not visible in any menus in RE4). It does actually remind a little bit of some artifacts I had on my 360 before it rrod, so it doesn't seem very promising. My friend insists he's never seen any artifacts (then again he also thought composite gave him perfect image quality so he might have missed them completely).

Edit: Also, people lied! I've heard so much talk about the GC/Wii version being vastly superior to the PS2/PC version and well... the difference is honestly not that big. I think I'd personally settle for a highres PC version instead of 480p with some slightly better textures/models and occasional visual effects. It is a shame the PC version wasn't based on GC assets though since that would have definitely made it much much superior.

Edit edit: Okie, people may not have lied completely. Chapter 3-1 does look really good with the lighting effects, rain and other stuff. And the Red9 is awesome. And escorting Ashley around was more fun than I remember, I like it when she does it that small cheer sometimes I kill enemies.

Haha, yeah I did the same thing. I ran into position to stomp there heads and the prompt never came. :( :lol

Finished RE2 on the weekend and RE3 yesterday. Can't believe I still remember exactly what to do in both. RE3 has always been my favorite because of Jill, Nemesis, action moments, and the ammo maker.

Started RE4 today and I also kept trying to stomp enemies. ha

I began playing RE4 PS2's first two chapters today. Boy, what a downgrade compared to RE4 Wii on the visuals and audio, and ESPECIALLY the controls. RE5's controls are pretty tolerable because of the Faster aiming option, but RE4 PS2 really feels so clunky in comparison. This isn't a dig at RE4 in general, because the GC version's analog stick doesn't give me problems either, nor does the Wii Classic Controller's.

Leon's kicks don't seem to do much damage now that we've seen Chris punch the living daylights out of the Majini. :lol

Not much to say about RE4 that hasn't been said. It's pacing is great. The visuals are still pretty darn good on the Wii/GC. I'm taking the game slowly and just exploring around for a bit. Haven't done that with RE4 in quite awhile.

Resident Evil 2 On Gamecube The Wii Wouldn't Run it ='(
Play Time: Approx 6 Hours as ClaireA/LeonB

Once again, along with RE Zero, I never played Resident Evil 2 excessively. Some hailed it as the best in the series but I really didn't understand. Having played the game again, I have to say that although I really enjoyed it for the story and the gameplay, it was really easy. In fact, out of all the playthroughs so far (REmake, REZero and some Outbreak scenarios) I found this one to be the easiest and shortest.

The dual storyline is really this games high point. It's really nice to realise WHY Claire fights Birkin's second mutation in her storyline, as Leon injured him when you played through his B storyline. In that regard though, there were some really big continuity errors in terms of locked doors and such, but I understand for gameplay reasons that they probably had to do that. Regardless though, the system really does make you play through as both characters and experience the storyline as a whole. It's also nice how the scenarios are pretty much the same, except supporting characters are shuffled around. The "B" scenarios really bring the characters all together though.

Enemy wise, we're introduced to the Lickers for the first time, as well as the crocodile and G creatures. I must say that the Lickers have and always will be my favourite creatures from the series, and I am interested to see how
they translate to RE5's gameplay
but we'll leave that blunder until March =P.

Puzzle wise the game doesn't really deliver. There's hardly any puzzles and what is there are immensely weak compared to Resident Evil and Resident Evil Zero. Still, the game had a nice amount of fetch quests (something I do like in my RE games) such as the Plugs and the Animal Plates.

Resident Evil 2 isn't my least favourite Resident Evil game, but playing through it again made me realise just how easy and approachable it was, moving it up in my own personal ranking for the series. In this regard, I feel like revisiting the other scenarios (LeonA/ClaireB) when I get the time as well. I mean, I did pass LeonB in about 2 hours.

As someone else here said, it's amazing that even though I've played RE2 only twice (the latest being approximately 1998) that I still remember exactly what to do. The game is brilliantly designed, in that regard.

High Points:
  • Lickers
  • Ada's introduction and story
  • Short and sweet
  • Dual storyline and the consequences of one characters actions impacting another
  • Being "chased" by Mr. X (Some may say this is precedent as to what's to come!)
Low Points:
  • No puzzles worth writing home about.
  • Sherry having to be constantly babysat (Why stop moving if Claire moves ahead? Wouldn't you rather catch up with her than stay by yourself?)
  • Yet another floatable crate + water level puzzle =P
  • The oil bridge area really tested my memory (I kept forgetting to raise/lower it!)

(My) Unanswered Questions / Discussion Starters: Is ClaireA/LeonB truly the "official" storyline for RE2? Just how did Ada remove her shoes and pants in exchange for some high heels and a haircut in UC? :lol And finally, how did Annette Birking sustain so many injuries YET STILL keep popping up?

Next Game: With my copy of Resident Evil 3 still in transit, I will turn to the Outbreak games while I wait. Both the original and File#2 are in my possession now, so I will enjoy playing through them!

Remaining Games:
  • Resdent Evil 3: Nemesis (GCN)
  • Resident Evil CODE: Veronica (GCN)
  • Resident Evil 4 (Wii)
  • Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles (Wii)
  • Resident Evil Dead Aim (PS2)
  • Resident Evil Survivor (PSX) tentative
  • Resident Evil Survivor 2 (PS2) tentative
  • Resident Evil Outbreak (PS2)
  • Outbreak
    [*]Below Freezing Point
    [*]The Hive
    [*]Hellfire
    [*]Decisions, Decisions

  • Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2 (PS2)
  • Training Ground
    [*]Wild Things
    [*]Underbelly

    [*]Desperate Times
    [*]End Of The Road

I think I'm going to play through 2 and 3 some time this week. Reading these great impressions (you all know who you are) makes me nostalgic as hell.

RE2 and 3 will basically be new to me, as I haven't played them since 03, and while I can remember the basic layouts, reading these impressions make me realise I've forgotten a lot. I'll probably start RE2 some time later tonight.

Your RE2 impressions tipped me over the edge. :lol

This thread has been great. Props to CVXFreak.

Playing through RE4...

I pull out the shotgun and let the villager get up close and I blow his head off. I then turn my aim to other enemies coming and a second later he is choking me with no head and the 'move the stick icon' appears on screen to shake loose. I must have played through RE4 a bunch of times on GC and PS2 and I don't remember that happening before. I looked at my brother and he looked at me and we just started laughing.

Okay, after beating RE4 and in the middle of my RE1 playthrough, I'm trying to acquire the rest of the series. After looking through a bunch of sites, in terms of price, I've come to the conclusion that the original playstation versions are the way to go because they're more readily available. But I'm not sure what features the ports add, like better graphics, new modes and stuff. Seems worth looking into. I'd preferably get 2, 3, and CV all on the Dreamcast though...

Let's see how expensive and rare this stuff is. Sigh.

Resident Evil: Directors Cut dual shock edition psx

Resident Evil 2 psx dual shock edition

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis psx

Resident Evil: Code Veronica X ps2

Resident Evil: Zero GC

Whew. I wonder why RE: DC, RE2, RE3, and RE0 cost so much while Code Veronica is so cheap....

Is the RE: Outbreak series is worth investigating....?

Be wary of the RE1 dual shock edition. It has one very major difference from the regular director's cut - the music has been entirely redone with a full orchestra. That may sound awesome, but it really isn't. They really went for the kitchy B-movie vibe and instead of haunting melodies you get shrill piano smashing and strings with little semblance of melody or composition. And the catchy ending theme "Still Dawn" was replaced by some abomination that is just painful for me to listen to (of course, I'm also bitter that Still Dawn replaced the original "Yume de Owarasenai" in the american version).

Well, it's not quite that bad, and after playing through the DS version once some of it has sort of grown on me, but it can't touch the original music. I would recommend this version unless you absolutely cannot live without dual shock controls.

I'll mention this to one of my friends, he's been meaning to get in to the series (having only played 4 and REmake, and loving both).

Cheers, it sold today for ~$200, a little less than what he paid for them so he is content.

So, I played through Outbreak and I'm up to Hellfire. Definitely the hardest scenario so far - where are all the guns! I'm absolutely stuck (It doesn't help I'm playing on Lone Wold mode for a challenge either >_>)

That being said, is there any point to keeping Len and Charlie's ID tags? I suspected that they are used on that statue bust in the room near the Security Room but I am not 100% sure, and couldn't confirm before dying. Poor Alyssa.

Perhaps I should use Yoko for this one. =/ That Knapsack would definitely come in handy.

Absolutely loving the Outbreaks so far though. I wish they'd make a new one, our online climate is much better suited for it right now than before. =(

I just finished REmake with Jill, and CVX is next. Forest didn't give any trouble today, and he was gone from the manison after i returned from the guardhouse. I did trigger a trap i've never seen before though. I used the red jewel on the tiger statue, and about 10 snakes hit me in the head. I really hope Barry makes some kind of return in RE5, either in the main game or in some kind of mercenaries mode. A playable Barry is on my most wanted list. Capcom better add him as DLC if he isn't already on the disc.

I played up until the V-Jolt on the DS version of the original in about 35 min last night. God, the DS version is ugly...the compression is nuts. WTF is with the first zombie video. It's like youtube quality if youtube came out in 1954.

I finished my replay of RE4 today (completed the PAL GC version back in 2005, now it's the NTSC PS2 version) and started a New Game+. Why the hell I didn't do that back in 2005 I'll never know. Great new costumes (Ashley's white outfit = :o) plus with my maxed out Blacktail, Striker, and TMP I'm generally a One Man Death Squad. Seeing the chainsaw guy drop dead from 4-5 handgun shots was funny.

The hype got to me. Playing RE4 on Pro mode. Never have anyway (well, I've never gotten as far as I have), so it's best to do it while I'm still in the mood I guess.

That happened to me once or twice. Was total bullcrap because I got hurt and had to heal from it too. :lol

I just did a play though of REmake as Chris and I didn't get to play as Rebecca...I'm assuming you have to be bitten by the snake/unlock the vines room of Plant 42 in order to do so?

Gonna start my first run of RE4 ever tonight! Then I'll be all caught up and ready for 5! How long do you guys estimate it'll take me to complete 4? I've heard it's almost as long as a short RPG. I know I have plenty of time till 5 but SF4 coming out this week..

My second run through was 17-18 hours. I think my first playthrough was 24 hours or something.

Just man up and get it done over the course of 2-4 days. Have fun. :)

The entire mansion. The spiders, the hunters...

Not to mention that the music is brilliantly subverted - it adds a lot of tension. That and the basement music is awesome.

RE4 took me along the lines of 26 hours to beat. One of my friends blasted through it in about 14 on his playthrough.

I really savored every moment of RE4. I also put in a lot of effort looking over every nook and cranny of the environment in order to find as much money and ammo as possible.

Christopher said:
how on earth did that take you 22 hours himumumu??

It took me 26. I savored every moment, only running when I had to, playing inventory-Tetris, gawking at everything and freezing in place often. That's what I always do in these games...

...which is why I had so much trouble with Outbreak 1 and 2... you're on the clock and always have to hurry. I couldn't beat either of them, but I still liked the experience. I played the first game online and it was pretty interesting, but offline both are decent traditional RE fare with a good amount of memorable set pieces and moody environments. And some of the best music in the series. Definitely worth playing.

There really isn't a time limit. I REALLY take my time with this playthrough and, well, Alyssa doesn't get infected at all.

It's definitely harder than the other REs though. Inventory space + the whole concept of surviving is really enforced here.
