Retro box art that still looks awesome today

Can't find a hi-res scan of the box art, but here's a photo.

I saw this in a discount bin at a Book-Off last summer and almost bought it besides a complete inability to play it, just based on the cover.
Hah. I bought gaia gensouki a few years ago for the exact same reason. It really is eye catching.

Always loved the pseudo-realism of these:

Though the JPN version of it is brilliant as well as listed previously

Probably the best cover for the good ol' Prince.

As a general note, any Super Famicom game cover is leagues better than its SNES equivalent.

Old Genesis/Mega Drive box art > all

The Japanese ones are even better when they have the full art. Take Altered beast:

I've resized it and JPEGd it quite badly, sorry...(source ~768kb)

Makes me wonder why we see less reversible covers or inner covers in case of transparent releases. Wii Sin and Punishment 2 is the only one I own (and even then that was Europe-only).

JPN Perfect Dark is B E A utiful!!!

Also, I'm surprised anybody else in the world knows the Master System game Teddy Boy! This is my Mum's favourite game ever, she was completely addicted to it back in the day. Whilst clearing out her attic, we found the old Master System (2!) and a few games including Teddy Boy. Fired it up about a week ago. Ahhhhhhh. It's crazy how much I remember exactly from almost 20 years ago.

Normally when it comes to Final Fantasy covers, I'm a purist- I only want the white background and logo ones. But the Super Famicom FFVI... holy shit.

Psygnosis are the clear winners. Here are some more that may have been missed

After seeing these, I just realized and confirmed that these covers were done by the same artist who did the Yes album covers, Roger Dean. I never knew that before, I think I still have my Yes Close to the Edge tout T-shirt laying around somewhere too :)

I think Psygnosis also used other sci-fi artists like Peter Jones, who was also excellent.

Actually, most of the EA stuff from that era still stir my imagination. They definitely give me serious nostalgia when I look back on these...

Ok, the Shadow of the Beast one must have been done by Roger Dean though as it reminded my instantly of the Tales from a Topigraphical Ocean album

No, you're right, most of them were Roger Dean, and definitely Shadow of the Beast.I was just saying that a few were done by others as well.

Even their logo was done by Roger Dean:

I personally like this one

Outside of the bad logo, it shows off great artwork of something that actually happens in the game. More modern day box art should be like this. I'm tired of ones with the main character just standing there with their weapon in hand, or an extreme close up on their face.

You beat me to the logo damnit!

For the longest time I had the owlball as my desktop background.

Psygnosis was so, so awesome. Incredible art design, amazing soundtracks, superb covers, and great games as well - although they had some blunders here and there.

Truth is, as far as covers goes, nothing, nothing comes remotely close to old school pc/amiga boxart.

I truly miss the art style Psygnosis fully embraced as their signature.

And that sound.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VX2_G2RwRy8
