Damn, I'd forgotten about the Double Dragon II boxart. You are right; it still looks awesome even to this day. =)

Iron Sword? Any relation to Demon Sword? I remember that cover looking similar.

But would you really say that looks awesome?

EDIT - nvm, confirmed in the pic's name. ;)

I always thought the classic line of NES games that had low quality pixel art on the cover seemed like a bad idea. It's not like many people were going to buy a Master System, but why make it very clear on your boxes that the graphics aren't very good?

Gran Turismo 1 and 2 PAL boxart still looks modern, GT1 had a tire with the GT logo imprinted to the grip, GT2 has the GT logo on an open V8 engine.

GT3 then fudged it up with that rear tail light crap.

Well, it sort of has a charm to it.

I expect people to put up these Lucasfilm/Arts covers eventually, but I'm too lazy:

Zack McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders
The Secret of Monkey Island
Monkey Island 2
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
The Dig
Grim Fandango

But they were? Nowadays they have that distinct retro charm, but even back then games like SMB or Metroid looked fine.

Back then those graphics were ace though. They were practically bragging with their uber machine.

Old PC boxart is fucking amazing for the most part. I've been trying to get my hands on some original Lucasarts stuff forever (though I did happily get a commissioned LeChuck done by Purcell which is nice). So I will post these just because they're great games with amazing boxart. Really evocative for me.

I'm sorry, but I don't think that Chrono Trigger boxart is very good, with Chrono blocking part of the title and everything. It all lack balance, and, for how colourful and vibrant the game is, using a snowy landscape just seems like an duff choice to me.

^ Now that Wasteland cover, THAT is something awesome.

My timeline may be a bit off since when I was looking at that first series of NES games they were already a few years old and better boxes (and better looking games) existed. Still, I like the other regions art better.

The best part about Fabio, in all his fleshy glory, being on the cover of the box is that Kuros, the hero of the actual game, is in full armor 100% of the time...

Also, I always enjoyed the King Arthur's World box art, with its nods to M.C. Escher:

I don't get it why would they stop looking awesome?

Because if your game doesn't have a snarling, macho dudebro smoldering with generic rage as he charges toward you with his gun at an angle then it is pure filth and isn't even worth renting.
