Retro Studios 'Too Busy' to Work on Zelda - IGN

Of course this is good news.

I love Retro, I don't want them to touch Zelda though, and I don't see what is the appeal of that idea, do people really want a westernized Zelda? I personally don't.
I'd love for them to do a 2.5D top-down Zelda that isn't like the DS games. DKCR-like visuals/Retro polish with ALttP influence? Who *wouldn't* want that?

The Starfox that rare made was awful. I just just couldn't get into it at all.
I know it was dinosaur planet or whatever, but Star fox really needs an awesome reboot.

It was an acceptable Zelda clone I'd say, but it really just wasn't a Star Fox game at all. It was a separate game that got Star Fox slapped on and it showed.

The Namco game on GCN, Assault, was alright for its time, and though I couldn't stand the controls in Command it had pretty good critical response. But everyone agrees those aren't anywhere near 64. It's sad that the best and most current Star Fox game is a remake of 64, which itself was a remake of the original.

Star Fox is one of the most well known franchises Nintendo has outside of Mario, Pokemon and Zelda, but it also has the fewest really classic games. Retro would do wonders for making the series a blockbuster again.

If they're "too busy" my gut feeling is that they're working on multiple projects, not just on. Hoping for a Wii U game and 3DS game to be announced soon.

Retro should make something that would conceivably appeal to the core market. Star Fox would be a waste of its talent, frankly. It should be a new IP.

Ok westernized wasn't the right word, what I meant was more in the line that even though Retro is an excellent studio, it doesn't immediately make it the ideal developer for any franchise. Personally I liked DKR but wasn't blown away by it, actually I never even finish the game.

And cute, quirky Zelda is the best, that's something I don't want to lose :P

Honestly I think Retro are a bit overrated. Not that they're not good, but sometimes people seem to think that nintendo should just hand over all development to them, and lately everyone seem to care about nothing more than finding out whatever they're developing, when in reality a lof of nintendos studios are equally great.

Prime 1 was fantastic, but the sequels didn't really live up to it in my opinion, I know some people prefer them, but I'm also not alone in thinking Prime 2 was dreadfully slow and Prime 3 too linear. Either way they didn't really add a whole lot to the formula. DKCR was pretty great as well, but not nearly as fun as NSMBW or really as good as the original DKC.

Good. Any western studio would probably take that medieval theme way too seriously. Zelda needs to be quirky and weird, otherwise it can not be Zelda. I hope that lessens the amount of people suggesting this for a while.

The reason why we want retro to do a Zelda is so Miyamoto and co don't get involved!!

What's with the Miyamoto hate in this thread? Isn't Aonuma the official scapegoat for all things Zelda related?

Miyamoto getting more involved with a Zelda game again could only be a good thing with his recent talk about Link to the Past sequel and his general hate for cutscenes

Traditionally I think that the Zelda team has always had a close contact with anyone who's working on a Zelda game. If you were going to have that happen in the US at Retro, that would be kind of difficult for them to be able to coordinate. Certainly they're too busy for that sort of thing right now. It would probably require me to be involved to a great extent as well, so I would have to get over quite a bit too. I'd probably have to live in Texas... [laughs]"

People, read the quote and not the title.
Miyamoto is talking about the Zelda team, not Retro. He's saying that the Zelda team is too busy to make that sort of collaboration happen.

And on that note -

I'd hazard a guess that there are ridiculous office politics when it comes to the teams who get to work on particular projects. Wouldn't surprise me if Aonuma guards Zelda jealously. Furthermore, IIRC, Retro got Metroid in the first place because no one in Japan really wanted to work on it. Given the rumored difficulties with the development of DKCR, Aonuma's position within the NCL hierarchy, and Miyamoto possibly preferring to step into development on his own timetable, Retro Zelda was always wishful thinking, IMO. This seems like an indirect and polite way of saying "never going to happen."

Miyamoto living in Texas, on the other hand, would be phenomenal. He'd be the de facto ruler of Austin, beloved by all.

Raven Blade resurrection?
Eternal Darkness sequel?
Something completely new?

Something tells me we are gonna know later this year.

I have come to the realization that the thing i want the most from them is Metroid Prime 4.
Yeah, original i know. Even i'm surprised with myself.

It's going to be an attempt at an Uncharted quality adventure game or an attempt at a Halo / CoD calibre online FPS imo.

They have traditionally worked on existing franchises, but I have a feeling this time is different. It'll be totally new.

If it were new Metroid, I'd be very happy but I'm excited thinking about what they could do with finance and a looser leash!

I'd say Star Fox.

Nintendo's been using them to reinvigorate franchises that haven't been seen in a while, and no series needs it more than Star Fox.

I'm just wondering how long it will be before Team Ninja makes the next DKC game where they finally give us some deep insight into Dixie Kong's character.

That's not how I read that. He says Retro is busy (in general), but that the Zelda team is too busy to coordinate a Zelda game with Retro. Not that Retro is too busy for Zelda.

This. The quote says the Zelda team is too busy.

Retro isn't busy. They made those Nintendo Land games in a weekend and have been collecting checks from Kyoto while sipping mimosas in the Bahamas.

I'd say this narrows it down to:

1- Metroid Prime 4 or new 3D Metroid concept

2- Star Fox Reboot

3- Original IP to make up for the foolish decision to let Rare keep Perfect Dark when sold to Microsoft
Platinum's totally doing Starfox U. Believe.

I'm guessing Retro's main team is doing a traditional Wii U fps, maybe loosely based on the Prime franchise/setting but it won't be a "Metroid" game. Their new team is probably doing DKCR2.

Agreed with pretty much all of this.

Good old Miyamoto, almost always willing to provide us a little extra info and clarification when the other reps won't. Bummer that it's not Zelda but good news that they're hard at work. Whatever it is I just want it to be an epically big and cool game.

retro is nintendos second best team after ead(or whatever the ones who made galaxy games are called)

That would be EAD Tokyo and I agree. MP1&Echoes and SMG1&2 are still my favorite properties from both current and last gen.

This is good news right?

No.

This means (1) the Zelda team is AGAIN developing another Zelda and (2) that Retro is working on "something everybody wants us to do", but that is NOT Zelda. Not a new IP of course, so it could be either Starfox or Metroid.

Let's keep finger crossed it is Metroid and not Starfox.

I asked the writer for clarification [on "who" is too busy] and he replied to me '"Retro is too busy" so...uh...yeah..

Whatever the case, Retro's not working on a Zelda game.

Of course this is good news.

So many people said the same thing with Metroid Prime.

Seems like good news to me.

Also i'm pretty sure that the "doing something everyone wants" quote was false.

Yeah.....if Retro Studios is given the opportunity to do Zelda, Miyamoto needs to stay the fuck in Japan and leave them alone.

.

I wonder more and more if the fact that Miyamoto want to supervise every game at Nintendo isn't the real reason why the output of the company is still so damned low.

Whatever it is, I want it to be an epic, western oriented title. Not DK or stupid furry Starfox (as much as I enjoyed SF Adventures)
