Retronauts 52: Sonic & 20 Years of Genesis

There's a diference between liking to talk about old games and actually liking old games.

Kinda shitty show. I don't get the feeling these people do much retro gaming at all.

While some may not agree with the opinions that were expressed, it doesn't mean that it was a bad show. And how can anyone say there's Sega hate after that awesome Dreamcast retrospective?!

I had no idea Virtual Bart was worth so much money.
I love that game.

What a terrible podcast. Why bother putting one out when one person in the line-up is a casual Sonic fan and everyone else practically couldn't care less? toastyfrog and kobunheat: you fail.

Because they didn't want to spend two years searching for someone who loved Sonic passionately who a.) wasn't a furry or b.) had a legitimate reason to aside from misplaced nostalgia.

For the record, I lived in a Genesis household. Sonic 1 - Knuckles were amazing. I didn't get the Dreamcast, so I lost touch. This summer, I decided to play through the main series, including the Advance and DS games. I managed to finish Sonic Heroes before I realized that I would never get that week back again, ever. Then I cried.

It's not an issue of them liking the games or not. The games aren't all that good. The problem is that they just didn't sound very qualified to be doing a show about sonic.

Oh you like to pick it up and run thru the first level once in awhile and you usually give up on the third? Oh all of you? Really?

Most gamers don't like old games.... but boy do they love to talk about liking them.

Sonic CD and 1 - Knuckles are brilliant. They're slightly better than SMB 1 -3 and World, and on the same level as Yoshi's Island (See how easy that was?)

I'm a huge fan of Retronauts, and was disappointed with this podcast. They're entitled to their opinion/don't mind them bitching about Sonic, but it would have been interesting if there was one Sonic fan among them.

For some reason, a lot of the games publications I've read don't offer Sonic 3 and Knuckles much praise. Could be a coincidence.

The reason I'm into gaming now (As well as a lot of people here in the UK) is because of the Mega Drive and Sega's franchises, and they could have done the system a bit more justice by bringing in someone that grew up on the Sega side.

what i couldn't deal with was the group affirming mind link thing they had going. throw almost any bunch of long time gamers together and opinions regarding sonic will range from 'the greatest 2d platformer of all time' to 'overrated, flashy, sub mario trash', but within this podcast even the sonic 'fan' was dragged into the same apathetic, dreary, baseless group-think of the crowd.

i'm not nearly as big a fan of retronauts as i was prior to this episode.

Sonic 2 was better received at launch and sold far better as well. Ergo, it is more commonly fondly remembered. Fans of the series may generally regard S3&K as the pinnacle, but Gamer Joe and Game Reviewer Jim think of Sonic 2 first.

The only time I've ever enjoyed Retronauts was when Tycho guest-starred on the show for the Dreamcast episode and spoke passionately about his experiences with the system, which was then followed up by the Player One guys. The rest of the time, the show just seems to be this bitter snark-fest where Parish and Kobun can masturbate over the Virtual Consoles releases that week before begrudgingly approaching any other topic with complete dis-interest accompanied by equal "I hate everything" comments from Sharkey.

It appears no such positive or genuinely interesting other voices with information and personal stories on this era were invited to sit in and contribute to this episode, so I have to ask why bother? If its something you don't want to talk about, don't. Just because its some arbitrary anniversary, don't feel the need to go through the motions if you'd much rather be talking about something else.

If there's one thing I've learned from observation and first-hand experience, it's that picking fights with Sonic fanboys is a very very bad idea.

But isn't it worth discussing even if it harps on the bad as well as the good? It's a discussion, not a celebration.

Oh by all means, yes. The Dreamcast episode therefore was well balanced because you had the enthusiasts and the usual snark-set. Take away the enthusiasts (such as Shane, god love him for some of the bullshit he speaks but 1up is pretty thin on the ground these days of people with actual retro gaming experience and dude is like a Sega fanatic) and as I said, all we're left with is "lol bankrupt sega" "i never owned a genesis, whats out on Virtual Console this week again?" "how about that sonic ehhhh" and absolutely no noteworthy conversation of any kind.

I'm not much of a nit-picker at all, but I was expecting a discussion on each major entry on the series, like they did with Dragon Quest (Heck, they only needed to talk about four games, really). And then after the brief Sonic 2 'discussion', they just veered onto the next segment. Pretty half-assed. As someone who likes games, I can easily separate myself from the whole 'Nu-Sonic' thing and appreciate the Mega Drive titles as great games in their own right. With the newer, lamer Sonic games, it's not a case of me having a deposit of venom towards them, it's just of a case of "it's a pity they're not as great as the old ones."

Where can I see the different design iterations of Sonic they mentioned in the podcast? I want to see Sonic the fat guy and Sonic the bunny :lol

That's a bit of an exaggeration isn't it?

Which is stupid. Sonic fanboys really need to ease off a bit and learn to take a joke. It doesn't surprise me that the majority of the Sonic talk on this episode amounted to "lol, Sonic" given the crazy and sad Sonic fans out there.

The conversation about the games was either "I don't like Sonic" or "I don't get Sonic from a gameplay perspective and I suck at it". Granted, I'm speaking from a bias perspective, but I thought Sonic 1 was bitch hard for the longest time and by Sonic 3 the game was almost too easy (and, even after Sonic 3 came out, going back to Sonic 1 would still kick my ass until I forced myself to beat the game).

The only person on this podcast who seemed to appreciate Sonic almost never said anything. She would only speak when spoken to and for the majority of it all kept quiet.

This episode personifies exactly why I dislike Retronaughts. I swear, for so called 'retro gamers' they hate every damn game except JRPGs and Nintendo. 1up need to find some staff that actually like old games.

I will be unsubscribing.
