Retrospectively, how was the Wii?

Wish they had more than 21 N64 games though. So many great games are missing from the VC.

I agree, N64 was my "first" console, and i was sad to see so little N64 games.

Many of the good games are from Rare, so not having them on the VC was disappointing. Then you have other games from dead developpers like Turok or Turok 2 that were missing ... :(

2009 had Wii Sports Resort and NSMB Wii, two of the best games on the entire system.

I know it's just two titles, but they're awesome ones nonetheless.

2011 was weak, definitely.

I'd still say 2009 was weak because those games didnt came out until the last few months of the year. NSMB Wii was definitely awesome though. Never tried Wii Sports Resort though, is it still worth getting?

Man, this reminds me that Excite Truck was so much fun. I'd take a full fledged sequel in HD over all the NST racers.
Excite Truck/Bots are quite good. People tend to dismiss them because of the presentation, but if you like arcade racers they're a lot of fun. Great visceral sense of speed and some innovative mechanics. I like them more than Mario Kart, at least for single player.

Of course 2008 is pretty infamous for having Mario Kart and Smash early on, then Reggie saying "just play Animal Crossing for the holidays!" You have to wonder what third-party support would have looked like the in the later years if first-party support hadn't dried up for awhile.

My favorite console this gen, no contest. I also own a PS3 which I bought after the price drop (and had always planned to get one). That's the console I'm most disappointed in. Xbox was never on my radar.

I was disappointed in the lack of a lot of the traditional game genres I really enjoy, like platformers and action adventure games (Nintendo remains the biggest mainstream supplier of these) but I really enjoyed a lot of the more experimental and nichier titles to hit the Wii. I'm honestly not looking forward to what the next generation of systems will do to the industry, with all three console makers having high powered HD systems on the market. The love affair with photorealism and grit-spit-and shit we so edgy games dominating, I feel like high end graphics have killed art style.

I also take issue with all of the "it's objective truth the Wii sucks" comments. Fine, express your tastes, but don't put your opinions out there as the one great truth.

Resort was in July. NSMB Wii was in November. So, only one of the games was in the last few months. Again, it's one summer release and one holiday release; still not that impressive.

And Wii Sports Resort is definitely worth it still, but mostly just if you have friends (and at least two motion+ devices). It's a fantastic multiplayer game with respectable motion controls.

Seeing as how SNES Mystical Ninja is one of the better selling VC games in its category, there should have at least been the N64 entries. Also, no Mischief Makers, Rayman 2, etc... :/

However, VC was really good for import games that I could obviously never get as a kid. First time I got my hands on Sin & Punishment, Chrono Trigger, etc.
So good.

I feel like they never really delivered on the "vastly new ways to play" that we thought we'd get when the system was announced. I'll grant that Wii Sports was something that couldn't be done before, but I feel like not many developers actually ended up implementing good uses of motion control.

I really wish they would of kept rareware. Nintendo fans generally really liked there games.

As for the wii itself, I really think both the best zelda (twilight Princess) and best mario game(Super Mario Galaxy 1) came out on the system.

I also think SMB wii is the best 2d mario game. Shame that Metroid Other M was horrible.

As for Donkey Kong Returns, I really can't say if it's the best Donkey Kong or not. Definitely would be between Returns and DKC2 though.

overall i was expecting the system to lack 3rd party and it did. Still had a good time with the system though.

The fastest selling system of all time basically, killed by lack of developer/publisher support due to the graphical arms race causing resources to be spread thin.

You know, as long as this gen has been, I can't help but feel that it would have been better if we got a few more years out of the PS2/Xbox/GC. I feel like late 2004ish/early 2005 was when devs really hit their stride with that generation of hardware, and there just hasn't been that level of polish this gen. And even when everyone is ready for a new generation of systems now, it just doesn't feel like 3rd parties have the resources to handle it anymore.

My opinion. It was a revolution. Not just because of the controller etc but because of Virtual Console, the best retro gaming downloadable service ever in the history of video gaming, by far.
I literary shed a tear of joy the day I plugged in an arcade stick and got to play the awesome C64 classic The Last Ninja to the end. Nintendo owned gaming that day. Just thinking about this makes me love the Wii like no other console. Virtual Console - the feature of the generation.

Did you forget to put a S in front of NES? :)

Oh, I personally loved the SNES as well. I'd have a hard (or impossible) time choosing which of the 2 consoles had my favorite games.

However, I was 11 years old when the Super came out, and most of the "old" people I knew continued to play the NES because the SNES library didn't have the same broad appeal of the NES.

So, even though the SNES was freaking awesome for me, from an objective standpoint I can also see why it never matched the sales numbers of NES.

Motion controls ruined several games.
Terrible graphics for most games.
Bad UI
Terrible internet features.

BUT:

That's nearly 50 games. You can't really knock that. Great little console, even with the major, major flaws. I still need to pick up a few I sold for various reasons early on in the console cycle, too.

Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are my favourite two games of all-time, I think.

The exclusives basically made the system... like every Nintendo console.

I feel about the Wii how I felt about the GC: A system that didn't have many games that interested me, but the ones that did REALLY did - and most were exclusive to it. It also has the best version of RE4; naysayers don't understand.

The Wii gave us...

  • Wii Sports
  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2
  • Zelda: Skyward Sword
  • Zelda: Twilight Princess (in 16:9)
  • Wii Sports Resort
  • New Super Mario Bros Mii
  • Super Smash Bros Brawl
  • Kirby's Epic Yarn
  • Metroid Prime 3
  • Mario Kart Wii
  • etc

I think it hasn't been as bad as people make out.

Compared to my Gamecube, I didn't get nearly the same abundance of good action games because their developers went to the HD twins. Platformers aznd Zelda were awesome, but I really want a Mario that challenges the scale of SM64, though.

It had decent Nintendo support but I have to echo the lack of Wave Race, Pilotwings, etc.

VC is really awesome, but not so much if you can't access Wifi.

I haven't made up my mind fully yet. I was so hyped for the new controller and was actually happy Nintendo dared to go with just a little update in horse power. first software announcements were really promising but third party support was such an incredible let down for the most part. At some point it felt there was literally zero effort put into the system despite it being the major success it was. I felt much more satisfied with my GC. Resi alone made that console worthwhile.

I wonder if we will ever learn what the hell third party was thinking. Overall I feel really burned out on video gamesafter Wii and will probably become a 3DS only gamer from here on.

I agree. The midrange budget games were effectively killed this generation or moved to handhelds.

They did however exist on Wii. Think of games like Klonoa, A Boy and his Blob, No More Heroes, Prince of Persia the Forgotten Sands, Boom Blox, Zack & Wiki etc.

I enjoyed the Wii a tremendous amount.

For myself and my friends, it was the console of choice (though now I game on the 360 more) simply because we all lived busy lives and it was the perfect pick-up and play system.

And it had a large catalog of games to download from the store that were classics and our favourites as kids. Who would have thought we'd be playing Mario Kart 64 on our Wii's to pass time? haha

Great system. Wii Fit and Wii Sports were revolutionary in terms of concept, design, and idea.

2011 was weak, definitely.
2009 also had Punch Out, Sin & Punishment, Excite Bots, Metroid Prime Trilogy.. for an entire year, that isn't GREAT for a system but those are all great games, half of them being five star amazing games.

Terrible console for me. Bought it for Super Smash Bros. Brawl and the online in that game killed the experience. Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess were cool, Madworld was mediocre, No More Heros was jank aside from bosses, and that's about it. Would love to play Super Mario Galaxy 2, DKCR, and Xenoblade one day, but that's up to how good the Wii U ends up. Sold the console and got a PS3 to compliment my 360 and have been much happier since.

If I only focus on the games and forget all the technical stuff (bad online, SD graphics), it was the best console this generation. (at least for my taste on games).

S&P was in 2010. However Madworld, Rune Factory, Dead Space Extraction and House of the Dead Overkill were 2009, I think.

fake edit: Plus Little Kings Story.

Wario Ware Smooth Moves is the only (fun) game that actually needed the Wii to exist, and was fantastic. The rest use the wiimote for gimicky non-functional bullshit. It had great games on it, even some good third party games, but every single one of them would have benefited more from better hardware even if it meant losing the motion controls.

Easily the worst system of the trio this generation for me.

I was really concerned with the Wii phenomenon back in 2006 simply because it seemed as if its motion control ways would send the industry off track with software I care about being limited by the hardware.

Fortunately, this did not come to pass.

Surprisingly, I've grown to really like the Wii. It has offered a large library of great platforming games alongside Nintendo's typical first party releases that has kept me playing. I really like the system!

Mixed feelings.

It started off very strong, with one of my favorite games ever (Twilight Princess) and kept the momentum going for a year or two. I have to say that the quality of their first-party output was quite strong. SMG was fantastic.

However, I think it had its strings of disappointments. Brawl and MKWii were both missteps for the series, eschewing depth for randomness. Brawl's completely broken online sealed its fate as well.

Then, around 2009, the momentum stopped. The games were still good (WSR and NSMBWii), but few and far between. The third parties did not fill the gaps. They never really did, but the first-party releases didn't give you much time to think about it.

Additionally, around this time, it became very apparent how limited the Wiimote was in its capabilities. WM+ rectified this, but few games took advantage of it.

The total collapse of third-party support, and Nintendo's own troubles at balancing a well-timed release schedule practically killed the system midway through its life.

The Nintendo offerings continue to be strong and were worth the price of admission, but it's hard to feel like there was a lingering sense of missed potential. A variety of factors contributed to it, but it doesn't change that fact.

Was pretty much useless. Only games I currently own are Zelda, Smash and Galaxy games, other than that (and the other few first party games) it was a waste of money (bought it at launch day)

Was it better than the Gamecube?
That it can play Gamecube games and use almost all pripherals, on top of VC and the Wii's library make it better.

Playing my GC action games on Wii made me wish that 3rd parties tried harder

For me, back-compatibility became a curse. =( :P

We're talking strictly software that was made for the console in question here, though.

Wont express just how disappointed I was with the Wii for fear of getting banned before E3. Let's just say that if I could go back in time I would not have bought one even though it means missing the galaxies.

My PS2 library extends onto the another shelf :P

Yeah, I have a lot of PS2 games as well, not so much this generation though (IMO).

No wayyy. There were like, 6 games I liked on GC. First and only bad Nintendo console in my eyes.

Agreed, the GCN was not a very good console IMO. I only own like 5 games for it. It's the console with the least games I've bought.

No More Heroes, Sin & Punishment: Star Successor, and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories would all probably fall into my top 10 favorite games of all time list, so that's good enough for me. Xenoblade and all the usual Nintendo games were pretty fun too. There's a number of games I want to play that I haven't gotten around to yet, like Metroid Prime 3, Little King's Story, Mario Galaxy 2 and Rhythm Heaven.

Honestly, I don't think there's been a console I've owned where I've had the time+money to get every game I've wanted for it, so the size of the overall library has never mattered. There's still PS2 and GameCube games I want to get, but my backlog is huge enough as it is.

Had some really good games but rarely lived up to its full potential. Even without Wiimote + the standard motion controls could do far more than most developers bothered to attempt, and graphically the hardware was maxed out maybe 5 times.

I certainly feel like I got my money's worth, though.

Between the Marios and Zeldas, Dead Space: Extraction, Trauma Center, Metroid, etc.

Still some games I have to get around to like A Boy And His Blob, Mad World, Red Steel 2, Sin And Punishment 2, and so on. Damn backlog (it's bad; I still haven't played through Uncharted 1 on PS3, or finished Arkham Asylum on PS3, or Halo ODST on 360).

one of the weaker systems nintendo has released.

SNES > NES > N64 > Gamecube > Wii

N64 and Gamecube could be argued, but I believe N64 had more revolutionary games that will be remembered.

Wii was better than GC for Nintendo games

GC was better otherwise, for me anyways. I play games like Soulcalibur II, PSO and WWE Day of Reckoning all the time on the Wii.
