Return to Castle Wolfenstein appreciation thread

For PC that is.

Sure it looks like shit today, but this was like 7 years ago. What I liked about RTCW was the enviroment. It really had some nice scenery, everything from snowy mountains to lush forests. It's definitely one of my favorite single player fps games ever. Raven did a really good job on this one as it ran on the quake3 engine. The last boss was also very epic. I remember being very impressed with the flamethrower as the fire looked awesome back in the day.

This game was also the best xbox live game for myself. I spent nearly over 1500 hours online on xbox with this game and clanned every single day. Miss the hell out of it and hopefully 2 is good (raven is about an hour from me, i should go put pressure on them lol)

I thought it was okay. I played it after playing enemy territory and getting into the clan/tourney/ladder scene. I much preferred the multiplayer aspect, but RTCW wasn't that bad. I still can't believe I scrimmed/pubbed for almost three years.

It doesn't look like shit today!

edit: ok on those pics it does.

The snow levels are amazing looking to this day, same with flame from flamethrower.

I really, really hated the later sci-fi nazi parts and the last boss was a complete joke.

my girlfriend's brother still plays mp today as much as he can... it helps that it's old enough to run properly on his PC

raven didn't have a thing to do with it though. gray matter (aka. xatrix, the doods that did redneck rampage and kingpin etc) made the singleplayer, while nerve (mainly guys from rogue, who did strife and alice etc) did the multiplayer.

but yeah. pretty awesome game. I played through the single player again some time last year. was a lot shorter than I remembered, but also a lot better. the multiplayer was something else entirely back when the game was releaed. holy shit

an awesome overall package

Didn't care much for the MP in this game but the MP in ET was pure bliss. Such a great fucking game and it was free! I might have to fire it up again now...

Yeah, I fire it up once in a while to pubstar as rambo medic. :lol

hm. I haven't been able to find joinable games of rtcw multi and et in years. sucks. heh disclaim this. it's not like I try every other month or even every year.. but I did for each of them last year. couldn't connect to anything

In the end it was kinda meh, but the online was good. It had some cool leveles and good action but soon as the zombies kicked in it started suck.

Decent FPS.

The PC version is one of the few FPS that I played all the way through; it was a blast to play, so darn fun. I tried out the Xbox version and almost threw the controller in frustration.

yes, it was that good"

It deserves a second thread. This is potentially my favorite shooter of all time.

i really loved this game. Would be great to get a PSN version of the game with better graphics and great MP matches.

I loved the Clan play in this game. One of the best experiences in gaming I have ever had. I miss those days so much : (

The single-player campaign is 'blah', but the multiplayer is GODLY!

Even in the wake of Enemy Territory, RtCW still has more high quality maps, and a lot of people prefer the streamlined objectives compared to ET.

RtCW was the ultimate lan party game. We spent countless hours storming the beach, stealing the documents, getting killed at the last second, over and over again.

Brilliant.

where does it say that? I played some multi also, good fun but the single was my favorite.

RTCW is and will forever be all about multiplayer. Still one of the best games of its type around.

Beach <3

QFT

The multiplayer was on par with Team Fortress 2. It was perfectly balanced and interesting. IF you ever played the game online with OTHER hardcore RTCW players, the gaming was beyond amazing.

It was scrumtralecent.

It was the game that made me subscribe to XBL. I was more a fan of Destruction, but there were a few good maps. I think it may have been the first game to offer a map for a price (Barn I think it was).

Superb game. ET was multiplayer at it's best. And by no means does it look like sh*t today, it holds up quite well! Hopefully we get some news on the upcoming installment soon :D

This was the first PC game I bought and played. Well, I bought Quake 3 first but I sucked so much I didn't play it longer than 2 hours.

This game really got me into PC gaming, especially multiplayer FPS games.

didn't really like the multiplayer, still playing UT GOTY, but loved the ET add on

LOVED the singleplayer

just played through it recently on Steam.

Pouring out love for this is well justified. This and, to an even greater extent, Enemy Territory, are my favorite MP shooters of all time.

Always something to do, and all skill levels have the ability to be somewhat useful. +1

RTCW multiplayer and ET ate up countless hours of my life...and I'm totally cool with that. As already noted, well-matched teams made the online games truly epic because the default maps were constructed with an eye towards balance. (Well, except for that shitty submarine level, where the goal was to not lose the quickest. Defense had no chance on that map.)

The class specialties added a lot of depth to the game. I would dabble in all of the different classes, but I was only really good as a medic. It was thrilling to go running in with a needle out and try to revive 2-3 people before getting taken out myself -- if I got the right ones, it could turn the match.

I also miss the cheesy canned voice tracks, since they led to a lot of situational humor. One time, I was lying on the ground, waiting to see if a medic would revive me before I tapped out, and a guy from the other team came over. I piped up with a cheery "Hello!" figuring that he'd gib me instantly. Instead, he nodded up and down...then started jumping up and down on my corpse saying over and over again, "Hello!" So, I started spamming "Thank you!" and he eventually decided to leave a grenade for me to get it over with -- of course, I had time for a jaunty "Goodbye!" before detonation.

Some people on GAF were REALLY good at RTCW and ET. I'm hoping Eggo drops by this thread -- he was an AWESOME engineer.

Sorry. I just saw a lot of talk about the single player campaign and I originally thought all the screens were from SP but now I noticed that there's a shot of Beach up there as well.

Carry on. :p

I spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours playing this online. 64 players on depot was divine. Even was active in a clan and all that. I liked ET, but not as much.

I LOVED the hilarious accent to the voice commands to.

*Pops smoke*

"Affirmative, on ze way!"

Looks good for Wii.

LULZ. I stopped at the second level, because the enemies were too sympathetic (with their chatter and all, when some enemies were attacked by a mutant I stopped).

like pretty much everybody in this thread has said already, I hated the game's SP but loved the MP. well, hated is a strong word... but the SP really wasn't very good, and it actually got worse as the game went along.

Awesome game. MP_Beach was one of the best multiplayer experiences I've ever had, only to be trumped by the excellent Wolfenstien: Enemy Territory. Can't wait for the next Wolfenstein.

RTCW was my most played Live game on the OG Xbox....even more than Halo 2. Beach Invasion may be the only map in my multiplayer gaming history that I could play over and over again without ever getting sick of it. "He's going long...no short!!"

Oh and I think the voiceover/announcer with the accent in CoD4 is subconsciously making me enjoy the game more because he reminds me of RTCW. :lol

It was all about mp_ice for me!

"The Enemy's Weakened"

RtCW was a great game. I mostly liked it for the single player, as online multiplayer FPSes never hold my interest for long, but I had a lot of fun with it and it was one of the few FSPes I played online at all. Enemy Territory was a nice extension of the multiplayer, but it was kind of too bad that it was free because as a result all of the original game's multiplayer maps got abandoned, as everyone switched over to ET, and ET didn't have many maps... the original had more. It did add some other stuff, though. Still, it's too bad that there wasn't a single player expansion... the single player campaign was great fun, and I'm sure it took longer to finish than I played the multiplayer for.

Loved RTCW multiplayer....I mean ALOT!

Singleplayer was alright but I remeber I was crushed that they DIDN'T FUCKING USE NATIVE GERMAN FOR THE NPCS!

...I mean, that shit made the franchise

...oh and I remeber never having any ammo for the fucking Thompson! ......come to think of it, reminded me of a similiar situation with the SCAR in Crysis! :lol

I put a ridiculous amount of time into the beach MP map.

Demo released perfectly around the end of DAOC beta iirc and a few from our clan just went apeshit on it.

Document room with the Venom chaingun was my domain. I'd roam those hallways like a beast with my Medic friends.
