REVIEW: Game Boy Micro Misses the Mark

Deku said:
that said, what is really hurting the micro right now is that NOA is so ham fisted about bringing Play-Yan stateside. Micro + Play-yan = winner. Even if play-yan sales stateside is modest, that's one market Nintendo won't be reaching this year with the micro.
Who's going to buy a Micro, a Play-yan and an SD card for media?

Frankly, Nintendo dropped the ball with not including the Play-Yan in the Micro hardware. It wouldn't be an iPod Shuffle killer, but it would be the only device that i know of that size that has a great library of games and plays music and videos.

at $99 i'm almost embarrased to ask for it for xmas or b-day (can't afford to buy it right now) just so whoever gives it to me isn't ripped off.

and this author seemed to miss the point of the GBM too

SD card? i have a 256 MB card in my old digican I can use anyday.

You might as well have asked the same question when the PSP came out.
At least the Micro-Play-Yan combo can actually be a be an MP3 player that is actually utilitarian and doesn't feel like a carrying a giant fragile glass rose in my backpack.

But I'm still searching for a compelling reason to spend $99 on this machine, the smallest portable gaming system I've ever used

Oh dear me. Come on genius, it's not too hard to figure out. It's called the Game Boy Micro for a reason you know. :lol :lol :lol

I'm defienetly getting one with the black faceplate, looks way to sexy for me to pass up. The tiny screen may be problematic, I'll probably have to play it several inches from my eyes.

hmmm...in other unpredictible news today...

I've been playing around with a friend's unit for a while.... now I'm a big GBA SP fan but the Micro just feels redundant. It's more portable and has a brighter screen, but the SP is very portable already. Why bother?

The deal breaker is that the Micro's screen is just way too small, a point in the yahoo review I agree with. I prefer the SP's screen by far.

I'll wait for the inevitable DS SP for my next Nintendo handheld upgrade.

AHEM!

I do think it is overpriced but it will sell nonetheless. It's closest competitor at this price point is (guess what?) the DS and the two together wil make Nintendo craploads on money... They will be making crazy money with the micro itself. Any software to go with it is gravy. It should be $80 at the most tho >:(

Pretty soon I'm going to have a GBA for every GBA game I own, so I will never have to take the carts out. But not for $100. I expect them to sell a shitload for xmas then poeple will get over it. I think most of them will be bought as gifts by game additcs lovers. :lol

Your girlfriend walks into the store: "hey what should I get my boyfriend that loves games"

sales douche: "check out this new GBmicro!"

GF: "oh that cute! oh its new? he'll love it!"

bottom line if I got one for xmas that would be cool, but I'm not paying $100 for another GBA. :D

The most messed up part about the Micro situation is that it's going to sell like hotcakes. So no matter what we say, Nintendo wins.

>_<

Why? There's only one group. Therefore, singular.

Indeed. Companies are singular, teams are plural. And it's also "couldn't care less", not "could care less" - the latter means there is something else you care less about, which defeats the whole point of saying you don't care less than the subject. Like, you couldn't care less about the above statement.

:lol

I do think the Yahoo article misses the point somewhat, but Nintendo sure as hell overpriced the machine in any case. I find it funny that the company is so family oriented when it keeps pissing off parents by updating its most popular machine in such short intervals. Four of my pre 10 year old cousins got SPs last year, and started screwing when I told them DS was on the way. Micro is industrial sized salt in the wound.

Alas, it's still clever business...

C.

Edit: And I'm also a Brit (and journo to boot) -- regional differences often devolve into whatever the majority fights for. Red will eventually become blue, and blue will eventually become red, if enough people say it...

While I would have preferred to pick up a Micro for around $50, I'm hoping that the Micro's release will bring down the price of the SP to that level.

it is also clearly marketed towards those who don't own existing Nintendo handhelds

If this is true, then I feel sorry for them. Have you been in retail stores lately? GBA software selection is limited. They are limited in the space they're allotted especially competing with DS, PSP, XB, PSX, PS2, GC and PC shelf space. But they're also limited because freakin used games take up 1/2 the space too. And because GBA titles in particular go OOP so quickly, unless the game came out within the last 6 months, you're going to have a heckuvatime finding a particular game unless it's through Ebay.

ie There are 5 Megaman Battle Network games now, but I've been to many retailers this past month and I've seen one store that had a copy of MMBN4, while all the others only have MMBN5.

It's a sucky time to be a late adopter.

I must say I'm a bit confused by Nintendo's decision to release the Micro. I'm still trying to figure out how it is actually better than the SP, despite being a tad smaller. Was there something wrong with the SP that was keeping it from achieving massive sales?

And what's with the Micro being a step backwards? No GBC/GB support; not compatible with previous GBA/SP devices without an adapter; different AC charger; and it should've at least included the wireless function that some of the newer GBA games are supporting (ie Mario Golf, Tennis, Pokemon). This actually ticks me off a little.

There is no defense for this Micro costing the same as a GameCube.

better library of games?

I keed. It's a rip-off. But there are a lot of stupid people out there, value isn't the bottom line.

I would get a Micro if I didn't have 4 other products that played GBA games.

But, I can see where Nintendo is try to appeal to the style over research crowd.

This useless thread is half GBmicro bitching(don't buy one then!)
and half 8th grade english tutorial.
SAD.
I have wasted 4 valuable minutes of my life.

I don't care anymore. I was debating this after the annoucement of the price, but I just do not care.

I want one. I'll bite. I need to play AW2, "Astro Boy" and Gunstar Super Heroes on this now. Right FUCKING now. That's it, I snapped.

I don't care if Che says he can't read the text, I'll chalk it up to his old man eyes.

peace

Eh, the Micro doesn't appeal to me because of the price and the fact that it only plays GBA games. I think I'm just going to buy a replacement SP. Which reminds me..what can I do with a broken SP? The screen doesn't get images anymore, but everything else works. Should I just take it all into EB and see if they can give me something for it?

Better idea is to contact Nintendo in your area. They'll probably fix it for a nominal fee. Hell, if it's a year old only they might just send a new one for free.

I feel the micro is just a complete waste of time and will only confuse the mothers and kids and weaken DS sales.... effectively hurting Nintendo in the long run.

Give me an SP with a headphone port, the better backlit screen but at the ORIGINAL AND ALREADY SMALL ENOUGH screen size, and built-in PlayYan and I'd gladly pay $100 for a new GBA. As is, I just don't see the point of the Micro - it isn't really all that much smaller than the SP, they slapped a cellphone screen on it, and there's no decent way of protecting the screen outside of buying Nintendo's oh-so-convenient replacement covers.

That said, I'm sure my mind will concur up some retarded justification for buying the thing.

if you think these will sell at 100 bones then imagine the craze they would have had at 50 bones.

i would have gotten one and i don't even need one . at 50 i just would not be able to pass it up. at 100, i could care less about having one.

it's a novilty item to me.
