Revisiting Final Fantasy XII: please help me beat this game

It seems in FFXII's case it wasn't the game's fault, but me forcing my own playstyle on the game when it's not designed around my playstyle. :(

You could give Basch the Fomalhaut and Berserk him, would make his meter go up more..then again you can get as many of them as you want; the pot respawns. Guns don't work well against bomb-family monsters and maybe a couple others, though.

I got two Deathbringers! One for Basch, one for Fran. Bring on the pain!

I fought Gilgamesh in the Lhusu Mines and WOW. TOTAL FANGASM. He ran away after I beat him though and I have no clue where he went. I forgot to steal from him and saved after the fight. Am I fucked?

I have a question in regards to supplies:

What armor should I be using now?

I got a Bubble Belt! Basch + Bubble Belt + Self: Berserk + Deathbringer = :O :O :O Where can I get more Bubble Belts?!

How can I get Bravery?

How the hell does Reverse work? I see this thing at the clan show that reverses item effects or something I don't see how that could be useful at all?

Where can I stock up on X potions?

Where can I get Arise? Is there a list of Magick I should be able to get up to this point? I still haven't set off for Giruvegan. :D

Going by a guide, you can steal the Genji Glove and Genji Shield from him on the first fight. The Shield is a decent one, but it's not a gamebreaker. The Genji Glove increases your chance of doing multiple hits with your weapon. So..they're gone, but you should be ok without them. The Genji Glove is really good though.

Armor..I'm not really sure. I bought Caribineer Mail or whatever it was I think at Balfonheim.

You can get at least one Bubble Belt at the Barheim Passage in a pot, but you need a Diamond Armlet for it. A guide says you can buy them at the Clan Shop once you've beaten 16 mobs and have over 200,000 clan points (Riskbreaker rank). That's probably the easiest way to get more.

Bravery is sold at the Clan Shop when you are Riskbreaker rank.

Reverse didn't seem to work very well in the normal one..basically it makes stuff that hurts you (physical attacks/spells) heal you, and vice-versa.

The item that reverses status stuff..the Nihopaloa? It's a pretty useful (and somewhat cheap) item. It causes whatever status effect the item is supposed to cure, and pretty much is guaranteed to work if the target isn't immune to it. So you're supposed to equip it and use status-curing items on badguys. So the best thing to use while you have it equipped is a Remedy, as that will inflict all the statuses that it's supposed to cure at once (so it can blind+poison+silence+slow+who knows). Also useful would be to use the item that cures the 'disease' ailment on badguys that heal themself..they won't be able to if they are diseased. Just take off the accessory if you need to revive someone with a Phoenix Down, as it won't revive..I never tried using a PD on a badguy with it equipped, so I don't know if that would do death on them or not.

You can buy X-Potions at Balfonheim. If they're not at the item shop, then it's not until after you beat Giruvegan.

Arise is buyable at Balfonheim after you beat Giruvegan.

First rule of RPGs: Have multiple saves! Then you wouldnt have to worry.

You dont play enough WRPGs, I can tell =P

I used a party of Ashe (leader), Basch and Vaan with the following gambits:

Ally any> Arise
Ally 50%< Curaja
Ally any> Chronos Tear
Ally any> Smelly Salts
Ally any> Vaccine
Ally Esuna
Foe 100%> Steal (1 character with Thief cuffs)
Foe flying> (Strongest black magic)
Party Leader's target> Attack
Foe nearest> Attack
Self>Libra

I added a self bubble gambit for the post game since enemies hit VERY hard and I preferred to use accessory slots for other things

I used that set up for majority of the game only changing for certain boss fights.

It sucks for you that you didn't steal the Genji Gloves from Gilgamesh. Masamune (Reward for defeating Gilgamesh) + Genji Glove = Insane hit rate that results in mass damage in fights where the enemy has a lot of HP.

Deathbringer is crap for where you are in the game. You should be weilding a Ultima Blade right now and I would advise gathering the loot to create one from the bazaar.

The loot required is:

Adamantite (x2)- I steal (guaranteed steal) from Thalassinon (Trophy monster in the Phon Coast) or just go defeat Adamantitan's in the Cerrobi Steppe who drop the loot at a 8% chance with the Hunters Monograph. It's also a reward for completing the Darksteel hunt.

Death Powder (x2)- Defeat Bogey's in the Zertinan Cavern. Good drop rate at 16% so this won't take long.

Gnoma Halycon (x1)- Steal from Gnoma Entite. You find them in the Westersand during a sandstorm. Simply equip Thief cuffs and steal, if you don't get what you want simply zone 1 screen and the enemy will return to neutral and you will be able to steal from him again, so simply do this until you get it and with thief cuffs this will not take long. This enemies attacks hurt, so steal with one character and run away with your remaining characters.

With the Ultima Blade you will find the game much easier. You can also create a Tournesol, which imo is the best weapon in the game, but that's a lot of work with loot that has low drop rates which may not interest you. The Ultima Blade however is very quick and simple to create and a very powerful weapon with 118 attack power.

Either way, this game fucking rocks. I loved it.

Here is an easy way to make the game much easier.

-Get nihopalaoa.
-Stock up on remedies
-Cast remedy on the enemy
-???
-profit

The game is actually a lot more fun because you have long stretches where all you do is go from point a to point b however you like. If you don't do the hunts, the game gets very very challenging with regular enemies and that is a secret to why it's just so damned entertaining to replay through.

FF12 receives way more flack than it deserves simply because it's focus is on pre-battle prep and thus more tactics involved in planning than during actual combat. But at the same time, if you like this sort of game you will be coming up with new ways to entertain yourself by limiting certain characters to certain weapons, licenses, etc. The very many challenges on youtube are a testament to this.

Bubble Belt + Bravery + Protect = LOL

72 hours in, and I finally get the airship.

Worst airship in Final Fantasy EVER. You can't even explore it, it's just a map. At least in FFX and FFX-2 you can explore and do stuff in your airship and use a map when you want to go some place.

balls balls balls

It nice to just run through zones though

Orange save crystals are the real airship in the game. You can explore the airships in the towns with airports though..and buy some stuff. And find the invisible bow in international version!

Help, I'm just started playing. I'm on the The Leviathan and just got Ashe out of jail. We are making a break for it but there is just too many guards. What should I do? Am I too low level, Vann is level 10 right now?

Level shouldn't matter in that area. Regardless I think you can grind a few sections and there's a shop nearby where you can get what you need. There's also a couple areas where you can turn off the alarm for a limited amount of time.

Anyway Basch + Berserk + Zodiac + Haste & other buffs is just insane. 9999...less than a second later..9999...again and again until everything dies. He ate the Carrot like it was nothing.

fucking bullshit giruvegan crystal. I've been stuck here for the last 2 weeks and its completely put me off the game. Its probably the worst area in the game.

No sense of where you are (had to get a map off gamefaqs but I only did it after getting sick of this sort of dungeon.

And the bomb mom clusters keep killing my entrie party. Its just so frustrating. At this point in time, I'm just about there with regards to calling it quits.

My characters are level 46ish now and I just don't see how to get past this. Tried various gambits. protect+shell+vanish. Die die die die die.

RAGE RISING.

Did you try fleeing?

Or Libra for their weakness?

The crucial thing about FXII is this:
If you ever find regular field/dungeon monsters a problem, you need to either rearrange your gambits or (and this is more likely) backtrack and grind until you can handle them comfortably.

Having 100% the game twice I can tell you with absolute confidence that its never worth getting in over your head - if you're struggling the game will beat you down without mercy and keep you down until you cry uncle.

My first playthrough was painful as I hadn't grasped this and tried to treat the game like FFXI, where MGS'ing across hostile zones is part of the fun. This was a really bad move -I cannot stress this enough!

No matter how pimped your characters are there are bits in FFXII that will test you hard, so don't worry about getting over-powered. Do worry about going in underpowered though, the Gambit system is basically there to extend your endurance, and make trivial battles a breeze.

But if you are basically outmatched, there's not a lot it can help you with. So swallow your pride and beat a tactical retreat.

I've been thinking about replaying this recently. Has anyone tried going through the game just using guns? Is it ok or too hard to bother?

If you get the Fomalhaut early(you can get 3 of them early in fact), a gun only run won't be too hard. You'll still need the proper ammo though.

I'll have to look that up then I guess. Are there any enemies that are completely resistant to guns?

I could have sworn there's at least a couple. They're probably optional though. Most of the time if they're immune or strong to something you can just try a different kind of ammo.

Fomalhauts require that you can access the Antlion hunt(it's in one of the areas just after you beat him/her). They're in a random chest with a fairly high droprate. There's a save somewhat close so you can keep reloading until you get three of those guns.

My only problem is guns are sloooowww. Course compared to getting the Zodiac Spear or Masamune Fomal's are easy peasy.

Bombs are resistant to guns..probably some other monsters too. Bomb King fight could be interesting, but it looks like level 1 playthroughs pretty much all recommend guns for everyone.

Actually the chest with the Fomalhaut is the one right behind the Antlion(it spawns at a dead end in a tunnel so the chest shouldn't be hard to find). It has about a 12%(I don't really remember) chance of spawning.

Fomalhaut

It's a rifle named after a Star, what do you expect? :D

This is the Fomalhaut system by the way:

Sauron in Ivalice, confirmed.:lol

The system, sun in the middle, and two planets are all named Fomalhaut.

It's also the easiest ultimate weapon to find.
