I didn't get the Tim Allen joke. Was it something to do with the Globes?
Tim Allen is a nobody next to Tom Hank's accomplishments basically.

Of course, Tim Allen has made more money and was a super star for Home Improvement & Toy Story but it was still funny.

I hate losers like this who try so hard to be edgy and be like "I'll say what I want".. They always attack targets that cant really retaliate at all.

I work in TV but I'm fairly grounded in reality, or at least try to be. Guy I work with obviously isn't and you can just tell he imagines himself up on the stage at the Golden Globes one day, basking in his moment of glory. (Yes, at the Golden Globes, that ever prestigious event.) He was so furious about Ricky's performance, he's literally hostile about it whenever it's brought up. I tried pointing out that none of the jokes were directed at people in technical careers (like he and myself are), but rather at the filthy rich superstars who should probably have thicker skin. Didn't matter.

What I thought was funny is justs how pissed in particular he got about the whole Tim Allen thing, because that particular joke is only really cruel if you assume that Tim Allen should be really insecure about his own career, embarrassed by his accomplishments. The guy insists that he should! He actually said, "Yeah, well what has the guy done lately?" To which it's like, wait, aren't you being more insulting of the man's entire life than Ricky was? And he's not even doing it for the sake of a joke!

Michael Cera?

It's shocking how irate people get over Ricky's jokes. It's a good way to judge a person.

Oh.. This is why you're crying now. I get it. It's funny; if an athlete or a celebrity goes on and on about their space daddy, nary a peep. But if an atheist speaks, it's SACRILEGE. I mean, can you believe the nerve of the guy - making fun about the idea of two of every animal on a boat?
Grow a sack.

I'm an atheist. Gervais makes me almost embarrassed to be so. He's as bad as hardcore Christians.

But please, carry on talking bollocks.

I don't care one way or the other but how is it the same? When someone is thanking God, their god(s), or whatever they aren't making fun of atheists or anyone.

And I don't get the love hate relationship GAF has with Hollywood. We follow movies from scripts, re-writes, casting, photo stills, teasers, trailers, and then 100 plus page reaction threads. But when a comedian rips the same directors and actors we obsess over its "OMG GET EM RICKY SHOW THOSE ELITIST PRICKS!"

Then there are those who even claim they never watch the Golden Globes even though even before Ricky hosted we had official threads, bets on who would win, and everything else related to the show including fashion! But apparently NOW people will watch because Ricky is hosting again.

He should host but only because he is funny and makes the show better, not because he is some rebel showing up elitists who can't take it. Ricky is Hollywood himself. They can take it. This is the 3rd time he is hosting. And we should be applauding the Golden Globes for bringing him back, unlike say back in the day when MTV decided not to bring back Chris Rock and change the whole format of the show (now they only get hosts who aren't funny or won't take shots at musicians).

Some might get their feathers ruffled but he is doing what a good host is supposed to do, be funny and move the show along. But the whole idea that he is showing them up is ridiculous.

So will the award recipients show up?

Will Ricky's material be neutered down?
I don't think so.

I've loved pretty much everything Gervais has done, even his movies which have had middling critical success.

That being said, I've gotta say he did come across as a real asshole last time. His potshots were more petty than funny. The Tim Allen thing was pretty egregious - it wasn't edgy or taking down someone a peg, it was just straight-up mean-spirited.And his unrelenting desire to let everyone know he's an atheist gets old REALLY fast. His sign-off last year ("And finally, I'd like to thank God...for making me an atheist"). Yes, we get it. You don't like religion. Do we need to endlessly trumpet the fact?

One very funny man, but I suspect his ego has gotten a bit out of control and made him a mite insufferable.

Did you really just call the Gervais takedown of Tim Allen egregious? Tim Allen? The guy who built his career by grunting like a rooting pig while trying to tell jokes? Seriously? Wow...

Most comedians built their career on a schtick. Surely, Gervais isn't an exception to that. He's the rule. So it was silly to indicate that Allen is a nobody. Allen is more fortunate than most - moreso than Gervais probably especially considering background.

Like a lot of comedy, however, that didn't stop Gervais slamming him from being funny or allowed though.

I think Ricky has an obligation to take things up a notch. I think if he pushes it up just a bit, it'll be kind of a let down (like last year sort of was). He should really be trying to see how far is too far.

And I think the Tim Allen jab was the best one last year. So much punch in such an innocent remark. And how can Tim even get mad? "Oh, and you're just Tim Allen." It's entirely true, you're just not supposed to say it like that. He said it like being Tim Allen was worse than anything else he could have thrown. I loved it.

No, you are mistaken, good sir. I never said I am an internationally famous movie star with good looks and a devil may care attitude, so I could not possibly be that successful actor of which you speak. What would he possibly be doing on GAF anyway? Haha! Ha.

Everyone's accomplishments seem small compared to Tom Hanks. Everyone's. (Insert Warwick Davis joke?)

For people who think Ricky is a douchebag or asshole, you really need to look beyond last year at the Globes. That was a character. If you listen to any of his interviews, listen to the XFM Radio shows, or even watch The Office/Extras you'll know this guy is incredibly nice/down to earth. He's a genuine good person and it shows in his writing, his opinions on things and the way he carries himself in general.

Can't wait for Gervais to pretend to be edgy and anti-celebrity again!

Maybe after he's brought back for his third appearance people will stop thinking he's actually doing anything the Golden Globes don't want.

First of all, Ricky Gervais is fairly edgy. Second of all, he is not anti-celebrity just because he makes jokes about celebrities.

It seems like Hollywood does not have their heads so far up their asses they can't take a joke.

Your post makes it seem like you don't understand comedy at all. At the same time, you have an Eric Wareheimer avatar. I guess you just get high and like weird stuff.

I've seen it before, but it's sad to see how many people actually believe this is real.

Johnny you just lost another fan simply because of your childish ways of dealing with the situation that was nothing more than simple humor. The level of disrespect you showed should make you feel so embarrassed when you revisit this in the future .

You just called the creator of The Office a loser. I wonder what you do with your life? Do you understand comedy?

Not to mention the fact that his targets can retaliate publicly. They're celebrities and have the free will to speak their mind. Some of them do.

Awesome. We get another full year of Ricky bitching about the Globes every time he does press. People stopped giving a fuck the day after the show, but he still goes on about it ad nauseam. I like him as a host, but the constant chatter afterwards is annoying as fuck.

The issue is that comedy has its place. If you're gonna get on a soapbox, don't do it at a reward ceremony. I like Ricky Gervais a lot. He's hilarious, but it's clear that they're having him come back for the views/hits.

I'll give Ricky that it was funny the first time. Poignant maybe, but the second and third? You're fucking kidding me right? Now people are expecting to get jabbed and now it's a roast with trophies.

I just don't understand how anyone can think something is exciting or interesting in comedy when it's expected. Gervais will mock some very successful people he'd love to put in a sitcom, or some guy down on his luck that used to be famous. How exciting!

I don't give a shit if he hurts the feelings of a bunch of millionaires. I'm just not impressed that one hugely successful guy pretends to be an "outsider" to a group of highly successful people he actively tries to charm the rest of the year.

Can't believe people still say this after it got ripped by xkcd

I was talking about the guy with the Eric Wareheimer avatar who is talking so much trash on gervais, not the guy who I quoted; I agree with him.
Oh ok, my mistake.

Only in the context of the entertainment business could a millionaire who has been in three movies made by one of the most critically acclaimed and beloved studios of all time be considered someone down on his luck.

I'd love for you to explain that. He talks a lot, that's it. He doesn't try to limit anyone's rights. He's perfectly fine with people being offended by what he says, he respects there ability to express their opinions and very much supports honest speech.

As for his Golden Globes appearances, it was a comedy act meant to make people laugh. It comes from a funny place not a mean-spirited one. To get offended takes the joke seriously. And really people in Hollywood have to have a good sense of humor about these jokes because there are far worse things going on in their industry that don't get taken as seriously as some took his jokes.

He's as bad as hardcore christians? He hates and demeans gay people and is trying to reduce women to walking baby incubators? Even if you hate how he goes about explaining himself, he's clearly on the side of the non-existent angels.

Gervais is great. The fact that he's hosting is the only thing that will get me to watch the Globes.

My favourite Ricky quote of the night wasn't mentioned...

"I like a drink as much as the next man... unless that man is Mel Gibson."

Then Mel walks on stage. Just a brutal way to introduce a man.
