Ridge Racer PSP: Best Ridge Racer ever?

With tracks from every Ridge Racer game (except V, although perhaps the track(s) from V are unlockable?), the car selection and "feel" of Rage Racer (without a doubt the pinnacle of the series), the music stylings of Rage Racer and RRType 4 combined in one sleek package is just phenomenal. I can't imagine owning a PSP and not owning this game.

I can imagine owning a PSP and not owning this game since it seems like Namco shipped out 4 copies on PSP release!

Sorry Bob. :( BTW, NFL Street 2 is actually really good (aside from EA's horrendous load times that seem to plague all of their launch games), you should consider it. Can't wait for portable online Madden!! :lol

The Ridge Racer tracks that are in this game are the ones that were in V too, so they're countable. I prefer V narrowly, but it's a close fight. The drifting just feels too cheap in this one :)

No. maybe the second best Ridge Racer but not the best.

Rave Racer is STILL the best. as long as Rave Racer's City track remains exclusive to the arcade. (PSP Ridge Racer has Rave's Mountain track)

If it's not the best, it's damn close.

I'm soo happy to finally have Rave Racer tracks at home!! So awesome. I just unlocked Midtown Expressway, holy shit that is one awesome track, that shit had me jumping off the walls with excitement (I've wanted Rave Racer at home in any form for years)!!

I'm really interested in this game. I've only rented the original Ridge Racer on PSone when it first came out. Never played any other Ridge game. If this game is the ultimate collection of all the Ridge games I want to dig into and try it out!

Lumines
NFL Street 2
Ridge Racer
Wipeout Pure
Twisted Metal Head-On

Get any one of those and you're set.

Horrible ones that should be avoided:

NBA
Gretzky NHL

Are you talking about Midtown Expressway? If so see my post above.
:D

Ridge Racer V is better, and I've written at least 2 or 3 replies detailing why I think so. I might dig them up for this thread.

Definitely my favorite. Nothing will top the original and RRR for nostalgia, but aside from that, it's Ridge Racers all the way!

I'm still playing through it and I think it's a mighty close call between this one and R4 for me. I love the controls in this one (drifting is smooth as butter).

It has been said a million times already but I still can't believe this is on a handheld.

My guess is that the remaining Rave Racer tracks will show up in the sequel...which hopefully won't be too far off.

It's just standard with all new PlayStation products... I must have a Ridge Racer to go with them. I love that analog nubbin. Much more intuitive than analog w/the touch screen. :D

I'm not the RR aficianado that you all are....but I'll be damned if the drifting in this game isn't a lot of fun. Just an unbelievable title.

The City track is in the PSP version. :D

The DS am cry, Chris. The DS am cry.

So the analog nub works well with Ridge Racers? Do you have to use the L shoulder button much?

Using the L sholder button is what stops me from using the analog nub with Wipeout. I have pretty long fingers and it feels uncomfortable using the nub because you need to use the L + R shoulder buttons to help turn. But I'm using the nub like an analog stick by placing my thumb squarely on top. Maybe I need to use the nub a little further down on my thumb? Wipeout with the Dpad controls amazingly well, though! And it is much easier using the L shoulder button with the Dpad.

Haha.

Man, all of the positive impressions for this and MGA are destroying me. I knew I wanted them before, but, I wasn't quite ready to kill and maim, then. :(

Get a good pair of headphones and listen in as the music is MGA is amazing! I wouldn't say it is MGS3 level, but it is damn good. Listening to that aural quality while doing missions in MGA, or playing Wipeout, or playing Lumines nearly brings a tear to me eye! :D

Only if you feel an odd need to regularly change the camera angle. That's the default setting for the L trigger. R trigger is nitro.

MT allows for slightly higher top speeds, and if you know when to downshift, you can reduce speed loss on impact with walls and other cars and such.

Yes, it is to me. My only gripe with the game is that it's too easy even in it's final stages. I would have liked a fourth, more challenging league, but it's great nonetheless.

I love the game, but it does seem a little bit too easy. Though, it's okay because it's great fun. The soundtrack is awesome (the remix tracks from the previous RRs are great) and the upgraded track designs are amazing. Nitro just seems like an added gimmick to me since you really never need it, Aside from that though, an awesome title that deserves to be in everyone's PSP launch line-up.

I LOVE this game. I prefer it to Wipeout despite the slight drop in aesthetics comparitively. Time-tested racing mechanics make for a MUCH more approachable and paced experience than Wipeout's pseudo learning curve, and the age of many of these tracks bely the brilliance they still exhibit slingshotting yourself around each bend.

It's my personal pick for best of launch right now.

RR5 is probably the most difficult in the franchise, particulary Hard mode which demanded inhuman corner-kissing just to have a shot at merely placing on some of the midrange events.

I still have a softspot for Rage though, the course layouts are pretty ingenious and car classes were uniquely distinct. Glad to see some Rave tracks represented here since I never did play much of it.

R4 on the other hand...well besides the visuals and music, what DID you people ever see in that "game"?

Too easy? Wow, what the fuck is wrong with me. I haven't won a single race; get in 9th every time.

Maybe it's cause it's my first ridge racer? Any tips?

::sigh:: O.K. guys rant mode on.......

Where do I begin? No I do not own a PSP yet so I haven't played Ridge Racers. But I could write a friggen BOOK on how much I hate Namco right now. I am so sad and bitter that this game was not done justice and released on the PS2 instead of the PSP. I've been waiting so so sooooo long for a true RR sequel for my beloved PS2 and what does Namco do? Release it for a damn handheld, giving me no option to play it on my 65" big screen TV with a FF steering wheel.

I know you guys are happy with your purchase and I'm glad to see many GAF members finally jump on the RR bandwagon. But you must understand that I am the QUINTISSENTIAL RR whore in this forum, and started playing this series from the getgo with a steering wheel. I would feel absolutely NAKED playing an RR game without one.

I would buy a PSP right now if it had TV-Out and allowed me to play on my TV. I'd buy it if I could at least connect my NeGcon to it and play. It has neither of these things! So you're damn right....I'm fucking steamed right now.

Why did the orignal PS One get FOUR fucking RR games and the PS2 has only ONE????? Why has every other major Namco franchise been given at least two ports to the PS2 while RR has only been given one?

NAMCO WHY ARE YOU TORTURING ME?????? GIVE ME A NEW RIDGE RACER FOR EITHER THE PS2 OR PS3...PLEASE!!!

[/rant mode off]

C'mon Dark10x back me up here....

It's kinda like RR5 if you can remember. Lots of scripted Tours to race, and lots of cars you continually unlock along the way. There isn't anything really unique about the game setup, there are multiple classes of cars/races that generate more speed with each upgrade. It's pretty much a Ridge Racer museum which the game celebrates with style and slick production values. Fans will love it, but regardless, the presentation is phenomenal and the racing model is very breezy and exciting.

Wipeout is also very good, and slightly prettier, but there is a more complex learning curve to handling those narrow tracks and sliding routines. RR is just eminently more playable out of the box.

Oh and Alex, seriously get Phantom Dust sometime. It's $20 well spent.

wait a second. I know there is a city track in Ridge Racers / Ridge Racer PSP, but I do not believe (or know that it is) the actual City track from Rave Racer.

is it?

Isamu, anyone?

Read my previous post....

Sweet Jesus, it is! it is!

bows down.

omg

edit: Isamu, I totally agree with your post man. I was EXPECTING "New Ridge Racer"
(the one after R Racing Evolution whatever) to be on PS2, with an upgraded port of the original (I will find the link to that later).

now, I am looking for your other post (or was that it) ...did you mention Rave Racer somewhere else ?

Both Rave Racer tracks are in RRs. The difference is that the city track is now set to nighttime. Also the two brand new tracks in RRs are both BASED on the Rave Racer tracks (not to be mistaken for the Rave Racer tracks themselves which are also included as mentioned). So you have TWO city tracks and TWO mountain tracks. 2 of them being updated but completely 1:1 reproductions of the Rave Racer tracks while the other 2 being crazy new versions of the same idea (crazy city highways and awesome backgrounds, and crazy mountain road with tons of winding shit and a tunnel) but completely original. This is proof that not only do WE love Rave Racer, the PSP team LOVES RAVE RACER TOO! :D
