that picture is AWESOME. i guess because of all the trailers for state of play i was expecting fat russell crowe with his retarded melvin haircut. but he looks great there, and i love the subdued attire.

high hopes for this.

YES ALL OVER MY FACE.

I Fucking love Russell Crowe.

Wow, that picture gives me hope, since Russell actually looks to have trimmed down for the first time in almost a decade. Fingers crossed.

I'll break it down for you how this will go. I don't think it's going to be Russel fighting himself in a Van Dam kind of way.

More like...picture this.

The Sheriff of nottingham, proud and honourable defender of justice. Does what is right and believes he works for a rightious king. Soon starts to feel uneasy at actions he sees around him and the evil things he is ordered to do by the king. Has a turn of conscience and becomes Robin Hood, at first plays both parts trying to take down the corrupt from the inside while helping his gang evade capture, is betrayed and found out and must escape, heads to the woods and is on the run where he begins to expand his small army.

Is eventually caught and killed/executed in some manner but serves as an inspirational message and hero to others to fight corruption. Either kills king himself at end of movie before dying, or king is later killed by rebellion/assassination. Cause the bad guy HAS to die at the end of the movie.

I think that is how it would play out with lots of shadowing meetings and conspiracies etc...

This is the most retarded thing I've ever read. He obviously just gets caught in the beam that splits atoms from Superman 3 and is divided into two halves.

I cannot fucking wait for this. I've always dug the Rogin Hood mythos, I even love the Kostner movie (not sure if it was well received or not)

too bad ridley couldnt get crowe in kingdom of heaven, the DC is awesome, but how much better would it have been with crowe in the lead as opposed to orlando bloom

He is the reason why it is not a great movie.

I hope this movie is made in to a big political analogy that revolves around Crowe slinging arrows at Medieval-era Libertarians who cannot stop whining about spreading the wealth around.

Russel Crowe is not playing two roles in this. Ridley Scott dropped that plot idea a while ago. It's just Crowe as Robin Hood, that is it.

Can't wait, it is apparently going to be done with the intention of an R rating. Big epic very violent Robin Hood.

Personally, I need to see 1 more set photo before I can pre-determine how good the film is going to be me.

As far as reinterpretation of Robin Hood-lore goes nothing beats Robin & Marian; you had Sean Connery playing Robin Hood, Audrey Hepburn as Maid Marian, and Robert Shaw as the Sherrif of Nottingham (as a bonus you had Dumbledore as King Richard). The movie itself is pretty somber, an aging Robin Hood comes back from the Crusades to find Maid Marian a nun; story of senescence, love lost, paths not taken, etc. etc. etc.

Robin and Marian is an excellent film, one of my favorites. Don't spoil yourselves with the wiki, just find it somewhere and watch it!

SOLO! Is Robin & Marian worth checking out? You are the expert on all things Sean Connery.

Despite my love for all things Connery, this is one of the few films hes done that I've never seen. But I plan to change that.

One Connery movie that you (and everyone) should see though is The Man Who Would Be King. Its from 1975 and co-stars Michael Caine, is directed by John Huston (The Maltese Falcon), and is one of the most awesome adventure movies ever made.

Robin & Marian is pretty good. Kinda grim at times. 'Hood (Connery) is pretty old and worn-out from going crusading with King Richard so it's probably not what most people would expect from a Robin Hood movie. Still entertainable.

Best Robin Hood production to this day, in my opinion, is the BBC miniseries (Robin of Sherwood) - both seasons. Kevin Costner's movie ain't got shit on Michael Praed and Jason Connery.

stolen from rllmuk:

Matthew Macfadyen is set to play the Sheriff of Nottingham

Initially the screenplay for Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood called for Russell Crowe to play a dual role as both the Sheriff of Nottingham and Robin Hood, but that idea was dropped early on. Scott decided to go a different direction. He has said in interviews that the Sheriff character is “less important”, and that the main villain of the story is actually the country of France. After countless casting announcements, not one mention of the actor who would play the Sheriff, even though there was mention of the character in the official plot synopsis. I wasn’t really interested in many of the news stories tonight so I decided to do some digging, and have found the answer.

34-year-old British actor Matthew Macfadyen, best known as Fitzwilliam Darcy in the 2005 film version of Pride and Prejudice, has supossedly been cast in the role of the Sherrif of Nottingham. Macfadyen revealed that he had been cast in “Nottingham” (the previous title of the project) at a public Masterclass event on April 17th. The actor’s agent finally confirmed the role details with the Darcylicious fansite. Macfadyen most recently appeared as John Birt in Frost/Nixon. His credits also include Death at a Funeral, Incendiary and the BBC mini-series Little Dorrit.

Macfadyen was Darcy in the Pride & Prejudice with Kiera Knightley.

Well, Body of Lies came out last year, for starters....

EDIT: I see what you're getting at. My answer now is: who knows/cares?

I agree. I think Crowe would have made a better sheriff, but I'm sure this will turn out fine.
Looking at the pictures of both actors, I was thinking the same thing. Matthew would have made a better Robin Hood, in my opinion.

As the men rode through the village, extras playing peasants cowered by an old stone bridge as they hid from the Sheriff of Notthingham's trouble-making troupe.

...

Producers sent out a casting call for 600 extras to play the Sheriff's cronies.

Oscar-winner Crowe was not on set this week, but his character is expected to return to the same village set and 'give back to the poor'.

The upcoming film has a stellar cast, with Australian actress Cate Blanchett as Maid Marion, Dame Eileen Atkins as Eleanor of Aquitaine and Matthew MacFadyen as the Sheriff.

Sienna Miller was originally cast as Marion, but was replaced by Blanchett after she was deemed too young to play 45-year-old Crowe's love interest.

Speaking of Blanchett's casting, Crowe enthused: 'It's great, she's fantastic, my first choice.

'I know her only from afar. The most time we've spent together is when we both got made into stamps recently.'

Dame Eileen was only cast in recent weeks after Vanessa Redgrave pulled out following the tragic death of her daughter Natasha Richardson after a skiing accident in March.

...

He also cycled daily in preparation for the film, which is out in May next year.

Producer Brian Glazer said: 'He doesn't have the old Robin Hood tights. He's got armour. He's very medieval. He looks, if anything, more like he did in Gladiator than anything we're used to seeing with Robin Hood.

'He's trying to create equality in a world where there are a lot of injustices. He's a crusader for the people, trying to reclaim some of the ill-gotten gains of the wealthy. That's a universal theme.'

This movie will probably be pretty awesome. Let's just hope it's not Gladiator redux, which is what you know the studio is going to aim for.

Man, I was really hoping they would cut this chase sequence out. It's the one part of the myth that I never really bought.

Let's hope it's a Kingdom of Heaven: Director's Cut redux, because that film is fucking awesome.

I loved Gladiator I just want to see a historical epic with a different look/feel/tone from Crowe and Scott.

I actually think Gladiator is a better, more entertaining movie than Kingdom of Heaven. Something about Kingdom of Heaven that I find.. I dunno ... distancing. Still, it's a beautifully made movie and the director's cut is damn good.

So good. I wonder what color filters Ridley will use as far as predominant tones. I absolutely loved the vibrant look KoH had.
