RIFT goes free to play.

Told you, only a matter of time! All MMOs except WoW will eventually be this. Now Warhammer needs to be next.

Nope.

The developers that are still left on Warhammer Online have said they put together Free to play proposals several times to EA and EA turned them down every time.

Its takes money and effort to convert an MMO to Free to play and those are 2 things that EA wont afford to Warhammer Online.

Cool i always liked Rift. Have the expansion, gonna be playing it again then. It was a mather of time since most EU servers are pretty dead only a few have high population. But i liked that the servers are in the netherlands any i have the lowest ping i could think of like no other mmo did.

What a joke. What a wonderful gaming experience this must be.

Huh? It's just cosmetic stuff, pretty standard for F2P. At least it isn't "PURCHASE THESE ULTRA DELUXE RUNES™ TO BECOME THE STRONGEST PLAYER IN ALL OF RIFT!"

I imagine the boosts are just EXP boosts and the like to level faster.

Edit: Ah, here we are.

All of our content is available completely for free: every quest, every chronicle, every dungeon, every continent, every level, and every raid. You can level to 60 without spending a dime. You can earn the best gear in the game without giving us a credit card. No tricks; no traps.

The RIFT Store will have a variety of boosts available to increase your XP gain or token gain -- but these are just accelerations of things you can already earn. We will also be offering mounts, costumes, treasure boxes, storage space, more role slots, more wardrobe slots, and a slew of services.

We will also have gear for sale. Our guidelines for gear on the store are generally as follows: The best gear in the game must be earned and high-level items on the store must also be available to be earned in-game.

Eh, not so bad. The gear thing is a bit odd, but we'll see.

Anyways I've heard a lot of good things about this game, looks pretty neat to me. I'll check it out.

Seems like a pretty generous F2P option. It's always nice when a company opts not to nickel and dime EA-style.

Sorry if this is mentioned, but is this totally free to play, or will the core game/expansions still need to be purchased?

All of the content is free including the Storm Legion expansion content. Though it seems like the Storm Legion class souls are locked unless you bought the expansion once F2P hits. You'll probably have to pay for those on the RIFT Store.

my interest in GW2 has dwindled. I was always interested in Rift but the subscription turned me off. Look forward to getting into this game when it goes free. How is the PvP? Is it open-world? That's something I really missed in GW2.

I tried Rift once and my first impression was a Wow ripoff made by amateurs. I'll admit first impressions aren't everything, but damn the characters models, animations and ui were pretty ugly.

I had the same impression. I still have the sweet CE though and I'm using the nice Steel Series mouse pad for my imac..... so not a total wash :/

Well that sucks a bag of arse!

Every single other MMO is coming out and going free to play, and the only MMO I ever enjoyed and wanted to go free in WAR seems like it never will. :( :(

Warhammer Online is the game that would benefit from Free to Play the most! It suffers hugely because it's population is terrible, 3/4 of the game is the PvP aspects, and without people it makes the game worthless.

I bought WAR at launch and I like it. The only reason I stopped is I play very few hours a month or so so a subscription is a wasteful for me. I'd definitely get back in the universe if they made it F2P. I am baffled as to why it didn't yet, even though other 'big' MMOs before and after it did it.

I'm pretty surprised WAR is still running truth be told. I did have fun with it shortly after it came out though, the PvP was cool. Is it not full F2P yet?

Then again there are plenty of MMOs with less than 1k players still kicking and receiving updates.

I'd go back as well for sure, and they would probably get some money out of me as well!

They tested the F2P waters with opening up the Tier 1 zone to free to play, that zone was always pumping with action after they implemented that, and so many people found it fun with the population that they never paid for their subscription again, just making new characters over and over in the free tier 1 zone.

How that doesn't show them that making the whole game F2P isn't a slam dunk I've got no idea...

So what subscription based MMOs are left besides WoW?

Eve Online, hit 500,000 subscribers recently

Final Fantasy 11, still going strong

Final Fantasy 14, launching this summer

Blade and Soul, Korean version

ArcheAge, Korean version

SW:TOR, yeah this is Free to play but it does have over 500,000 paying a $15 monthly subscription

So, the $15 a month model isnt quite dead yet.

All these free MMOs add pressure to Blizzard which is only a good thing.

I can't wait till FF14 bombs again. Also Elder Scrolls Online will be funny to watch.

Honestly. I recently went back to SWTOR after quitting shortly after release (after getting to 50, messing with alts etc..).

I am VERY impressed with how good the game is now. The leveling is still the best part, but they have fixed a lot of the issues people have. The engine is always working amazingly, and it is IMO one of the best looking MMO's on the market at this point.

The issues with SWTOR, is EA. It is fairly clear, from what former developers said, that EA was way to involved. The guys running EA, are not gamers. They are suits with business, marketing, accounting degrees. EA was trying to recruit a friend of mine who works for one of the big 4 firms, simply because of where he works. They didn't care if he played videogames, they didn't care if he liked them.

SWTOR's biggest issue now is some of the restrictions F2P offers. Although they sound way worse then they are, they stop a lot of people from checking out the game. This is directly EA's fault.

Developers are gamers just as much as you or I. They don't go into a project wanting to create a copy of World of Warcraft, or something with tons of bugs. They are simply forced to play the hand they are dealt. Developers don't decide on F2P models, people with business degrees do. Much like in any entertainment field, the people creating the art virtually never get the final say on the product.

Lucas went through this with the Original Star Wars. He didn't want to work with a big studio. He says guys who know nothing about movies try to change you movie, edit your movie, recast the movie, and mess with it until it's barely yours anymore. The guy who brought Star Wars to 20th century fox, was almost fired the entire time it was being filmed b/c he gave Lucas freedom. Even after Star Wars was a hit, and they were working on Empire Strikes back, he had to quit b/c they were threatening to blacklist him from the industry if he didn't go in and tell Lucas how Star Wars should be made.

Games are very much like this. It's not a surprise some of the best games come from studios not beholding to large corporate entities.

You speak true.

As a Subscriber based monotone MMO, this game did not work. We all know it was no WoW-killer. We all know they had high hopes for it.

At the same time though;

1) several of the class stories (Imperial Agent, Sith Warrior, Jedi Knight etc) are really, really good. Some of the fedex quests have more mundane storylines that don't go deep, but I would say that every 5th "quest" you do is very interesting from a narrative perspective, with the class stories being really awesome. It is almost KOTOR quality. there is a limited amount of animations and this sometimes makes some not so-cinematic pieces, and not all the stories are equally good (Jedi Consular..).

2) this game has restrictions, but its totally viable as free 2 play. Somehow its Flashpoints and story missions work fine now that we have seen the grander perspective. No MMO is coming that is going to do story like this game. This is it, AFAWK.

The thing is - expectations change. your not getting 15 bucks worth of fun anymore, that constitutes a MMO team offering a high quality end game service. The end game raids and pvp has their community, but you do not need to focus on this. it's worth your time to explore the galaxy as a free 2 play player.

But if you are really smart, you find a real life friend or your girlfriend, roll two characters and advance together. fighting over who wins the conversations, trying to be good/bad/neutral is really fun. the combat is very slick, standard MMO. the customization with the UI is great and there is so much gear and possibilities now. This generic-gameplay MMO has found it's tune.

the media hacks on this game, but you are not getting the truth if you listen to their nonsense. their F2P style has really saved this game. It will never be a real MMO, but this game is one you owe it to yourself to play if you played KOTOR. Several times during my time with my Sith Warrior I got flashbacks back to the best times of KOTOR 1 and 2.

Playing my Imperial Agent has felt like playing Casion Royale/Skyfale in space with a mix of cowboy Bebop and firefly. The Agent storyline is the stellar one that hits you in the ass, and came out of nowhere. It's also very off branching from the regular fan service the game is loaded with.
The Bounty Hunter and Smuggler stories are fun, and deliver iconic Han Solo/Boba Fett stories while Jedi Knight is straight up KOTOR 1 light side.

Don't be a jack ass. Give this one another go. I am totally with you - this game failed hard when it came out. but there is just something about it that has redeemed it in my eyes. It's not like something new, but a combination of polish, value, added functionality, gameplay, rewards, novely, convenience, style, performance improvements and just a more much thriving community. I don't know how else to appeal to reason. Shed a tear for a BW Doctor, in heaven. !!

So I played some of the lite, where is AA in this game? Even with supersampling on in the options, I still get jaggies. Overriding through my ATI CCC does nothing at all.

so about that raptr and rift collaboration thing...
if i don't use that raptr, when the game goes f2p i won't be able to access the storm legion (dlc expansion) stuff?

This Raptr thing is amazing.

I played RIFT when it released, so it turns out I have well over the hours they ask for the free expansion. So now, I have a free expansion! And spaulders! And helmet!

Too bad I couldn't get 30 days free to tide me till June, but maybe I'll just pay for one last month before it goes free.

when the game goes f2p i won't be able to access the storm legion (dlc expansion) stuff?
The only thing known for sure right now is that the Storm Legion Souls will have to be paid for by new players.

If you are new to the game you will be able to access the Storm Legion content and get to maximum level without paying.

You will have limited bag slots though.

Eh Blizzard isn't under any pressure until they get to a point where they can make more money from F2P than subscription. Even if the population is dropping each quarter 8 million x 15 per month (plus/minus some since the Asian payment model is different) is a lot of money to ask from a strictly F2P game, I'd wager not a single f2p mmo makes as much money as WoW's subs each month currently. It's hard to really guess, though, how much real money 8 million+ people would shell out and if it would be more than the sub model, especially since they already have vanity mounts/pets you can buy with real money on top of the sub model.

On topic though, I am actually looking forward to trying this. Been dabbling in Neverwinter lately outside of my WoW time and I'm having a ton of fun playing a rogue but I'm not sure I will continue at max level since my max level friend said the high level dungeons are terrible atm and the pay to win is in full effect with the game. But in the mean time I've never ever tried Rift and know almost nothing about it so I am totally going to jump in, especially with that raptr reward deal thing.

So you want games to fail because ? ...

Man I don't understand some of you people.

Because it's freaking hilarious watching the official forums when that happens! And because it's so well deserved if the game actually turns out to be utter crap. I totally understand it.

This is partially correct at least the part that the folks who run the company have studied business. You'd be pretty wrong though to think that they don't play games. All of the execs I know at the top of the Games label play quite a bit.

As for your big 4 friend, I am not sure that playing games has anything to do with day to day accounting. My wife is currently an accountant at a game company (not EA) and her job is not much different than when she was doing the books for a farm commodity import/exporter other than the journal entries look a bit different. You'll find many accounting positions especially auditing require big 4 experience, a cursory search of accounting jobs on your favorite site will show this.

Some are, some aren't. I know developers that have never even played the games that they worked on.

Games are a business. Game companies exist to make profit with all other considerations secondary. If you don't make profit, you don't exist. It's no different than any other business in that regard.

Teams and developers that are successful and make a lot of money tend to have more creative freedom than teams that lose money.

I haven't meant many developers who "get it" that will make excuses about an evil publisher wrecking their project by meddling with it. The meddling normally comes when there are already serious issues with a particular title.

Imperial Agent is one of my favorite stories in any videogame I have played. I really wish more people could experience it.

People need to stop acting like you need 8 million people to be successful. SWTOR has 500k Subscribers, Eve has 500k players, Neverwinter is doing well, Rift is doing well, PS2 is doing well, not to mention all the other huge asian/indie MMO's that have been F2P from the start.

People don't realize more actual people play SWTOR or EVe each week than just about any of the top games on consoles. It's pretty damn impressive.

That said, I feel the themepark MMO is on it's way out. I feel the next generation of MMO is going to be a Sandbox, or a combination of Themepark/sandbox. People are tired of themepark MMO's, and the success of Sandbox games like Minecraft has no doubt interested developers. I said it before, and I will say it again, but if EvE had interactive planets you could create things on/own/build Coroperation HQ's, all while being in First Person, and had more twitch based controls, it would have MILLIONS of players.

If you look back at SWG, and ignore all it's bugs, the concept in that game were revolutionary, and many have not been done since. Player created cities with mayors, star ports, stores, player run vendors, tactical bases. The crafting was the most indepth and amazing I have seen. You explored and found rare materials in a dynamic world to have armorsmiths and weaponsmiths create your gear. Due to the dynamic nature of resources, and the varying qualities, no two weapons or armor sets were ever the same. Bounty Hunting missions against the people who unlocked Jedi on the server, all types of things. This was back in 2003.

I think we will see WAY more of that this coming decade. If Blizzard is smart, Titan will have a huge sandbox component. I know EQ3 is going full sandbox.

After playing MMO's for a little over a decade. I can honestly say, the best communities are in games that have less than a million subscribers. The larger the community gets, the more disconnected it feels, and the less it becomes an MMO, and the more it becomes a chat room hub with menu's and buttons that teleport you to go do things with strangers you will never see again.
