Right Handed Gamers Are Spoiled

As a righty, I have no problems with moving with the left stick, but aiming (or remapping the movement) with the right stick is disastrous. It's one of the main reasons I prefer pointer controls (e.g. the Wiimote) over duel-stick aiming. So it's not just 'you' ;)

DS was really bad with things that used both the controller and stylus unless they had an alt version where you could move using the ABXY buttons. I remember Castlevania PoR: Sisters Mode was awful.

Righties Check Your Privilege.

I'm left handed.

I play games with the default control scheme.

left stick movement, right stick camera.

or with m/kb, I use my right hand. Left handed mice feel awful to me.

Using the left side of the 3DS while using your right hand for the stylus is impossible.. I remember trying to play COD4 DS... lol what a joke.

But being lefty, I recently just found out I have been at a ridiculous disadvantage in multiplayer games, especially FPS (Mostly Halo). Its just so hard to control the right stick smootly (or mouse) as I can do with my left hand. I wish I was righty :(

Also, playing Counter-Strike is RIDICULOUS while being lefty and using your right hand to aim.. which I have used my whole life. So most of you might say to try and use a different control scheme or use a left handed mouse. but Ive been doing this way my whole life and I just cant change it.

Also, FUCK THE GUITAR HERO WAMMY BAR, no way could I hold the guitar lefty and use the wammy bar.

tl:dr everything is designed for righty's, Im lefty. Makes it hard to aim well. just found out. wish I was righty.

Practice more, get better, stop whining.

You'll have a great advantage if you ever play fighting games on stick.

(I'm left handed, learned guitar right handed because it would be bettr in the long run, THAT struggle was real.)

Right, so..

I'm a righty and I use left stick for aiming, right stick for movement. How does that feel to you, OP?

I always thought that was natural. When analog sticks came around, all sorts of precision movements had to be done with the left (and only) stick: steering cars in Gran Turismo, stealth Mario in M64, aiming in Goldeneye (yellow buttons controlled movement as in a WASD setup), etc.

Thst way, it always felt to me that the natural way to play a dual stick shooter is in southpaw configuration.. Which I still do. Cannot bring myself to use right to aim and left to move.

Try that, OP.

I'm left-handed and I use the mouse on my right-hand. Never had a major issue with the stylus on the DS or 3DS either because on most games you don't require a lot of precision.

I also played Quake World back in the day and entered some tournaments. I had a reasonable skill level so it's not impossible to become more proficient or decent with mouse controls despite being left-handed.

I use the mouse with my left hand, because I can't draw with my right hand. But most text editing shortcuts are at the left of the keyboard, which means I'd have to take my hand off the mouse.

And there are no ergonomic mice for left-handed people, also Logitech's flagship mice are usually (always?) ergonomic.

So many things in daily life are designed for right-handed people, and should something better for left-handed people, right-handed people will often notice right away and start complaining about it (DS stylus placement comes to mind).

Right means correct, while sinister means left :^/

I'm lefty.

I suppose that's why I pick up and am relatively good pretty fast at movement based games. (Platformers, Shmups, KOF)

I picked up arcade stick play really surprisingly fast.

Now the problem is my right hand precision/coordination leaves a bit to be desired for precise timing, for example in fighting games (SF2/4 link combos etc), as for FPS/TPS, I don't play them much now so I don't can.
I was doing allright back in the day on CS and Q3A against friends, on PC with a right handed mouse though,
the problem, I think is I'm much more used to using a mouse with the right hand than moving a camera with a right analog stick.

I'm left handed but never understood issues with controllers. They are what they are and I just adapt I guess like everything else in life. I throw balls with my right hand, use a mouse with my right hand, etc.

I was able to play guitar hero right handed on expert without ever thinking I should try it left handed.

Depends on the genre. Lefty master race here. Fighters and action rpgs are perfect because the right hand is only used for digital input. All of your dexterity and spacial judgement goes into your left hand.

I'm sure if I played shooters and PC games I'd be pissed.

The reason why the buttons are on the right, is because button presses are the aspect requiring precision timing.

Think piano.

Right handed people have it all their way, including with joystick play.

The italic is a bit shitty, but preach on the bolded. Absolute nightmare to learn to play right handed guitar.

However, I don't see how a left hander can complain re: Controllers and M/K. Like using right handed scissors, iif you've done it all your life then how can left handed-ness be used as an excuse

Because your hardware isn't wired that way?

No matter what you are training yourself to do, you are fighting your own hardware.

As you say, guitar.

I cannot play a FPS with a right handed layout, nor a twin stick shooter, much less KIU without a Circle Pad.

Console Fallout 3 was even a lesson in abject misery between reload screens.

It sucks.

Even joysticks are set up for right handed play.

I want to mention that as a right-handed gamer, I cannot play games like PacMan CE with my Xbox 360 controller because it only maps movement to the left stick and there is no option for mapping it to the right stick, where I feel like I could get more precise control. If I held an Atari joystick, I would hold the base with my left hand and control the stick with my right. #RightHandedProblems

But in summary, all players need flexible control options, left or right handed.

Pretty much.

The only time I've ever felt it was an actual issue being left handed was with the Wii.

Trying to aim the stupid pointer with my right hand and move the control stick with my left is just terrible. But when I switch and move the pointer with my left (which feels more natural) it still feels off since I've been controlling movement with the left thumb since the NES days.

Made Skyward Sword a terrible slog to play through

I don't have any problem in gaming. I even use the mouse with my right hand without any problem. I also play guitar as a right handed... You just get used to it.

Just don't ask me to open a can for you. It's always terrible.

Sorry, I was intending to suggest that like scissors, most people will have only used controllers one way and never given an option at first. I could have bought a left handed guitar but didn't as they were more expensive then.

OT: I will say that being left handed is excellent for driving a manual car in the UK. My useful hand controls the gear stick and my useful leg handles the clutch. My crappy right can just chill out

Huh? No it isn't. Vary your mouse speed if you're thinking it's too fast/slow. BOOM, instantly solved.

I ALWAYS SUSPECTED AS MUCH. .\ __/.

Also, to anyone who may doubt that joysticks layouts give the advantage to righties - 1-frame links and FRCs, please believe.

I grew up using joysticks where you held the stick in your right hand and pressed action buttons with your left.

The first time I held a Playstation pad everything was reversed and it felt like it was designed for left handed people.

Took me ages to adapt.

As someone who does not play FPS, but plays platformers and skill games a lot, let me tell you, that you are wrong. Play Super Monkey Ball on GameCube. It's one of the hardest games I know and it controls exclusively using the left thumb. You need great precision and can only do it with your left hand. How spoiled leftys are, they are at an advantage at good games :(. I guess the reason is that the one who designed the current controllers was Shigeru Miyamoto, a lefty. He put the d-pad on the left side and the analogstick on the left side and everyone else just copied that. Nowadays, I'd, as a righty, even have problems, if the main input was changed to the right stick.

Of all games I've played through (not counting unwanted review copies) during the last year, not a single one favours rightys and almost all of demand precision from the left thumb, but please check for yourself, I bolded the ones where I think leftys in principle are at an advantage (the others don't demand dexterity and put noone at an advantage):

I have a friend who's left handed, he's better at games than me, and he uses righty controls. He just adapted.

Blew my mind when I found this out.

I suspect that's not the layout as much as the fact that controls in that context are digital. Precision *movement* is pretty much irrelevant, it's precision *timing* that's the only metric that matters.

I'm left handed and have a left hand Razer Death Adder mouse.

That said I don't switch the buttons so i click/shoot with my middle finger instead of the index finger, also the right mouse button is used for walking forward in fps games, guess i'm the only one using such a weird control scheme.

With Gamepads I would possibly be better at aiming using the left stick but i got so used to the default scheme theres no chance of changing that.

I miss the option to switch the weapon hand in 1st person, shouldn't be too hard to implement and would add a bit of immersion to left handed people too.
