Rihanna is on Michael Jackson's level

Maybe on the radio stations you listen to.
I listen to the radio almost daily, and I'm talking about modern rock and not some retro genre station. I have never ever heard a Rihanna song on the radio stations I listen to.

There is this huge assumption that Pop is mainstream. It's not.

How does one achieve 13 #1s without being mainstream?

I feel like in 30 years a lot of people will know Rihanna songs but very few will know who sang them.

Then they'll google the song they just heard to buy it on iTunes and dive into her whole discography of 40 albums and 50#1 singles, if we're talking about our future dreams and not reality.

It really is weird. I've never seen music so blatantly turn into a "popularity contest" like it is today. Nobody had MJ vs. Madonna bullshit back in the day. You appreciated the entire Top 40 countdown.

The Beatles v the Rolling Stones, Donny Osmond v David Cassidy etc.

There's always been rival fan bases.

I know that the link isn't real, I'm just saying, the idea of artist vs. artist is not new AT ALL.

Oh, it's certainly not an uncommon thing, and has been going on for decades.

Just the way it is now is getting a bit redunkulous.

We need a little breathing room between songs nowadays. Not a new song every couple of weeks. What's the point of buying an album if you're just going to hear the entire thing on the radio within a span of a month, anyway?

Well yeah, once the boy bands came along...

No, I'm talking like, people acting like Pop-GAF except they were being catty about Pearl Jam and Nirvana, and then there was always some fuckwit talking about some also-ran like Mudhoney or something.

Of course. But this insane obsession for NUMBER ONE is definitely new. Kanye, GaGa, Perry, etc. - it's like a racing contest.

It's always been there, it's just that the media was different back then. Nowadays it's all immediate and every company is trying to push their prize pig as the one you should roll with. It's so much easier to just ignore it and listen to Grimes.

But that's exactly what MJ did.

There's been a racing contest during several waves of music. Motown was competitive. Funk was competitive. Disco was all kinds of producers trying to create a hit single. Same with New Wave.

This.

Nonbelievers can continue to seethe as Rihanna's list of hits surpass MJ's. His music isn't that good anyway.

So it has come to this.

Hell even some of the metal bands I like make the top 20s these days. No way would this happen back in the day. Music sales are not what they used to be.

Those bands are no where near as relevant as Rihanna is. They don't have the 1#s, the tour receipts or the neogaf threads. Rihanna is as mainstream as it gets.

lol competition for #1 has always existed.

If internet had existed in its current form the 80s and 90s, you'd see Madonna stans, Paula stans, Cyndi stans, Whitney stans, and Mariah stans going at it every time their fave got a #1/one of the others flopped.

Prince>Madonna>MJ

I can drink to that.

Yeah I guess that's what's changed - the immediacy and instant gratification of it.
I guess my memory is fuzzy as an old man. I was a metalhead so I wasn't an active pop listener.

Joke post.

eh. I'm a joker. No love lost.

That would've been nothing but gifs of Arsenio and Emilio in response, I'm sure.

Isn't Thriller the best selling album of all time at like 60 mill or something? That's enough for me. MJ is the GOAT.

Pop is short for 'popular', FYI.

"Obviously you've mistaken this newsgroup for alt.fan.janet.jackson.
No problem, a recent study indicated that 1 in every 2 people are
illiterate (world wide). I guess we'll just have to get used to it. I
really don't have time to give you a lesson, but there are many places
you can go for help.

Good luck. Don't let people discourage you. You'll find that literacy
will open many new doors for you."

yo damn

You had to be eloquent back then. Now we have sassy gifs.

What are these trying obstacles j has had to overcome?? God, her career
was made by her brother. Everything was handed to her. Real hard to take
advantage of what is already given to you.

And, as far as neither of them taking crap from anyone--Madonna doesn't
take flack from anyone. janet takes the crap and sticks it on her latest
albums. Jeeze, why doesn't she try to get away from jimmy jam and terry
lewis for at least 1 record and write some tunes? OH, wait, I know, she
can't write any. Throb comes to mind here......

Ya. He got 8 grammies for it too. MJ sold so many records that if he had an album that was under 10x platinum or so it was seen as a bit of a failure. He was a monster.

with so much music available easily available from so many outlets, i think that the significance of having a number one hit, or even a string of number ones, has diminshed significantly. For example, MJ was a worldwide household name. Rihanna ain't by any stretch of the imagination.

If this were true, wouldn't there be more modern artists on that list? She's surrounded by Michael Jackson, Madonna, and the Supremes.

People just like her music. It's really that simple.
