I dunno, man. Saw some kids get in schoolyard shoving matches and shit over the top 20 MTV countdown, as late as the early 90s.
Well yeah, once the boy bands came along...

Nobody had MJ vs. Madonna bullshit back in the day.
Maybe on the radio stations you listen to.
I listen to the radio almost daily, and I'm talking about modern rock and not some retro genre station. I have never ever heard a Rihanna song on the radio stations I listen to.
There is this huge assumption that Pop is mainstream. It's not.
What makes this less legitimate than an MJ video?
What?

Not to mention,
The Beatles vs. The Rolling Stones (Beach Boys :crie
Oasis vs. Blur
East Coast vs. West Coast
N*SYNC vs. Backstreet Boys
Mozart vs. Salieri
Thank you for linking that. Now I have even more reasons to hate her. That's literally one of the worst performances I think I've ever seen. I'd rather watch Dead Eyes Britney at the VMAs for a week straight then ever see that again.
I feel like in 30 years a lot of people will know Rihanna songs but very few will know who sang them.
What?

It really is weird. I've never seen music so blatantly turn into a "popularity contest" like it is today. Nobody had MJ vs. Madonna bullshit back in the day. You appreciated the entire Top 40 countdown.
How does one achieve 13 #1s without being mainstream?
Um.... That link.
Also... Hahaha.
As far as 80s Pop Icons go, Prince>Madonna>MJ
I know that the link isn't real, I'm just saying, the idea of artist vs. artist is not new AT ALL.
The Beatles v the Rolling Stones, Donny Osmond v David Cassidy etc.
There's always been rival fan bases.
She's a hit machine. And a hook machine. Also no, these are not Chris Brown jokes.
Well yeah, once the boy bands came along...
Of course. But this insane obsession for NUMBER ONE is definitely new. Kanye, GaGa, Perry, etc. - it's like a racing contest.
Oh, it's certainly not an uncommon thing, and has been going on for decades.
Just the way it is now is getting a bit redunkulous.
We need a little breathing room between songs nowadays. Not a new song every couple of weeks. What's the point of buying an album if you're just going to hear the entire thing on the radio within a span of a month, anyway?

This.
Nonbelievers can continue to seethe as Rihanna's list of hits surpass MJ's. His music isn't that good anyway.

Hell even some of the metal bands I like make the top 20s these days. No way would this happen back in the day. Music sales are not what they used to be.
Prince>Madonna>MJ
Those bands are no where near as relevant as Rihanna is. They don't have the 1#s, the tour reciepts or the neogaf threads. Rihanna is as mainstream as it gets.
No, I'm talking like, people acting like Pop-GAF except they were being catty about Pearl Jam and Nirvana, and then there was always some fuckwit talking about some also-ran like Mudhoney or something.
It's always been there, it's just that the media was different back then. Nowadays it's all immediate and every company is trying to push their prize pig as the one you should roll with. It's so much easier to just ignore it and listen to Grimes.
Joke post.

lol competition for #1 has always existed.
If internet had existed in the 80s and 90s, you'd see Madonna stans, Paula stans, Cyndi stans, Whitney stans, and Mariah stans going at it every time their fave got a #1/one of the others flopped.

You're romanticizing a past that doesn't exist.

didn't they just simply convert into ciara and mariana stans?Paula stans, Cyndi stans,
it's like browsing popgaf on my phone with pictures off

No problem, a recent study indicated that 1 in every 2 people are
illiterate (world wide). I guess we'll just have to get used to it. I
really don't have time to give you a lesson, but there are many places
you can go for help.
Good luck. Don't let people discourage you. You'll find that literacy
will open many new doors for you."
yo damn

I'm sorry, could you list those #1s for me? I can't seem to remember them. All I know is that she keeps putting out a song every week. It's hard to keep up with them all.
Isn't Thriller the best selling album of all time at like 60 mill or something? That's enough for me. MJ is the GOAT.
"In concert, she has the stamina of a lethargic narcoleptic"
I can't stop laughing

with so much music available easily available from so many outlets, i think that the significance of having a number one hit, or even a string of number ones, has diminshed significantly. For example, MJ was a worldwide household name. Rihanna ain't by any stretch of the imagination.
Goddamn.
Is he talking about Madonna? That still applies sometimes.
