Rihanna is on Michael Jackson's level

Considering she's only 25, she's off to a phenominal start, but can we let her do her thing for a few more years at least before we crown her over Michael?

what a pointless and bullshit stat. It says nothing about her talent or her impact

There are many other artists with way less number 1 singles that are and were and will forever remain more infuential than Rhianna is ever likely to be.

ie Queen, almost every metal band that has ever existed list them as a huge part of what and why and even my musically challenged 10 yo knows who they are.

Nirvana - pretty much the poster boys for a whole genre and damn near deified.

MJ - enough said

Prince - possibly the best live musician/act since about 1982

Madonna - love her or hate her she made a lot of difference

Bruce

The Stones

etc

Wait a minute. This is simply based on #1 chart singles and has nothing to do with sales? So Michael sells a bajillion albums, and how many has Rihanna sold?

Ah yes. Theres no reason other people can't run shit the way ri does, they simply choose not to. How astute.

Clock the lies, Esch

Great for Rihanna, but which of her songs will still be played on the radio in 5 to 10 years from now? Michael Jackson's music is timeless.

As far as 80s Pop Icons go, Prince>Madonna>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Milli Vanilli>MJ
FTFY. MJ is trash.

Ratchet RiRi.....

Gaga is done and has been for several years now. This art pop thing is just the last desperate reach.

Beyoncé is married now, that changes sales,

And we need to have a serious MJ discussion on of these days. At the same age (25) homie sold 100 million copies of one album.....one.

...so I guess all of the elite vocalists of the Jazz era were untalented hacks because they didn't write their own music?

Ella Fitzgerald
Billie Holiday
Barbara Streissand
Frank Sinatra

Hell Naw, those untalented try-hards didn't write their own shit. GIVE ME RYAN CABRERA.

That was a different period in time. Don't try to compare Ella to Rhianna. You think Ella sang for the money and fame?

Only Jennifer Lopez has been more successful at fooling the public into believing she has talent. For that, alone, she deserves recognition.

don't think just because I have a lot of money, I'll give you taco flavored kisses honey!

has South Park spoofed Rihanna yet?

....lol wut?

Jennifer Lopez is the very definition of an entertainer. She dances, sings, acts and radiates beauty and poise. And she does all these things good enough to be paid for it. You don't have to like Pop, or music, or happiness, but you cannot deny JLo's ability to put on a goddamn show. She's one of the top Pop divas on the planet for this very reason.

I dare anyone to watch JLo's tribute to Celia Cruz from this year's American Music Awards and tell me that this diva doesn't WORK.

Wow Mariah Carey has a lot more no 1's than I expected. Something that's interesting to me is how many black performers make up this list.

Rihanna - SOS
Rihanna - Umbrella
Rihanna - Take a Bow
Rihanna - Disturbia
Rihanna - Rude Boy
T.I ft Rihanna - Live Your Life
Eminem ft Rihanna - Love the way you lie
Rihanna - Only Girl In the World
Rihanna ft drake - What's my name?
Rihanna - S&M
Rihanna ft Calvin Harris - We Found Love
Rihanna - Diamonds
Eminem ft Rihanna - The Monster

can't believe i recognize every single one of those album arts

all of the above are excellent songs. i have no idea why people can't accept that she is amazing for her age.

That diamond song is the worst song in the last five years.
I don't like Rihanna. In fact, I love trashing that bitch. Ask anyone in PopGAF. I practically get off on it.

"Diamonds" is far from the worst song though, and she does a great job with it. Stop your lies.

Except that if you're going to count Rihanna collabs that aren't from her albums, you should count MJ's songs with the Jackson 5. Which means he has 17 to her 13 (Jackson 5 had 4 #1 singles ["I Want You Back", "ABC", "The Love You Save", and "I'll Be There"]).

Gags will never be MJ because according to her stains, she doesn't write for the charts, so she'll never have that lconic hit

Kii

I hated "Live Your Life" and "Diamonds".

LOVED "We Found Love", "Take A Bow", & "Rude Boy".

I thought "S&M" was just dumb. lol (albeit kinda catchy)

She has got some bad ass producers who don't fuck around with songs that aren't radio friendly. Combine that with how damn cool and hot she is and add in a good voice. Doesn't surprise me.

Is it a NeoGAF thing to make the most inflammatory titles possible lol? Like a third of the posts in here are going off on quality/talent/album comparison tangents when the OP was about #1 singles because of the terrible title.

Also I don't really have a horse in this race, but what is with all of y'all making these future assumptions or saying Rihanna isn't/will never be as iconic as MJ arguments? You got that crystal ball bby?

Er, even assuming that hitting #1 meant the same thing now that it did in the '80s, even pretending we weren't counting every song Rihanna was featured on as hers, how many fucking weeks were MJ's hits number one? How can anyone pretend that the two are comparable saleswise when Thriller alone sold twice as many albums as Rihanna has in her entire career? The thread's premise is ridiculous even from a numbers perspective, we don't even have to get into quality. Go back to PopGAF.

You seem bothered.

Sure, honest pop is hard to find these days.

I personally adore this sort of pop:

Cindy Lauper - True Colors: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPn0KFlbqX8 < sure it's a pop song, but it has a lot of honesty to it. Good beat, good voice and decent lyrics with meaning.

I really like Rihanna, but I find it difficult thinking that 20-30 years from now we're going to be nostalgic'in over songs like hers. A lot of them are about sex, party, energy and such. Nothing wrong with that. good for a workout, good to dance to, good to sing a-long to, but are you really going to get teary eyed 30 years from now when thinking back at this decade and how amazing it was compared to 2043, which just sucks.

Oh god I love reading people arguing about pop music. There's just a level of cattiness there that I don't see anywhere else. It's so much sassier than arguing about videogames.

Are you going to dispute the fact that Rihanna is nowhere near MJ in terms of commercial success? Yes or no? It's kind of relevant in a thread that's entirely about comparing Rihanna and MJ on commercial success.

The OP is about #1 singles and they are tied. You just need to live with the fact that the queen is on the same level as MJ and will soon surpass him. It's inevitable.

Yeah me too. These topics are awesome. You don't even need to care about the artists they are about.

Matching MJ on one mostly irrelevant metric under completely different circumstances in the industry is not exactly "on the same level." It's like saying that Davydenko is better than Nadal because he has won more ATP World Tour Finals and completely ignoring how vastly superior the rest of Nadal's career is. My point when I made that post is that the reason everyone here is skeptical about Rihanna being "on his level" has nothing to do with jealousy or people being too old or whatever and everything to do with Rihanna being much less popular than MJ. She just is, and always will be. My campaign is against misinformation, not Rihanna. I honestly wouldn't have even posted if people left it at the actual facts, which is--hey, Rihanna has a lot of #1 singles--and didn't try to spin that into "as commercially successful as Michael Jackson."

But... There's no misinformation in the OP.

So.

The OP's title is "Rihanna is on MIchael Jackson's level" which is if nothing else inflammatory. And there's certainly plenty of misinformation elsewhere in the thread. I've seen multiple posts declaring Rihanna on par with MJ saleswise as a result of this news, which is nonsense, and absolutely no posts pointing out that that's just blatantly false. I'm sorry that you feel so threatened by this factual information. There's no shame in selling vastly less than Michael Jackson, it's just an absurd comparison to begin with.
