RIM announces BlackBerry OS 10

I just don't understand what developers are supposed to do with it if there's no wifi, can't make calls, and isn't even representative of what BlackBerry 10 is purported to be. I'm half-expecting to hear that it can't execute compiled code or something.

It can only run their apps. I also find it curious that they kept stressing that it is just the playbook os. That means everything could look completely different when it comes out (although I doubt it).

At work we went from selling five different types of Blackberrys to zero in three years. It's pretty crazy just how quickly Blackberry has fallen off the planet.

My last two phones have been Blackberry but I think most of us are pretty dire at this point. I absolutely despise Apple, but even I have to consider getting an iPhone for my next phone. RIM is really going to have to pull something off with the BB10 to keep their customers from jumping ship. I really hope they can, but I feel like they have too much ground to catch up on to become truly competitive on the app front. While I love the functionality of my Blackberry, not having access to many of the tools other phones have flat out sucks.

Jump to Windows Phone 8 when it comes out?

Blackberries are shit, but they still have a decent hold on the enterprise market so if they get this right who knows? I'm reserving my judgement for now but this looks promising. I did say that about the PlayBook prior to release too though. Still RIM are in a better position than Microsoft are with Windows Phone, at least they've got the rioting Londoners segment of the market cornered.

The OS looks really good and the new API's make it easy for for devs.

but that UI... very windows phone influenced and at the same time... reminding myself from using the playbook... doesnt look too "pick up and play"

wild speculation: I think RIM would like a Microsoft bailout if BB10 fails... the new interface seems like a selling point to be bought and easily intergrated rather than "game changer"

and honestly... this industry is going into 3 horse race between apple, google, and ms... if rim bows out.. microsoft can dominate the enterprise market.

PlayBook IS good though. It delivered on it's promises at least in 2.0

It's super portable, and fantastic to use at work (especially if delivering powerpoint presentations in business meetings or group facilitated sessions) ... I'd even go so far as to say there isn't any other tablet as strong in that specific area thanks to the ability to multitask while in presentation mode. The native email client (albeit late) is also amazing. Far better than what I've got on my iPad.

My only qualms with the PlayBook is that the battery life is abit short at about 6 hours ... and it also drains alot quicker even on standby than my iPad.

QNX though (the OS) is great. The gesture system is really intuitive. It took me about 2 minutes to adjust to RIM's gesture system ... once you adjust it's really amazing being able to multitask like a fiend.

You guys seriously think RIM will last one year? Look at how little phone they have sold this quarter.

The only reason RIM is not sold yet is because Microsoft doesn't want to spend that much. The market street jackals are waiting for bad news to shit on RIMM. Once the stock price drop a few more dollars is not up to RIM management to decide their destiny.

This is WebOS 2.0, its a race to the bottom between Nokia and RIM.

RIM will lumber on for a few more years, but the writing is clearly on the wall.

They're going to be bought by somebody. That much is clear. Only a matter of time. What happens after that is up to the ability of the purchaser.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone like Samsung or LG bought them as an alternative to Android and an inroad to enterprise.

I remember when our company switched from BB to iphone and I freaked out at not having a physical querty keypad, flash forward to today and I'm like WTF is RIM thinking just now getting to this point?

Kind of weird they tout hardware keyboards in this commercial:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PC4MNqy4f3I&feature=youtube_gdata_player

And are moving to a virtual keyboard, but I guess they will still have their hardware keyboard phones for sale.

That commercial bugs the shit out of me though, "1000 emails per day" on on your phone? If she responded to each email, and it took 1 minute per reply, that's over 16 hours per day emailing.

To be fair, I know people that get ridiculous amounts of email each day (over a couple hundred) ... not all have to be responded to though.

Whatsapp has replaced BBM. Sorry RIM.
Been using WhatsApp for a couple years now. It's pretty frustrating as a chat client (albeit improving slowly). Still doesn't work as well as BBM, but the ability to chat with people on any smartphone is great. I still use BBM for all BB contacts.

I'll criticize RIM before anyone. I have no problem with that (did so in this thread). But there's criticism... and then there's exaggerated and arrogant posts that are pretty clearly from people who have a masturbatory love for modern smartphones.

Fixed.

If there's one thing that can unite Android, iOS and even WP7 users; it's shitting on RIM.

Honestly, I don't think so. You don't see the same people saying the same things about Windows Phone in the Windows Phone thread. BB7 is pretty bad.
Huh? What happened to context? I'm talking about Kano's posts:

Kano On The Phone said:
Or people who've had to carry a Blackberry. Nothing makes most people anti-RIM faster than using one of their products.
Kano On The Phone said:
I didn't say everyone, I said most people. I don't doubt that some people possess the cognitive dissonance to enjoy using a BlackBerry, but hating a shitty, outdated product has nothing to do with loving Apple.
And yes, he's an Apple fanatic.

Ironically, I was only talking about a single person, but the horde jumps to his defense and turns it into a larger issue. People choose a side and then guard it fanatically. I have no love left for RIM. I'm just witness to some pretty silly posts.

i use iOS but really like what MS has done with WP7. Android is ok, but not my thing. Everything RIM touches instantly turns to shit.

They are a lumbering dinosaur of a company that needs to just be put out of its misery.

I only have a Blackberry because my small-time carrier only has Apple/RIM products offered. I have a really good plan for being in Canada ($40 for 10gb of data, unlimited text/mms, good reception, etc) otherwise I'd head right over to Rogers (or a different carrier with decent phones). Canada is absolute shit for internet and cell phone plans; WAY overpriced and there's no competition between carriers. It's like no one gives a fuck.

I'm thinking of going for an iPhone 5 when my contract expires, but I'd lose my great existing plan and I'd be downgrading to only 1gb of data from my current 10gb. If anything, that's the only reason I'm hoping for BB10 to be good.

I'm such a data hog.

Where is there any connection to him being an Apple fan? He doesn't go into Windows Phone thread and say that using Windows Phone makes people anti-Microsoft or anything. BB7 is pretty bad.

What about your "clockwork" response to dream, who has Android, iOS and Palm devices?

You can't be a data hog when using a blackberry haha. One of the talking sticking points of RIM's stack is it minimizes data usage and there aren't any third party applications either that guzzle data. None of the devices even support WiFi hotspots out of the box. That's a great plan but the carrier only offered it because it knows you won't use it ;)

Kano's and dream's reputations as Apple lover trolls precedes them.

Why do you keep referring to the Windows Phone thread? What does that have to do with the trolling in this thread?

I think they troll BB7 because they really think it is terrible, not because they are Apple lovers. Are they really going around saying the same things about other non-Apple platforms, that using the platform will make you hate the company, or that their current OS is outdated?

I want RIM to go away because their office in RWC is on bottom of where Nintendo sits. Once they're gone, maybe I won't have to climb up the stairs. ;p /lazy

Oh, I also recently switched over to an Android phone and haven't looked back. Felt like I was coming out of the stone age.

This post looks familiar. I think you're having trouble understanding, so I'll elaborate. Kano's fandom has manifested in him aggressively defending Apple and vilifying RIM/BB (even taking snipes at how the devices look). For years. Maybe his love of phone tech blossomed at the height of the BB vs iPhone fan wars (ie, when RIM was actually competitive). I don't know, I don't care.

Keep saying "BB7 is pretty bad", but it doesn't make your point any more salient.

As for dream, that wasn't even about Apple.

I end up watching tons of YouTube videos on my BB (or I use the bridge browser on my Playbook) because I'm almost always out at a friend's house or taking hour long transit rides to school. RIM doesn't compress streaming media so I end up using a fuck-ton of data. Okay maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration but I still use more than a single gig. If I had an iPhone I'd easily go over 3gb because iPhone streams higher quality YouTube videos and has a ton of data sucking apps.

And if I get a BB10 device I'm certainly going to take advantage of those 10 gigs. :P

EDIT: I just hope RIM fixes the app shortage on BB. The only real apps I need now, judging from my playbook, are a decent podcast app (the current one is way too laggy; at least it's better than the non-functioning BB OS one), Netflix, Skype, Twitter (using the mobile site is alright on a Playbook but I'd imagine it'd be a nightmare on a phone), and Tumblr. Games-wise I think they're sort-of catching up (especially after hearing all of those game-related announcements yesterday. I'm personally super excited for Jetpack Joyride on QNX) but I still want Tiny Tower, Draw Something, Temple Run, and MineCraft: PE. The app situation is the only reason I'm even considering an iPhone, and if they can get it up to snuff I won't be going anywhere.

webOS deserved trolling with all its issues. Especially with their hubris about winning the OS Superbowl or whatever.

There's no problem with trolling bad products, even if you're a fan of another product. Are they saying similar things about other non-Apple platforms?

You're making it really difficult for numble to justify retarded posts that he happens to agree with. Prepare for a long, repetitive battle.

And that's what he's been reduced to.

Really? Trolling is acceptable now?

Here's dream in the HP Palm webOS event thread:
Sounds like they're conceding the smartphone market.
That mail client...the virtual keyboard...
The apps HP showcases on their Pre 3 and TouchPad sites kinda says it all about third party support, doesn't it?

I know, I know, apps don't matter.

How dense are you, dude? You said trolling, not criticizing.
I think trolling to get a rise out of people is unacceptable.

I think trolling a company is fine. It's sarcastic criticism. People laugh at stumbling companies all the time on GAF. There are tons of threads on Nokia, Apple, etc. with people making fun of the company at the latest policy, lawsuit, or controversy of the day. The WWDC thread will be full of people saying Apple copied an old feature of BB/webOS/Android/WP, and that iOS is useless because it can't run IRC properly.

I don't think we should go into all these types of threads and accuse people of only saying negative things about a company because they are fans of other products.

Is this another definition you made up yourself? Anyway, it's not kosher on GAF. Try going into a gaming thread and trolling Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Valve etc and defending that as 'sarcastic criticism'

Ok now you're going to have to provide examples of Socreges going into all these types of threads and accusing people. In this particular context it's a charge that fits.

I wish Apple fans could be insightful and not negative when criticizing other products not made by Apple. Is that too hard?

i like the keyboard concept but the only reason i have a blackberry now is because of its physical keyboard. touch doesnt do anything for me

ill probably skip the next few BBs and hopefully they get their ecosystem right in a few years

Buy a Droid 4. Jesus...

It happens all the time on GAF. Take the iPhone 4S reveal for instance. Laughing at no 4G, the drop in the stock price, etc.

People will laugh at Sony pricing, they will talk about Vita/Sony being doomed, etc. They make fun of bullshot trailers and statements made during pressers, messing up on demos, how games are copying other games' game elements. Playstation Home.

Tino actively talks about how he makes investment plans based on the idea that companies like Nokia and RIM will be bought out, and he's not an Apple fan.

So your argument boils down to: it's fine for Apple fans to pick on blackberry because you get a lot of criticizers in the WWDC thread too?

*shrug*

Here's the 4th reply in this thread:
Dear RIM, don't bother us till your company dies. Thanks. Shouldn't be too long now.
That definitely doesn't happen all the time on GAF. Replace RIM with Sony, place it in a gaming thread, and it would not be cool
