RIM announces BlackBerry OS 10

So your argument boils down to: it's fine for Apple fans to pick on blackberry because you get a lot of criticizers in the WWDC thread too?

*shrug*

Here's the 4th reply in this thread:

That definitely doesn't happen all the time on GAF. Replace RIM with Sony, place it in a gaming thread, and it would not be cool

No, my argument boils down to--its part of GAF. Many threads have criticisms similar to Kano and dream's comments about BB7 regarding things like the XMB, Kinect, webOS, the Metro interface, Sony's cloud photo service, Playstation Home etc. How many times do people say that iOS is outdated and stale?

I wasn't even talking about Cheebo, I specifically talked about Kano and dream's comments about Blackberry products and BB7.

In the case of RIM threads it just gets annoying. Idiotic hyperbolic statements bashing the company with NOTHING to back it up. it's like the Nintendo is DOOMED threads that crop up every once in awhile.

I think we all can agree RIM has had trouble over the last few years. With that said they have done a good job with QNX on the PlayBook of which BB10 will be a natural progression of, but refined for mobile phones. It's come late in the game, they are behind no doubt, but I wouldn't count RIM out just yet.

Your post pretty much sums up how I feel. It would be interesting if gaf was around in 1997. I wonder what you guys would have been writing about apple then.

trolling tech companies? sure it does. Sometimes it's even directed at the users unfortunately.

Outrage at it happening may be more selective though.

*shrug* the GAF TOS says Trolling isn't allowed. It doesn't give special dispensation for trolling tech companies or engaging in a tit-for-tat with troll tribes from other tech companies.

Yup. Though I guess it's hard to 'troll' an entity like a company, I mean it's not like RIM is self aware and reading a thread. Aiming shit at users is much worse IMO.

But , out of curiosity, you are very active in tech threads. why the concern now?

Oh, come on Greyface, are you serious? Their tone is a bit harsh, but RIM is in fact in deep trouble. Should everyone monitor their tone at all times now? Let the mods handle the modding.

Here are non-trolling facts: RIM's marketshare has taken a huge nose dive, this new OS is insanely late and still in pre-alpha, and the only light at the end of the tunnel is a possible purchase. Unless a Steve Jobs caliber savior is lurking in Waterloo, this is going to be Palm all over again.

This thread has both comments on the company and comments about the users.

What are you trying to get at?

Facts are fine, Negative comments are fine, harsh tones are whatever. I didn't get into an argument with dream or Kano, let the mods handle that. I do have a problem with Numble saying that trolling is okay.

.

I'm asking why now? Have you never noticed this in all this time?

Directing it at numble is even kind of odd. His points are usually more reasoned, he lays out the logic behind his conclusions and his posts are backed with links. He may be opinionated but he's about as non trolling as these threads get. On this topic he's pretty clearly referring to criticisms of a company that put them in a poor situation.

The fact that even slightest news from Samsung and Apple gets a new thread on Off Topic, (plus any random Android news about OS update gets a new thread), you know at least a third of the posts are useless fanboys noise. I just page down and ignore them.

RIM is losing market share but there are still a lot of positive things going on for them:

1. Try the new Playbook 2.0, it's pretty awesome
2. BlackBerry remains the device of choice for the US Government
3. RIM has a huge presence in India, which we all know is a huge emerging market

When the Vita was announced and released you can be damn sure that people were banned for less than what has been happening in this thread.

1. It's also not selling very well...It also doesn't really do anything special that other tablet haven't done for the longest time. The whole email fiasco guaranteed a still birth.
2. Old people/institutions don't like change...not really surprising. This WILL change at least in this country.
3. India...Well, I guess that's something for them to hang their hat on.

I'm sorry, but there really isn't much going on in here that doesn't occur in a dozen other threads every day on GAF. Nearly any thread about Apple results in comments of a similar tone, although obviously the nature of those comments is a bit different.

RIM is fighting an uphill battle at this point, and everyone knows it. I personally don't have a problem with the company (and never understand when someone says they "hate" a company) but I have real issues with the way they have been managed over the past four or five years. The team in charge had zero vision and rested on their laurels for far too long. They felt like their hold on the smartphone market was unassailable, and now they're trying to play catch-up in an environment that leaves little room for mistakes.

I've said for sometime that BB10 and the new phone look impressive and have a chance to catch on, but I believe that it really is too little, too late. The company may not be "doomed" per se, but in their current form they likely aren't long for this world.

But , out of curiosity, you are very active in tech threads. why the concern now?

Its starting to get overbearing, everywhere really. More and more smartphones and the like are penetrating and the adoption is skyrocketing, and with them, threads and discussions about them on GAF is rising also. It may have been fine when there was a thread or two here and there a few years ago, but now, Sony,HTC,Moto,Apple,Google,Nokia and the like cant make a single move without a thread being made to discuss it.

The trolling probably needs to go, and I'm not leaving myself out of that either, I have personally had more than a few unnecessarily scathing comments about BB and RIM. Probably time that we stop trying to justify any of the trolling with "B..b....but they do it to us!!".

I struggle to grasp how RIM makes it out of this year the way they they plan to. They'll either have to license their shit (but to who?) or sell off their company. I predict the latter. Guess we'll see.

As far as I'm concerned, it isn't the content of this thread that's troubling for RIM. it's the fact that the thread didn't even go up until hours after the reveal event ended. On a relatively tech savvy and geeky forum like Gaf and no one even gave enough of a shit about BB10 to open a thread before the press conference went live, or right after it ended.

talk about irrelevant. that's the hill RIM needs to climb - to get people to give a shit.

But is anyone disagreeing with Kano's assertion that BlackBerry 7 is "shitty and outdated?"

That was really the point. It wasn't trolling, it was taking issue with calling someone a fanboy just for hating a different product. I love Apple, I have a ton of Apple stuff, but the reason I can't stand BlackBerry has nothing to do with Apple and everything to do with the fact that I had to use a BlackBerry for a long time. As someone mentioned, I never post in Android Threads or WM threads because I just don't care, but to dismiss someone as a fanboy for hating what they know to be a bad product is worth correcting.

There isn't some invisible barrier of disagreement just because a product name is in the title of a thread, and yes, there's a huge difference between correcting a false statement and coming into a thread just to say "lol RIM."

People ask me constantly 'what is that?" when then see my playbook. After about 30 seconds their opinion changes from "why?" to "wow", but the fact that no one recognizes the device (or in most cases even know that it exists in the first place) is exactly the problem for RIM. If this phone and OS are amazing, revolutionary even, BB still might die from starvation because no one's buying their products regardless of capabilities. Add in the possibility of iPhone 5 hitting around the same time...

Plus let's face it, the press conference was a giant snooze, who opens with Cisco? RIM can't even create energy at their own conferences- the stock shaved off 10% DURING the event. Check out the crowd response when the BB10 phone was shown- it took almost 3 seconds for anyone to applaud...

People gave a shit about blackberry before when they weren't so damn dated. So why can't they regain their market? BBM is still huge amongst teens and university students, and BB devices are still very popular overseas and in the business world.

Their recent demise is solely related to their inability to catch up to current devices. Their ancient ass OS has been killing them. And their Play Book SHOULD NOT have been released in that state, it was a joke (no email? are you kidding me?). BUT if they could put it together with OS10 and finally have a REAL update (let's face it... OS5 to 7 whatever were barely updates) then I don't see why they couldn't increase their market share.

But putting it together is key - and I don't know if I have enough faith in that company to do that.

The verge has a hands on video.

I like the NFC addition, could lead to a ton of cool features if devs utilize it well. And +1 if they keep the micro SD slot.

Still hoping some of the multitasking advantages the playbook has started are improved and tweaked for phones/smaller screens. In particular I want the message previews in the notification corner back, not sure why OS 2 dropped it. I loved not having to change apps or open messages just to see it was an email I could ignore.

So I just read that RIM stock dipped to an 8 year low today, but I'm not sure if it's true because the newspaper I read it in once published a positive review of the iPhone.

It may have been fine when there was a thread or two here and there...

not really.

Yeah, to be honest even the news gcubed gave about no upgrade path doesn't seem like too big a deal...because I'm hard pressed to really recall very many recent BB models anyway.

It's going to take some massive turnaround to get that kind of mindshare back. I don't know if it's possible, but you never know.

oh please. it’s announcement of their new OS - it’s not just a generic BB thread. Anyone who has a passing interest in the mobile space would chime in here.
Chime in here about what though? What exactly did Liu Kang's comment add to the thread?

BB10 phones undergoing carrier tests: CEO

Research In Motion said on Wednesday it has begun carrier testing of its new line of BlackBerry 10 devices a crucial step ahead of next year’s launch of the make-or-break line of smartphones.

“In the last week BlackBerry 10 achieved lab entry with more than 50 carriers a key step in our preparedness for the launch of BlackBerry 10 in the first quarter of 2013” Chief Executive Thorsten Heins said in a brief statement.

when do we get a new Sidekick OS? I want to get a new phone to download all of my Nickle back albums on to and I have a wad of cash burning a hole in my cargo pants.

It's funny to see how contentious this thread was just 6 months ago. Now, could anyone doubt that this OS and this company are already dead?
I'm not overly sad about the company but it will be sad to see the OS die. It could've had some potential with its multitasking capabilities and QNX roots. I do like the PlayBook OS in spite of all the shortcomings like app shortage and the occasional bug.
