RIP Duke Nukem Forever. 3D Realms to close

A very reliable source with inside knowledge of Duke Nukem Forever developer 3D Realms today told Shacknews that the company has been shut down.
The closure came about as a result of funding issues, our source explained, with the shut down said to affect both 3D Realms and the recently resurrected Apogee name.

Phone calls and e-mails to various 3D Realms veterans have thus far gone unanswered, with publishing partner Take-Two likewise unavailable for comment.

3D Realms was founded in 1987 by Scott Miller and George Broussard. The company had infamously been working on Duke Nukem Forever over the past 13 years.

its gonna be hilarious when 3d realms is revealed to be one guy, and all work he did on duke nukem forever is making the stuff we've seen. Then Broussard reveals himself to be Ashton Kutcher.

Shame if true, I always liked 3dRealms. That monster they half-create may have finally killed them. Maybe Atari could pick up DN4eva and finishes it...

The duke IP being sold would probably result in a faster production of DNF.

I can think of at least a dozen studios that could have put out a competent Duke Nukem FPS sequel in less than 24 months had they simply auctioned off the IP.

DICE
Ubisoft Paris
UbiSoft Montreal
Eurocom
Starbreeze
Rare
Criterion
Free Radical
Insomniac
Neversoft
Splash Damage
Epic

Ridiculous.

Finally!

Now who's gonna buy the brand and assets and actually finish DNF?

Are you people real? If 3DR isn't making it, honestly who gives a fuck? And that means me, I wouldn't give a fuck.

No.

and to think they just finished the intro screen, they were so close !

Now someone like Bungie should pick this up and get away from the Halo series.

I thought 3DRealms was self funding the development of Duke Nukem, with Take Two only acting as the publisher.

People have been saying this for years now and I just don't understand it. I know Duke Nukem was popular but it's hard to swallow that they made enough money of those games to sustain them with nothing to show for it for how many, 13 years now??!! I mean come on, if thats the case then I don't want to hear anymore moaning from any companies about not being able to make enough money. I just don't buy it, they had to be getting money from somewhere and I can't see any company keep handing out the dough for this long on vaporware.

Or it really is just george and a few buddies sitting in a garage blogging once in awhile while watching BSG and pulling a big one on fanboys.

You say this but we can all smell the sticky-sweet desperation sweat of a Duke fan through our monitors, and trust me, you'll buy it.

You'll buy it and you'll like it.

I thought 3DRealms made a buttload off of Max Payne and then from selling their stake in Max Payne. I remember reading that 3DRealms is actually a fairly small company (30-35 people according to wiki), so one sufficiently big hit would be able to keep them afloat for a while.
