RLTTP: Silent Hill 2,3,4, Homecoming

Sure it does. I looked at the games and didn't like what I saw. It's that simple. When I saw a shot of Pyramid head in Homecoming the game got grouped mentally in with the movie as "shit that doesn't understand the significance of the character and the world itself, opting to fall back on reused elements because they don't know how to create a compelling scenario that can stand on it's own." You can argue that all you want, but it doesn't matter. The post-team silent games killed the series' luster for me. I'm just not interested. SH4 was reaching the saturation point for the formula to remain disturbing and unpredictable anyway.
You didn't play them though.

Opinion discarded.

So did anyone know that in SH2, on the hardest difficulty, you get an extra attack with the pipe: a brutal swiping-attack where enemies pretty much can't touch you. My mind exploded when I read this and tried it out!

Shattered Memories has the best told story of all the Silent Hill games. It just plays the worst. Any real SH fan would give it a go and play through till the end, regardless of their "preference". The story is that great.

Silent Hill 2 has a way better narrative than SH:SM. Maybe not way better. But better. It's an incredibly mature, subtle game. SM is good, but I think the shrink bits are kind of heavy handed.

Looks like it's time for another playthrough! :o

I consider Homecoming by far the single worst game I played this year. Or even in the last few years.
This doesn't make me automatically dismiss every single Silent Hill game made by completely different developers though, because - honestly - it would make no sense.

Yeah, I loved it because it made me realize the possibility of a Silent Hill game being terrible. And this scared me even more than the first four games combined.

The story is cool in 2. Kind of predictable and gets a lot of undeserved praise imo but still good.

Haven't finished 3 yet but I'm liking it a lot so far. I would put it below 2 solely for odd enemy placement. Still fuckin scary in certain places and just as unsettling as 2 if not more.

Can't say anything about 4 and Homecoming yet. I do want to play them at some point.

eh give luka a rest. He has a point, there wasn't an awesome "real" SH w/o Team Silent and to make things worse: SH3 is still the best looking SH game.

Make sure you play 1, 2, 3, and Shattered Memories.

The others you can do without unless you really want to play the whole series that badly.

Nah you got it on the first statement.

Shattered Memories does have a very good story though with a fantastic ending. But nothing about it competes with SH2, IMO.

Silent Hill 3 is a pretty great horror game, but I don't really feel like it compares to the first two. It tries too hard to scare you and the story is too straightforward. It does have awesome graphics, though, and it does play better than the preceding games (but not significantly better).

2 is my favorite, but 1 is awesome too - it's kind of clunky, but the graphics have aged really well.

I would recommend playing the games with headphones, if possible. I've only been able to try the first game like that, thanks to the PSP, but I'm sure the second and third would be amazing with headphones.

Definitely. I mentioned binaural audio in SH3 before, but to be specific: The very first storeroom in you come across in the Mall at the beginning, when things are just starting to go awry. As soon as you enter you can hear his stomping/banging sound in another room and it sounds so utterly convincing and spatial that I jumped up and threw my headphones off thinking someone had gotten in my house. There are tons of moments like that. SH3 has some of the most phenomenal sound design ever.

The order of enjoyment:

SH2 >= Shattered Memories > SH1 > SH3 > SH4

Haven't played the others. But I loved SH2 for its characters and amazing storyline and how they put it together. I played Shattered Memories this past summer and my god. The game is so amazing as well. Enjoy! :D

When I had Silent Hill 2 for the PS2 I was pretty young and I remember being scared shitless causing me not to play it. Decided it's time to finally give all of these games a shot, I got pretty far in 2 however I've never touched 3 or 4. Homecoming I beat on 360 but I figure i'll give it another go on PC.

Right now I'm at the hospital in Silent Hill 2, and aside from what I remember what can I expect story wise? I hear SH 3 is praised as the best one, so I'm looking forward to that, is SH4 any good?

Anyways, so far I'm loving SH2 and it's aged really well on the PC, game looks fantastic.

Overall SH2 is the best, but SH3 is pretty darn good too (arguably not as good as SH1 and SH2, but still..). SH4 is.. different. I thought it was OK, even though it has some clunky gameplay mechanics and the terrible inventory system of the old Resident Evil games.

As for the rest, 0rigins is pretty decent, Homecoming is poop and Shattered Memories is a divisive game. For me it's easily the worst Silent Hill game I've ever played (the story was great, but everything else was utter shit).

If you like the series, PLAY Homecoming, you won't regret it, I was reticent to play it and when I did, it was a VERY pleasant surprise.

Homecoming is barely a decent SH game, I think the main problem of the game, is while it tries to be a SH from it roots, you can smell how is just some bastard child.

The narrative in SH2 isn't really that good I felt. I so wanted to get blown away by this game, and the whole opening until you get to the first main area got me hyped to no end (and SH2 has the best soundtrack out of them all, only SH3's comes close to it). Unfortunately what followed was some sort of letdown. It felt like playing through a lot of mini stories instead of a big great one, something that was pulled of masterfully in SH1 in spite of the strange dialogues (which actually made the atmosphere more eerie for some reason).

Didn't play much of Homecoming yet, but it was pretty okay, nice visuals foremost. However they way it throws you into the story immediately confirms that the plot won't be very good overall. It could have been similar to the SH3 opening, only longer but apparently it isn't.

SH3 has the best visuals hands down. Strangely enough I didn't finish it yet, got about to the halfway point. I want to play some other games first and save the hyped ones for later. But up to this point there were some annoying parts but also some truly awesome parts, especially that cutscene in the motel room. Heather is such a great and believable character. The only SH character I like more is Lisa from SH1. Well what do I need to say about the first game. It is an unsurpassed masterpiece. Definitely play this first when you don't know anything about Silent Hill yet. I also have Shattered Memories already but I also want to save this one for later.

SH2's narrative is great because it doesn't really go out of its way to tell you much of anything. So much of the story is found by exploring and seeing how things are laid out rather than anything else. It was during my 2nd playthrough that my great appreciation for SH2 turned to love/admiration

SH3 took me a while to finish too because the story gets to be so stupid, and the gameplay started down a path I really didn't like. Also, starting off with that awful subway/sewer area? Really? Ugh.

Absolutely agreed.

For what it was I kinda enjoyed Homecoming. Not as much as the others of course but it was a worthwhile romp. The boss designs were cool as well.

I really enjoyed all of the Silent Hill games with 3 being my favorite. Too bad it was like 5 hours long on my first play through.

Not much of a SH fan, so I can't say which are best. I played the PSP one (can't remember the name) and thought it was good. I REALLY liked SH4: The Room. Maybe it's time to dig out the old xbox and give it another whirl.
