There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
Today I watched RoboCop for the first time in over a decade; I loved every second of it. I felt like a child again, and yet my adult mind was stimulated by the beautiful social commentary and parody of which I was always aware yet never touched me so deeply up until now. Watching this beautiful film opened my eyes to a lot of what is wrong with today's big production sci-fi/action film making industry, it doesn't pursue art or expression anymore, it only seeks to sell.
If somebody with power is reading this, please abort the remake. Be honest with yourself, you are after the money, or your hands are tied and you must go for the money; compromises will be made, the message will be changed. Do not be delirious, you do not have the talent or means to make RoboCop justice, go rape somebody else's childhood, leave mine alone.

Let me tell you how the remake will go:
  • No fun will be made of the American auto industry or if it is there, the production will blatantly go in bed with some Japanese auto maker like in The Avengers.
  • The character of Lewis will be portrayed by an incredibly good looking but weak female actress, far from the modest looking strong woman of the original. Moreover, Lewis will be over sexualized, she will wear the kinkiest police uniform possible and there will be promo posters focusing on her breasts or legs.
  • The gore will be kept down to a minimum, children will be watching this movie and nobody wants people complaining about the gore. Remember when the ED 209 shoots Mr. Kenney over 30 times and his guts splash all over? In the remake, the ED 209 will launch some sort of rocket with a smoke filled explosion, the viewer is supposed to assume Mr. Kenney died in a horrible way, but they won't show it to you like in Bayformers.
  • A completely out of place hip hop or rock song will be added to the soundtrack. Two birds with one stone, sell a movie and sell a band.
  • RoboCop is fast, a sequel is already in the works and a slow RoboCop doesn't cut it for these adventures. It is better if the viewer gets used to the idea of a fast RoboCop from the beginning.
  • Probably I am repeating myself here, but all of the social commentary will be gone. Viewers go to the theater to watch bigger explosions that don't fit in their home TV sets, why waste time showing them something that will go straight over their heads?
  • The CG will suck.
The list could go on forever, but I already wasted enough time.

Never understood the hate for remakes. I'm pretty sure I won't like it and it'll be a huge waste of time but it doesn't make the original worse.

This was also the case with the original. It was quite subversive in its social commentary, but I reckon 95% of the audience never noticed or cared. They just wanted to see muvafu'ing ROBOT COP!!!!11

Agreed. Can people not watch the original Psycho after the utterly pointless Vince Vaughn version? If the original is preserved then who gives a fuck?

I agree with the general theme and don't particularly want a reboot, but I don't agree that they'd make Lewis a weaker character. Michelle Rodriguez was born to play to the role.

Saying that, I do think a reboot or re-imaging could work. A more series toned movie would compliment the more campy/fun feel of the 80's movie.

Well, I made a call.

The good news is that a pizza is currently on it's way to my house.

The bad news is that the pizza place couldn't help me stop the movie from being made.

I've done all I could, you're on your own from here.

Lewis had class.

Wait. Did you just cal 2 and 3 perfect? they were terrible.
Three is shit. However, 2 is ok for fan-fiction.

To me it comes down to ruining the reputation of the original for people being introduced to the films. I always imagine people a century from now finding articles with people talking about the smash hit The Karate Kid and then tracking down the Jaden Smith version to see what we were all on about.

Fucking this!

I have a 12 year old brother. I better watch the original with him soon before it's too late and he gets introduced to the series with the remake.

I'm willing to bet that most people still don't know it's a modern retelling of the story of Jesus.

Meh, I'd argue if you don't research enough and find out about the original you don't deserve to see them anyway ;)

Lewis had class.

She has class.

...

lol.

On a more serious point, if they were to remake the movie...who else could sell the role of Lewis better than MR?

maybe I'm forgetting a few actresses, but I can't think of anyone who could sell the role and not make it overly sexualized better than MR. She has that sex appeal, but it's countered by her aggressive/rough demeanor/scowl.

Hooray for low standards, I suppose. I can't possibly imagine the remake will be worse than 2 or 3.

I agree when the reboot/remake is being handled by a no talent hack (Len Wiseman and Total Recall) but I'm actually interested because Jose Padilha (Elite Squad 1 + 2) is directing. A lot of my hope for it is based on Padilha getting to make an R rated movie and not some horseshit toned down PG-13 nonsense. It could still suck though.

Im ok with this.
If anything a slow robocop would be silly....if hes the cop of the future why cant he chase down criminals.....ive watched too many episodes of COPS to take a slow robocop seriously.

However, i dont really want a Robocop remake simply because i think we should leave Robocop alone it had its time, remaking then changing practically everything except the fact that his name is Robocop would be pointless.....just make the movie but call it Robert Cop and leave our childhoods alone.

His slowness is countered by his marksmanship.

He is a tank. Tanks aren't silly. His slowness is part of what helped the suspension of disbelief. given that he was a 1 ton robot.

Sorry but I'm not trusting the opinion on Robocop of someone who's only been bothered watching it once in the last 10 years.

They were enjoyable. nuff said.
No they weren't :D Well, second RoberCop passes as good popcorn movie but the third one is just horrible. Fucking PG-13 bull-shit! Don't mind the reboot but I suspect it's going to be awful, very least I hope it's grim and gritty like the first one.

When I was a kid, I owned the betamax tape and I would ride my bike to watch it at my uncle's once per weekend for a couple months. Through my life I must have watched it over a hundred times though. I was reciting all lines today, I caught myself saying "They'll fix you. They fix everything."

Director is the guy who did Elite Squad 1 and 2. Both excellent films action-dramas based in Brazil. Thematically also dealing with stuff that can be applied to Robocop. Personally I very excited to see what José Padilha can do with the material.

And yes, I am a big fan of the original. Not really a fan of 2 and especially not 3.

I just hope Padilha can do what he wants to do. Too many times non-Hollywood directors have made lackluster Hollywood debuts.

Seriously. What? Robocop worked on EVERY level. Robocop 2 is a fucking popcorn flick/fanfic as stated earlier. 3 is just trash.

They already raped the original.

That is true, but I'll keep up my hope until proven otherwise. I think he is pretty talented. For the doubters I would suggest watching his films. I am sure the Americans among you have it on Netflix or something.

While I'm not totally against this, the one thing I'm worried about is they'll either have a shitty new villain or they'll redo Boddicker and get him wrong. Dude had some of the best lines in the movie.
