Rock Band 2
Pros:
It's awesome
Music is awesome
DLC is awesone

Cons:
Nothing

GHWT
Cons:
It sucks

Pros:
Nothing.

This pretty much covers everything, actually.

Yes, the core gameplay, hitting the notes is the same, which means it comes down to everything else to make the decision.

And on that respect, interface, setlist, DLC... HMX has it, Rock Band 2 is superior.

ill give you the straight dope instead of a one sentence answer.

rockband feels like a well-oiled machine. the user interface is awesome, you can create multiple bands, the instruments work incredibly well, you can actually get 100% on vocals, the drums are very responsive, new songs out every week. everything works nicely and you aren't fighting the menus or other things, you just get down to the rockin'

guitar hero is a step below. its not a horrible game but i found myself basically having to hit the drum pads EXACTLY in the middle to get consistent responses. also, while all wireless instruments is nice, i had an issue on the ps3 version where the guitar was reading as drums and vice-versa. so the guy with the guitar could play the drum parts, and when i was on drums i was playing the guitar parts. we had to reset the shit and it took like 20 mins to get it all fixed. maybe this was a ps3 problem or maybe not, but it was there.

to summarize, there isn't one thing i like better about guitar hero. not saying the game is awful but why bother?

Pros:
It's awesome
Music is awesome
DLC is awesone

Cons:
Nothing

GHWT
Cons:
It sucks
Broken singing system
Hideous UI
Ugly character models
Overly loose timing window
Crappy music studio
Product placement out the wazoo
Washed up rockers making guest appearances
Terrible sorting system

Pros:
None.
Added some more cons to GHWT that you forgot.

Rock Band 2:
+better song selection (all up to you of course, but check them both out)
+better character creater
+better streamlined experience (logging in, managing band)
+MUCH better dlc selection
+I like how Rock Band 2 looks a lot more than Guitar Hero (I never go "eww" at RB for instance)
+singing is easier

Guitar Hero:
+I like the guitar a lot more
+I like the way notes are layed out a LOT more
+Better gameplay options, I like being able to quit mid set, to skip a song, to change diffuculty and the counter when you unpause something
+again with note layout, there's an extra strum for bass, there are easier fills in Guitar Hero's drums and the linked notes make insane solos very easy to do
+guitar hero tunes, I've seen some neat things here and there but none of it's a deal breaker

Either is a great choice, I think if you're going to be buying songs, Rock Band is your choice. But it gameplay is first, especially if you're mainly playing Guitar, then I'd say get Guitar Hero. Also, if you're playing with other people take note of the song selections for each and judge your purchase based on that.

IMO RB2 is better in every way except for the guitar instrument. I own them both and only touch WT when my friends are here. But now that the WT drums work on RB2 (PS3 owner) I'll sell GH.

maybe I have a different opinion than the "gaf hivemind" based on the first couple responses I saw...but...

Rock Band is a better game than GH:WT

GH:WT instruments however shit all over the Rock Band ones.

However, I really don't think you can go wrong with either. If you already have instruments though, that you are happy with, I'd probably get Rock Band 2

I still say RB2 Drums > GHWT drums. Better built, better reliability, modability, and the friggin pedal is attached to the base.

GHWT guitar is amazing though.

Wow - everyone seems to agree. I bought RB2 and really enjoy it. Then I picked up GH:WT for a second guitar. I hate the interface and the graphics - everything just seems such lower quality. Playing with a group is also a lot easier in RB2. Plus, the guitar in GH is (imo) no where near as good as the RB2 guitar. In fact, I can barely even play the thing as the buttons feel so squishy and unresponsive. I don't know about the rest of the equipment, but it is safe to say your money is better spent on RB2.

Well, I really like both...
But!! :p

While World Tour has better character customization (though less items than Rock Band 2), special guests playing with you (Ozzy, Wylde, Hendrix, etc..) and GH Tunes is a nice extra.....Rock Band 2 is a more organized 'band' experience; has far more song selections than World Tour...,; while World Tour feels more like Guitar Hero, Drums Hero, Karaeoke Hero...in one package.

Yes, you can choose between overly big chin and stupidly big chin! :P

GHWT as a game itself just annoys me for so many reasons. The timing window for hammer-ons/pull-offs still seems too wide, so I'll miss a note, but end up hitting it anyways, and that'll just fuck me up further.

Then there are just a lot of little things that annoyed me. Playing on hard mode guitar, the charts still vary insanely from "stupid easy" to "why are there this many fucking notes for this song?" None of it felt very consistent to me.

Also the way the game does vocals isn't nearly as good as Rock Band, and that's another aspect of these games that I love, so having it be so tacked on in GHWT was a disappointment.

Also, Rock Band 2 has a far better career mode, going through all of Band World Tour by yourself, instead of the boring "climb the ladder, okay you're done" thing that Guitar Hero still does if you play by yourself.

Rock Band also has the better character creator. You get a lot of sliders for your rocker in Guitar Hero, but very few clothing options, and no matter what you do your character still ends up looking like some horrible freak of nature.

I just don't get how GHWT is still not good considering Neversoft could have just been looking at Rock Band for some time now. I find it amazing that with all that time both companies had between sequels, Neversoft still ended up making a game that on a technical and UI level, still isn't as good as Rock Band 1, much less Rock Band 2.

GH:WT just seems really uninspired.

The big difference for me is in the songs I had never heard prior to playing. Both games have some pretty epic tunes from the likes of AC/DC, Van Halen, Hendrix etc, and I know I'm going to love those songs regardless of the platform.

In Rock Band, I found that 90% of the time, I really enjoyed the songs that I didn't know. In GH:WT, they almost all felt like a chore. On top of it, I think most of the songs are remixed to be longer.

I've owned all the GH and RB games ever since GH1, and I've unlocked everything on all them except of what gets unlocked by beating expert. GH:WT was the first exception to this rule. RB2 on the other hand, I've finished the game (assuming the Rolling Stone cover counts as the end), and I keep going back on a regular basis.

Both, but if you have to choose only one then go with RB2

Guitar Hero = better guitar/single player experience

And I disagree with this (about single player). I've played through both single player and found RB2 to offer the better single player experience as well.

RB2 all the way. 104 songs with the option to buy from a large library of DLC? you can't beat that. In plus we have a great GAF RB community. Family even.

If you're a PS3 owner in Europe: buy GHWT with all instruments, then import RB2 (game only). It's cheaper, you get better instruments plus you get to play both games.

For Guitar-only players that can beat GH games on Expert. What do you prefer? I really disliked the RB1 note charts compared to GH. I like the looser timing. I'd like to hear someone like LakeEarth's opinion.
