Rockstar advises GTA5 players avoid garages until a bug is fixed

Remove the fairing and saddlebags and it looks like a half decent chopper.
Yeah I did that, and it's not a terrible bike, it's just that for missions and things cars are so much more practical. Every time I start off with Franklin I have to drive or cab to his safehouse just to pick up his car and it's annoying.

This game could really use a vehicle delivery service like Saints Row.

Cars parked in those special 4 car garages seem to stay for me. Michael's garage seems good. Franklin's garage always gets stolen from, but sometimes the thief puts the car out in front of the house. Are other people reporting problems with the 4 car garages?

Oh, yeah, for sure it not great for actually getting anywhere, and yeah, a delivery service would be very welcome.

Such a shame this is till happening. For 3 games in a row now I've wanted to get into the owning and modding elements in GTA but haven't due to the lack of security on the saves. I appreciate GTA is probably a really hard game to bug test properly but after San Andeas and IV I would have hoped they put extra care into the garage systems to make sure they save properly. I guess I can only hope they stabilize this quickly otherwise I doubt I will do anything other then swipe cars off the street.

I'm not even sure how it's supposed to work lol.

You have the single car garage at your safe house, and the 4 car garages. Are you meant to return your car each time to one of these spots? Or is it supposed to respawn?

It seems like more of a "collector" feature than a useful method of cars you would actually drive.

I bought a sports car online, put it in my private parking garage in town, and it's currently in both that one, and Micheal's safehouse garage. I wonder which car it would choose to duplicate if I put multiple cars in the big garage.

While I'm here, if Rockstar are reading, please take a look at the Epsilon missions, Chasing the Truth is busted for a bunch of people.

I was thinking one of my cars disappeared.

Oh well, as long as I don't lose the white suit and shades that makes Franklin look like R. Kelly.

A lot of GTA design decisions are like this--realism is often given a higher priority, even at the cost of gameplay. (Ignore the snap-to-target aiming while I make this argument.) Way back in Saints Row 2, Volition made garages that would hold all your custom cars, and I think there was in-game text that basically said "Don't worry about not having enough space! ALL your cars will fit, no problem!" Whereas with GTA, Rockstar have this stubborn requirement that cars take up real space in the world, thus you can only have one car in a parking spot, you lose your previous car if you swap, etc.

Unfortunately, Rockstar changed the system juuuuust enough with GTA V that it's no longer clear to me how it works at all. What determines whether a vehicle I drive gets impounded or just abandoned? How many cars can I fit in a garage? Why did one of my previous cars disappear when I drove a new one into it? (That might be the bug in action, of course.) What happens if I drive a car into the garage besides Franklin's aunt's house? What's with the "special" car Michael has in his garage, and can it ever disappear on you? Maybe all this stuff is in the manual, and I just need to read it, but the game itself doesn't seem all that interested in telling you. So I've mostly treated cars as disposable.

Should have just had car insurance then and call it a day.

Pretty sure it ate a giant truck I bought for Trevor and modded out. Haven't seen it anywhere in a few days, and it's not at the impound :(

It's why I haven't bought any other vehicles.

I've been parking my (non character specific) cars in the multi-car garages I own or the single-car garages attached to my characters house(s)... and not had any trouble. The cars are always there... unless I take them out and don't return them to the garage.

edit: I've got the disc PS3 version.

Has anyone had their cars missing only for them to come back later? I had two of my cars go missing in Franklin's garage but then they returned later in the game. Glad they're getting this fixed.

^^Yes.

My Mariachi car I had parked in Trevor's trailer garage disappeared. And then it returned somehow, like 20 hours later. Does it back up saves to Rockstar's cruddy servers or something?

I'm particularly amused by the irony of a game title "Grand Theft Auto" having a "bug" that has players cars mysteriously disappear.

I'm reaching 10h of gameplay and never used a garage, so I'm good for now.. But they better fix it fast.

Yeah, I've stopped trying to make sense of it, you kind of can't when it's busted. Also makes you not want to bother modding vehicles.

How I think it should work is vehicles that have been put in any garage should always be available from any garage. Regardless of how blown up you've gotten them. Like that Elegy car everyone has under special vehicle for some reason.

Also there should be more garages. Like at least one more for each character to purchase.

I guess I'm one of the few that didn't bother with the garages, or with pimping out rides. Just seemed pointless. The garage shit is annoying too. Sleeping Dogs did it right. Like I've said before, seems Rockstar plays nothing but their own games.

+1 I didn't bother with wasting my money on cars and it paid off.

I really hope they are able to replicate and correct this problem by the time their Oct 1st patch arrives. Because the cert process and cost of patching could cause the delay to be much longer if it doesn't make that patch.

How can a bug like this get past developers in a game called Grand Theft Auto, honestly

Well to be fair, we've never had the ability for your car to just reappear at your house or end up at the impound lot after switching cars in previous games and we didn't slam them then for calling a game Grand Theft Auto and not giving us a way to insure or collect our cars.

In fact, I really miss the "go find these specific cars to steal" parts of games like 3 and VC. That felt the most like "grand theft auto" to me.

I know we get missions to find specific cars, but it wasn't the "hunt for them on your own" style that the earlier 3d games had.

Yep, I haven't spent a penny more on upgrades than I absolutely had to. Shame I'll probably have moved on to another game by the time this is patched unless they act soon.

you guys have been letting them get away with murder!

I played all the gta games and I never used a garage lol

I just use whatever car is available

So wait, it's still safe to upgrade your characters' default cars, right?

I pimped out Franklin's car and haven't had any problems so far...

Oh so my cars did disappear and I wasn't just playing drunk? Cool. Thanks again, Rockstar. Seriously, five years up to the end of the generation, ÂŁ170m and they still let basic stuff like this through QA?

There should just be a way to definitely save cars, but ere's some tips:

  • After modding a vehicle, take it to:
    • a small garage at a safehouse
    • the big character specific garages (each holds four vehicles total, always leave a space for a new car sinceentering the garage resets outside world vehicle placement; if you leave a car outside, enter then come back out to make room for it, it'll be gone)
  • Leave it in there and save
  • Always return it to a garage, then manually save afterward

This works for the character specific cars; in order to keep changes made to them, park them in a garage immediately after modding, then save. You might end up with two of the same vehicle spawning, just keep using the one with mods, leaving it in the safehouse garage, then saving.

I said to be fair only as a counterpoint. It is bullshit that a main garage feature like this had a bug, but when hasn't a game had bugs. I think overall GTAV may be the least buggiest of any of their GTA games out the gate.

I've never had my mods revert back on the player specific vehicles. How do you replicate that bug? Every player main vehicle still has the turbo and other goodies for me and never lost them.

I have yet to do any modding and just discovered the 4-car garages today. I think I've had vehicles from my single-car garages disappear but maybe they were just impounded (haven't tried to get impounded cars back yet).

Hope they fix it soon either way. I'd like to get into the vehicle modding eventually.

Do the default vehicles get impounded? Michael has no cars at his house but sometimes when I switch to him there is a red sedan sitting nearby.

I don't know why:

-the garage can't just be the one at each safe house rather than a seperate location
-the characters can't all share a communal garage, with the exception of the character specific vehicle
-it can't just be a simple list of vehicles instead of a physical space

Because realism, or something. Ignore the special vehicle that functions exactly like that except for the garage location ;)

That red sedan sounds like Amanda's car. It's Michael's default car until he gets his back.
Amanda's car was a convertible, this isn't. Looks like a cheap little Toyota or something. I assume Amanda took her car with her. But the point remains he had a nice 'Vette in the garage that disappeared. ;)

Any word on how long until they can patch this?

I think I'm like the fourth person in this entire thread that doesn't mod their cars. I have yet come across a mission I couldn't pass by just stealing the car literally closest to me. I couldn't care less about customization.

But dude, I guess you don't know: driving feels so much better in a fully pimped out car. You have so much more precision and speed and are able to get from point A to point B much faster and have more fun doing it.

So wait, it's still safe to upgrade your characters' default cars, right?

I pimped out Franklin's car and haven't had any problems so far...

Anyone?

Bullet proof tires are the only way to go. The rest of it you don't need.
