Took a look around and couldn't see this posted, I think this is something GAF will love as much as I do.

ROM CHECK FAIL is an indie game that mangles loads of different games together (usually 3 at once) into a whole new world of awesome. Think Wario Ware, but level-based, with the level itself changing every five seconds. Scenery, enemies, player character, gameplay mechanics are all taken from a variety of games and randomly mixed up with each other, with awesome results.

is there any way of making this run in a bigger window? my desktop is 2048x1536 so it's looking like a thumbnail on my monitor.

Yes, but it's scaling with bilinear filtering.. I don't want that. I want it to scale up nearest neighbour.

See the difference? I do not like forced screen filters.
 
Very clever, but it's a little boring waiting out some of the transformations that were really limiting, like Spy Hunter only being able to fire forward, or the Space Invaders ship being trapped in a small area with no up or down movement.

Edit: Also, sometimes you just die. I started on the last level as Pac-Man against Gauntlet ghost and I literally couldn't move before kicking it.
 
It's fun for a while, but then it gets sort of lame. Plus, the only really useful character is Pac-Man and maybe that flying R-Type ship. Got up to level 17, then uninstalled.

EDIT: Wait, there's an ending? *facepalm*

Really? Then why does it say MAME in the title bar? THEY CONFUSED ME ON PURPOSE!
 
Wow, it's basically taking any videogame memory you may have from the 2D era and smashing it together. So awesome and surprisingly easy to figure out how to control. No idea if i'm making progress though.
 
I heard some Wonderboy in Monster World music on there. Some of the levels cannot be beaten, but it's pretty cool still.

I don't think this would fall under the legal protection of parody, given that it almost entirely consists of snippets of the original copywritten material slapped together. It might make for an interesting test case, but "parody" isn't the same as "sampling" -- that little thing Hip hop and Rap music tend to do but the courts keep slapping down.

Wouldn't matter under the copyright law, although it could possibly alter the amount they'd be forced to pay if found guilty.

I mean, it's a neat idea and all, I'm just saying I doubt it would qualify as parody in its present state. :)
 
Speaking at least for Nintendo, I don't think they care. Years ago, Metroid Prime 2D claimed they got permission from Nintendo for their game, and as I recall, they said Nintendo was fine with "fangame" uses of their material as long as you establish what your game is (that it's the work of a fan and is not affiliated with Nintendo - I'd assume fangames cause a lot of bottlenecks in Nintendo's tech support/help center/tips line/whatever).

Whether you take their word for it or not is up to you, but I know there's a number of game-creation hubs out there that pretty much exclusively rely on ripped game graphics and some of these places have existed for over ten years without legal repercussions. On Sega's end of things, there's a number of sites out there for Sonic fangames that have been often discussed at places like The Sonic Stadium. Sega watches The Sonic Stadium very closely and even provides its staff with preview and review builds of Sonic games, so it's easy to assume that tangentially they are aware of Sonic fangames and simply don't care.

If companies like Nintendo, and Atari, and Namco are going to start cracking down and protecting their copyright regarding game sprites being used in this fashion, they might as well forbid everything related to fan creation - fan art, fanfiction, etc. Most companies do the opposite - they appreciate and even encourage that sort of stuff.

Call it "Sampling", call it "Parody", claim it's "Fair Use" - I don't think these parent companies actually care how you use their 15-year-old game sprites, as long as you don't get arrogant about it.

Oh, I agree that it's unlikely that Nintendo and the like would actually get around to doing much about something like this, especially given the limited market and nature of the work, and I don't think there's any effort being made by the guys making it to "rip off" anyone. I'm merely saying that, technically, it's probably not covered by parody/fair use, and that there would be legal grounds to go after them if the companies chose.

R-Type? N00B! That's Defender!

Also, completed. Totally random. Got Pac-Man vs Gauntlet and cleared 10 levels almost instantly.

A lot of the levels are from Bubble Bobble.

If the game used new images fashioned after the characters/game settings, it might be better off. The game appears to consist entirely of graphics/sprite rips, and that's where the issue might be.
 
This is pretty fun for what it is, a good homage. The fun doesn't last too long tho, 1 or 2 plays and that's it.
