Very close between root beer and Dr Pepper, both of which are finally available in Australia* yay!

*at $3 a can, but that's cool, limits my soft drink intake to a can a week.

this is the god tier of root beer, cause its' actually brewed. whatever that means

Virgil's Root Beer contains cane sugar and a number of natural spices, including anise, licorice, vanilla, cinnamon, clove, sweet birch, molasses, nutmeg, pimento berry oil (allspice), balsam oil, cassia oil and citric acid.

and it comes in a mother fucking keg!

It funny when people try to trash on root beer, because it has variety like regular beer. You can't just have an A&W and think you know what root beer is. The real stuff is brewed in so many different ways by independents.

This thread made me go and buy a root beer. Thanks, OP.

(I really wish there were more caffeine-free soda choices that weren't citrus flavored.)

High Fucking Five! This guy knows his stuff! Virgil's has hands down the best root beer I've ever tired. The way it tastes when chilled is indescribable. The only thing brand i've tried that comes close to virgil's is Blue moon.

I have yet to try sarsparilla. How different is it from typical (i.e. A&W, Barqs) root beer?

I just realized that even though I love root beer (Coke Classic is #2) I haven't really ever had anything outside of A&W or Barqs. I need recommendations!

Most sarsparillas have heavier wintergreen flavoring, which I really don't like at all. But really there is no consistent difference, it's just an issue of nomenclature. Worth trying though.

King of soft drinks?

If you like the taste of liquid bubble gum, sure. Too sweet for human tongues.

I actually enjoy a coke that's like, 10% root beer added in. It's too potent a flavour on its own. Alone, it's like, the Wasabi of drinks; too offensive.

This might be an interesting story for some people:

One hot summer's day, I was hanging at a friends house
getting high
and he had nothing to drink but root beer. I absolutely hated root beer but I was really, really thirsty so what else could I do? I cracked open the bottle and lo and behold, it tasted like the greatest thing ever. Now I love root beer.

It's tasty enough, but I try to stick to caffeinated sodas. I at least want some return if I'm going to drink something so bad for me.
