Rory McIlroy PGA Tour up for download on EA Access

To each his own, and the game clearly has a few issues... but those graphics are most certainly not one of them.

I think I get what he's talking about though. There's a bit of a weird effect when there is a lot of tall grass and the camera is moving. It's usually easily ignored.

I'm guessing since they are reviewing it based on the EA Access version and not a pre-release code that would require them to adhere to such an embargo.

Yep, the 10 hours with EA Access. The game is publicly available so anyone would be free to talk about their time with that.

I don't have time to watch the review but the only thing I want to know is if the multiplayer is turn based because that's the best.

You play with people at the same time. They actually render your opponents on the course, and you have a time limit to complete each hole. It sounds decent in theory but in practice the online is a miserable experience - with golfers popping in suddenly and/or vanishing off screen, it's just a distraction. End up seeing stuff like this: http://gfycat.com/JampackedAccurateDorado, which isn't helpful when you're trying to line up a put for instance. It was better just seeing shot arcs. Plus there's no crowd sounds or commentary.

We can easily nitpick grass, but to call this game's Frostbite powered golf (with no load times mind you) "hideous" is more than a bit of a stretch.

I think some HD video side by side of Tiger 12/13 (x360) vs Rory (ps4) tomorrow will put this debate to rest. (or at least make it easier to quantify the upgrade in visuals) It should be night and day obvious(SHOULD... new engine, new hardware, (some) new models)

Anyone want to be nice and volunteer?

Yea all the blades of grass are individually rendered and when turning you see some shimmering on them sometimes but in general the animations, textures and lighting all look really good. Would look even better if they added some overcast, cloudy and or rain imo. As you would see more details instead of brightness everywhere.

Rumor is that Tiburon will be adding weather in via DLC, but again, we're all waiting for confirmation.

Patel said that once the game's released, he'll be able to talk more about their plans. While I'm hopeful... I'm not holding my breath.

Sweet. Hope it happens

Wonder if it will be free stuff or grossly overpriced. I really like the trial, but at the same time im guessing this will be vaulted by years end.

Is that a glitch as well that it shows all those tall weeds growing on the side of the green?

"Weather systems are also a big focus so that courses can take on a very different aspect, and challenge, as the clouds roll in."

That was from mid-June previews...so what happened?

The game isn't finished. Not enough courses, not enough features. This is just like their awful NHL release, another of their sports franchises that had a year off for the next-gen transition and still came in short of even the most reasonable expectations.

It's not going to be a yearly release anymore so content is going to be consistently added apparently. Some of it free but what it is has not been confirmed yet.

I think a lot of people, myself included, hoped that this game could be really gorgeous on the new consoles, but the low detail on the trees and their shadows gives a bad first impression and the blatant pop-in/out while the camera follows the ball is distracting. The character models and grass look nice enough, and I appreciate the options to accommodate for different play styles, but one of my favorite things about playing golf is taking in the beautiful landscaping and scenery around the course, and this game appears to fail in simulating this experience. Maybe there is a day one patch on the way that will optimize some of the pop-in, but I'm not getting my hopes up. I could give the EA Access demo a try to see if it looks a bit better than the videos appear, or just wait until it's deeply discounted to buy it.

I hate to sound like a graphics-first kind of person, and usually I'm not terribly critical about visuals in games, but I really want a pretty looking golf game I can play at home and I was hoping that this game would scratch that itch.

So here is what we know...

1) downloadable courses

Here is what we don't know.

1) downloadable characters (male)
2) downloadable characters (female)
3) weather system DLC
4) game modes DLC
5) equipment DLC

Answers to these would go a long way.

I ended up preordering, PS4. I have $47.99 with best buys gamers club. I hate giving them money without any concrete content promises, but I wanted the extra course and miss my EA golf.

On another note, preordering online was a massive pain and I couldn't find a single store in 200 miles that would let me preorder. I got on the chat and the customer service said that the Houston area's preorder allotment was gone. Not sure if that means they didn't buy a lot of them, or if people are all over this

You'd think they'd try to get in front of the bad reviews and get some positive vibe going.

I've only had this happen once with Best Buy and it was earlier this year with Dying Light. Decided to order last minute and it wasn't available anywhere. For some reason Best Buy's online pre-order stock seems to be different than the stock if you were to have walked in store and placed a pre-order that way.

Yea that makes sense. That's why I tried to chat with them, but they probably had no clue what was up.

Downloading this now. Absolutely loved the Tiger series so hoping this is more of the same but better. Excited to see how it looks,on next gen. Getting a PS4 Wednesday so will need some games for that but the Access discount might be hard to pass up.

The nice setting is a huge part of why I go out and play golf on weekends, and it's a huge part of a golf game. Nothing at all odd about wanting your golf game to be pretty. It's known as 'A good walk spoiled' for a reason.

And just to further muddy the water and keep us guessing, they actually fixed NHL 15 post release.

Well I wouldn't go that far. They fixed a lot of glaring issues like no post-game three star selection or no coaching feedback - but they still have a lot of things missing from past games. This year MIGHT get them back where they were, but that still means two years of a franchise that stagnated instead of moving forward.

As well as adding in a customizable playoffs mode, coach feedback, online team play, and a host of other content lacking from the original release. While not perfect, NHL 15 did become a significantly better game in the months that followed release.

I received my copy from Amazon a day early and the menu only has two options. Play round and prologue. I thought I needed to complete the prologue to open up the game, but still nothing. Anyone else having this issue?

Has it fully installed? It might be still pulling from the disc.

Says its done. Maybe I'll try deleting and install again.

It's "done" enough to the point you can play a bit of the game while the rest continues to be installed. Hit "Options" when over the game on the menu, then properties (I think) and see how much HD space it's taking up. If it's a surprisingly small number, it's not done installing.

I did check that. I'm playing on a PS4 and it typically shows the progress when installing, but it just shows the total size which is 29-ish gb. I tried re-installing and I have the same issue. It does seem to install far too quickly for 30gb. May just try to return with Amazon since it seems to be broken on release.

I have the PS4 version and am able to access all options just fine, so in the most general of senses, it's not broken. You absolutely positive it's fully installed? You check to see if there are any updates you need to download?

An update downloaded and installed. I'll have to try some more tomorrow. Maybe I'm running low on disk space, but you think it would give me some sort of error if that was the case.

Ugh, golf in VR could be amazing especially with a good motion controller

Anyone that preordered notice any difference on PS4 in terms of performance?

I played the EA Access version last week on Xbox One. I just played three rounds of the PS4 version (digitally pre-ordered). Same shitty performance on PS4 that I saw on Xbox One. Same shitty graphics. Same stupidly fucked up 3 button swing style delay. Same lack of modes/courses/extras despite having an extra year of development time compared to the last version of the game on PS3/360. Same disappointment.

Sorry to be a bummer, but I've been addicted to this series since the PS2 days. This game is disappointing as hell. It reminds me of how barebones the first next gen NHL game was. But worse than just being barebones, it also performs horribly and looks terrible. Just ugly as sin. Every cutscene suffers huge framerate issues. Tons of graphical pop-in, even in the opening cinematic. Control-wise, there's a weird delay on the 3 button method that isn't at all related to display delay. It's built into the control method. So basically you have to train your mind to hit the button a split second sooner than you'd think you'd have to. It's so stupid.

I regret pre-ordering this. And I hate Sony for not letting us cancel pre-orders before games come out. Thanks to them denying me a refund, I won't be pre-ordering from them digitally ever again. Lesson learned.

Just realized that they do have long sleeves jackets in the game so there's a little hope. Not exactly rain gear but a few look waterproof material

I miss the good old days of hitting triangle and the camera traveling across the course to reach your ball's potential landing zone. Now it just appears there. It's so clunky. And who thought it was a good idea to have one button to zoom to the landing area and another completely different button to bring you back? Why not just use the same button? So dumb.

And the commentary is beyond awful. In one round I heard the announcer say that his personal hero is Tom Weiskopf 4 times.

The word is that the PS4 version is 180p higher resolution than the XB1 version. What hasn't been confirmed is whether it's 720p Vs 900p, or 900p Vs. 1080p. Can you gauge that now that you've seen them both?

I didn't preorder because the time I spent with the XB1 version showed me the game doesn't have anywhere near the level of feel I crave in the swing interface. It's a "fill the power circle and flick the stick forward" twitch-fest, even in Tour difficulty mode. A lot was made of the tempo dependent swing interface; when in practice it's much closer to a twitch dependent interface... (sigh)

Pretty telling review there, and the reviewer doesn't really address my biggest problem with the game... it's lack of feel!

I can't decide whether or not to cancel my preorder. I've been dying for a golf game, but I guess I could wait for Madden and just get into that. Some Tiger Woods golf with a group of friends is difficult to beat.

Still can't believe the development team hasn't made any statement at all.

I'm not the right person to ask about resolution. I don't see much of a difference between 900 and 1080p. Both versions of the game don't look very sharp at all though. The major issue is that the graphics themselves are bland. There's nothing about the game that makes me think it shouldn't easily be 1080p on either console.

For people claiming I've been too harsh on the game, that 5.5 from IGN should tell you something. This game is an insult to those of us that have been fans of the series for many years. Not just the lack of content, but also the lack of heart that appears to have gone into this. It's as if the developers, despite being given an extra year, didn't give two shits about the game they were making.

Meh, they also gave one of the best games of this gen, Driveclub, a poor score and that got even better with additional content so I'm in for this. Plus, online with friends this surely cannot be anything but fun, and I'll be playing it predominantly with friends so!

Driveclub was scored appropriately. It's a pretty looking bore of a game. Rory doesn't even have that going for him. This game is downright fugly.

I hope to god the most recent Tiger Woods game gets backwards compatibility on the Xbox One. It's light years better than this turd.

I personally think 5.5 is a bit harsh. I am actually really enjoying the golf gameplay through the 5 tournaments I have played, but the game is missing features. Create a golfer is very bare bones and there needs to be more courses added to the game. The commentary is OK, but more variety would have been nice. At least the commentary is tolerable compared to that in TGC.

That being said I would probably score the game as 7.5 as it stands now with the ability to score higher if EA keeps to their word of adding free updates.
