LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – The director's cut of "Watchmen," featuring an additional 25 minutes of footage and
the death of a supporting character,
will receive a limited theatrical rollout during the weekend ahead of its July 21 home-video release.

The superhero saga, which was considered to be a bit of a box office disappointment during its first go-round in March, will screen in Los Angeles, New York, Minneapolis and Dallas.

The rollout will culminate with a special screening July 25 at the Comic-Con International confab in San Diego, taking advantage of a Blu-ray Disc feature that will allow any viewer in North America to watch the movie at the same time as the audience at Comic-Con, see and hear director Zack Snyder comment on the movie, and even ask questions. The screening will then be archived and will be able to be accessed for future viewings.

"Comic-Con, it isn't just comic book fanatics, it's cinephiles as well. It'll be cool to discuss what people are thinking," Snyder said at a "Watchmen" press day, held Wednesday at Warner Bros., where the news was unveiled.

The day was designed to showcase a bonus Blu-ray feature called Maximum Movie Mode as well as features to be seen in Snyder's Blu-ray release of "300: The Complete Experience."

The theatrical rerelease is unusual, given that the costly movie grossed just $107.5 million domestically. Critics were also divided about the movie, with some saying it was too slavish to the graphic novel's many devotees.

Snyder, however, stood by it. "I'm proud of the movie. It does everything I wanted it to," he said.

I had no idea standalone blu-ray players were powerful enough to stream several HD videos at once with overlay effects and shit.

Or is this thing just a seperate "file" from the movie? Pretty cool anyway.

day1 on the bluray, i liked the theatrical cut when i saw it, i'm sure the director's cut will be a lot more fleshed out, greatly looking forward to it

I can probably google the question, but does the blu-ray include Tales of the Black Freighter?

/edit: oh the previous page had the answer. nvm. Still sad to hear there's gonna be another release later this year with Tales integrated. I might just get that seperately if it gets cheaper.

This is not the über-version yet right?

Didn't they say that there was a 1 hour longer version which would come to dvd ? 25+ minutes is good but i want all. GIMME !

Found it.
And the eventual Ultimate Edition DVD version of the movie (think Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings extended editions on crack) will no doubt be over four and a half plus hours in length.

Bu bu but the ending was different! No Alan Moore! Too long! Too short! And I´m not talking about his dick, even though I looked at it all the time!!!

:lol :lol :lol

I love the GAF haters, but I´m not sure I´ll buy the non-super-all-included version.

So who has actually seen the Tales of the Black Freighter stuff? Is it good? I haven't heard any impressions at all.
The Blu Ray is still $30, a ridiculous price to pay considering the running time of the content...so I haven't seen it yet.

you can get it for free if you buy the Watchmen Blu-ray from WB's online store.

I saw on CAG, dont' know if it's still going or not, but you can order Watchmen Director's Cut and the Tales of the Black Freighter for $28 from the Warner Bros Store. You have to put in a code, WATCH3. As I said, I don't know if this still works or not.

Oh, and I heard the final cut is going to be out some time before Christmas, but it's going to be a bare bones release. It'll just be the movie on the disc and some commentary. Snyder mentioned it in an interview he did over at ComingSoon.net

Having to buy something else to get it isn't what I call "free." :D

Particularly when said other item is markedly inferior to not one, but TWO future releases imo.

God damn, I cannot wait for the Watchmen Blu-Ray. I just put Tales of the Freighter Blu-Ray on my Netflix too. Watchmen mania approaching for July!

It's almost insane how everyone completely forgot about this movie. Reminds me of 300. :lol
Everyone forgot about this movie and yet it's the number one Blu-ray preorder at Amazon and has been for quite some time.

This does not compute. And how exactly did everyone completely forget about 300?

Probably because NeoGaf isn't taking this under its wing like they usually do with some commercial blockbusters.

Anyway, the extended cut is... uh... out there to be watched. By men. Anyone seen it yet? I'm holding out for my Blu-Ray preorder.

Has anyone actually seen Tales of the Black Freighter? Is it worth it?

It worked really well in the comic, but I feel like the transition between animation and live action would be too jarring in the combined super mega ultimate version of the film for the integration to work. I'll probably just get this version of the Bluray and pass on the Black Freighter edition.

I thought it was pretty good. All hand drawn animation, each frame done manually. Voice over is by Gerard Butler, and the music and audio is by the same people who did the movie. It's only 15-20 minutes, but it works well.

The Black Freighter stuff was OK I thought, but the Under the Hood documentary was more than worth the price of admission I thought, it was brilliant. Loads of new old footage and presented in a style that was really cohesive with the movie, I was wowed by it myself. On the black freighter DVD there's also a pretty interesting making of doc as well. A neat package all together I thought. Looking forward to the DVD of Watchmen proper this month though, can't wait to see it again!

Changes in the Directors Cut:

I was luckily enough to get to see the 3 hour director's cut of Watchmen yesterday and I want to give you short review with a list of changes I noticed.

First thing is first not all the changes are directly from the comic. A few extensions of scenes are entirely made up. A few of the new scenes are just same situation and location but different dialouge (good though and true to the spirit of the scene from the comic book and to the characters themselves.) Most of the changes bring it dead on with comic. Added monolouge and dialouge here and there.

I would rate the theatrical cut an 8 and this 3hr cut a 10

Here's a list of changes that I noticed:

1. At the end of Rorschach's search of the comedian's apartment. Two cops enter, he knocks one of the cops out and jumps out the window as the other cop is firing his gun at him.

2. Rorschach has more comic book monolouge, throughout the movie. Though I'm only going to mention it once. (nothing but the good stuff too.)

3. Dan and Holis's visit is extended by seeing roschrach on TV. Hollis comments "It didn't stop him." (refering to the keane act.)

4. More scenes from the comic such as:

-- Before they walk into the alley we are introduced to the scene by the news vendor talking to Seymour delivering his papers.

-- When Jon says "leave me alone" everyone in the room disappears. Leaving him alone.

-- Cut back to Laurie and Dan at the end of the fight.

-- Laurie decides to go back to the military base and Dan meets with Hollis; they watch TV and learn of Jon's departure. Dan says laurie doesn't know. Cut to Jon on Mars and his story.

--The only major difference in this scene that I can remember is Jon talks about his symbol, slightly varied from the comic he says,"The boys in marketing wanted me to have a symbol. I said if I should have a symbol it shall be one I respect."

--Next scene is Laurie getting interrogated at the military base. They discover that Jon is on Mars and Laurie escapes and decides to go stay with Dan.

5. Rorschach has more dialogue from the comic with Dr. Malcom. Also in his story of the girl, the murder is shown as in the comic - walking outside, asking his dogs to bark, when they don't he draws his gun and enters the building.

6. Rorschach and Laurie argue on the rooftop of the jail; Rorschach more or less calls Laurie a whore. They escape.

7. Jon and Laurie begin their conversation as they did in the comic: "You're going to tell me you have been having an affair with Dan".

8. A few more interesting changes, happen.

9. Oh and Hollis talks on the phone with Sally, only to be interrupted by knocks at the door. He has a great montage death scene. They also explain why the knot heads go there at an earlier point.

10. In the bar, Dan sees the news of Hollis's death by knot heads and beats up one in the bar (knocks out like all of his front teeth. pretty brutal).

Whilst that is all good, I was really hoping we'd get to see
The bodies strewn throughout the streets of New York after the blast
. If I felt any one thing was missing from the film, it was that. Well, that and 'I did the right thing...in the end?'

That isn't exactly a lot of details on what's new. Those things could still be in.

Is it acceptable on GAF to discuss media that is pretty much only available right now through piracy? Because I hear that the director's cut has hit the Internet.

It is as bad as stealing a TV, robbing a bike or mugging the elderly, it says so every time I watch a DVD. I just don't want to get into any trouble.

You might as well steal food from my table, goddamnit.

I apologize to all movie studio executive gaffers and Gary Whitta.

Edit : For reference I buy my movies and pay for my movie seats. It's just not out until September here, I'll pick it up then.

Don't have to wait to long if you know what I mean :D
Meh, it's too long of a movie, so if I watched it now I wouldn't be in the mood to watch it again in glorious 1080p when I get the Blu-ray copy in 2 weeks. I'll wait.

So they still didn't fix Ozy's dialoug at the end "I DID IT"

and they didn't reinsert Ozy speaking with Dr. M at the end :(

Do we know if they added Rorshach's fuck awesome speech after he killed the guy with the dogs?

I can say that the Director's Cut was a lot more enjoyable than the theatrical cut. Everything flowed so much better, characters were more fleshed out, the humor made more sense. Just about better in almost every aspect.

I wanted my first Watchmen viewing to be the Director's Cut so I cannot draw comparisons with the theatrical cut, all I can say is that it's the best movie I've seen this year. It really feels like watching the comic and even though it cannot have the depth of the source, it manages to retain its essence.
The visuals were stunning, the universe and the threat convincing, great job on Nixon and Kissinger especially. I truly enjoyed it and will rewatch it with friends.

2 things I didn't like : Ozy who should be more handsome, buff and have better diction, and the very end.

Nixon is portrayed in a comical way, with his ridiculous makeup and whatnot. To me, it's obviously done on purpose, as things meant to look real look really good. I think a lot of the humor in this film went above most peoples head, as they expected something really dark and serious. Watchmen is quite funny at times, and the film gets that across in a fresh way, imo.
