RPG Maker Games: has there ever been a good one?

Ah, yes, A Blurred Line. Another one I liked quite a bit.

Ugh I need to stop reading this thread or I might start downloading some of these games again.

When I was looking through a lot of RPG Maker games years ago, A Blurred Line was the only one I liked enough to play through. It's not a complete game though.

I will immediately play Space Funeral.

But A Blurred Line is incredibly awful. Graphics either default or ripped from other games, and any original content is laughable. Not interesting in the least, not fun to play...just don't see what anyone ever saw in it at all.

EDIT: Watching a video...first five seconds, stolen the music from Escape From New York in MIDI form, and a character uses the word "cuz." Ugh.

Hehe. Yeah, I had a much higher tolerance for bullshit at that time.

came to post Space Funeral, glad someone took care of that.

Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden

Best there is.

Ash on iphone is also good.

Charles Barkley Shut Up and Jam was made in GameMaker.

Most unique visual one was probably this

Rainblood I: Town of Death

visuals remind me of jackie chan adventures for some reason. Combat is also pretty visually impressive for an rpg maker game.

Doesn't hurt that you are a fucking badass.

One of the best ones I've played is Beautiful Escape, in which you play a serial killer who lures people into his basement in order to torture and murder them and post the resulting videos online.

I was amazed at how affected I was by this game. The writing is quite good, and it does an excellent job of making you feel empathy for the victims and genuine disgust at the behaviour of the character you play as.
At times I legitimately didn't want to play the game because I found it too unsettling.

There's a bit of a spoilerific write up on it over at RPS, which I'd say you should avoid before you play the game but definitely read it after or if you don't plan on playing it.

Really one of the most unique and disturbing games I've ever played.

A lot of RM games are total drivel. There are some gems, though. Unfortunately the ones with most promise end up dying and unfinished. There always seems to be some kind of critical flaw with them that prevents them from reaching greatness.

Aveyond is really bad and generic animu.
Tiamat Sacrament is quite good but with ho-hum graphics.

Probably one of my favorites that I've played is Rise of the Third Power. It's not finished, which is a shame. But it's pretty great for the few hours it lasts (maybe like, 6? Can't remember).

This man knows what he's talking about, jus' sayin'.

Last Scenario and Exit Fate, both already mentioned, are my favorites. LS is more original, EF is Suikoden II but prettier than its forebear. They play differently but feel similar. They can be downloaded here: http://site.scfworks.com/

Americana Dawn: The Long Goodbye is a beautiful game being made by a friend of mine; it uses RM* to the best of its capabilities and is an RPG about revolutionary war-era America and is not afraid to have a heart-rending gay romance. Check out its progress, updated almost daily, here: http://thelonggoodbye.bitbonton.com/

As a guy who used to be a big name in the RM* world and still uses it, I can honestly say that 1) most of the games (like, more than 99%) are worthless and that 2) the community is complete and utter shit. Seriously, one of my best personal decisions was leaving the RM* community to its circle-jerking idiocy.

RPGMaker VX is a powerful tool usually used for evil.

If someone hasn't suggested them yet, The Way is an awesome, uh, hextology. Complete series and lots of interesting gameplay mechanics, though I doubt the 3D art has aged very well. Then again, whose does?

I've never finished Yume Nikki but I'm extremely compelled by it. I think it present an attempt at the melancholy minimalism so prevalent in art/indie games in a way that's just more uncompromising and...madder, I guess, than other games. It's an incredible argument for 'ambient' gameplay, and I've thought a lot about what else could be done with that. If I had any talent I would try to make a game like that; not in RPG Maker as that's really limiting, but something in the vein of Yume Nikki. Ambient Surrealist Horror.

I used to dabble in the RM community a long time ago, nearly ten or so years going back I think hah. The folks over at GamingGroundZero had some fantastic, yet unfinished projects going, but I pretty much left that years ago to have a social life, I guess. But thinking back it makes me kind of nostalgic....

Would love to see some of the old projects finished. Good times.

Space Funeral reminds me of 70's acid-animation.

One of these days I'll make the greatest RPG Maker
on Playstation
game ever.

Like fan translations, RM games are one of those things i check up on every couple months. Thanks for reminding me. These are one reason i dont understand why people pirate new games. If you have an access to a computer, there are so many free games to play its hard to even figure out where to begin.

Seriously, this game fucking kills. You're thrust into a glitched, messed up RPG world. Think Earthbound meets 24th century dada revival. Horror, surrealism, dadaist hell, and an ending that makes more sense than anything.
Watching some let's play video on youtube, the music is amazing. I must play this game!

Space Funeral is basically just a game made to shove as much random shit in as possible. It makes for a really bad game.
I would agree with you if it was longer. It's the perfect length for what it is.

Like everyone else apparently, I watched a "Let's Play" video of Space Funeral. The music is sweet. Need to play the game when I have time.

Just as an FYI, if people hadn't checked/noticed yet: If you download Space Funeral, all the music is in MP3 format in the Music folder. Imagine that! Yippie!

Just finished Space Funeral. Truly one of the best games I have played recently.

Is there any point to Dracula? Or is he just as random as the rest of the game?

It's makes Earthbound look normal.

Now that I have finished the game I can completely get behind this statement.

maaaan I freakin loved this game.

if only modern JRPGs took example by how this game does everything right,

then they would suck less.

way back, their was zzt maker, I believe it was public domain, but it was good along with the zzt games.

Yeah, my first ever website was actually a ZZT site (the largest archive on the internet at that time). I made a few games for it then moved into MegaZeux, and made one game (a joke game) for RPG Maker 2000. Got like a quarter of the way through another RPG Maker game that was actually shaping up to be quite decent, but didn't have the motivation to continue.

Did you know that Tim Sweeney of Epic (and Unreal engine) fame made ZZT?

Space Funeral is totally worth a playthrough but it gets by 100% on its charm and quirkyness. The gameplay itself is rather horrible.. enemy encounters are too easy, theres no need to pick any combat option other than Attack, restorative items are way too plentiful for the challenge that is given, money is worthless because you find almost everything in chests. The best gameplay that is present in the game is the sense of non-linearity. The cave near the beginning and the pyramid are two examples of this. The graphics, the music, and the insanity make Space Funeral worth it though.

I was working on one last year that's a game boy styled game with a story that kind of felt like tales meets mother, but life gor in the way and it's been stalled. I really need to work on it again, just need to organize my ideas for the second half and get that summary written.

I even got skits and jumping working.
