Just finished Expedition 33, great game. Now i want to play a RPG from my backlog. Which one of these games are the best one? In terms of gameplay and story.

Here the big one will depend on your time and plans.

1) Trails of the sky remake - There's supposed to be a sequel, so it makes sense to play through it before it comes out. It's not very long, and depending on how much you enjoy doing side quests, the game can be completed in 40-50 hours.
2) Metaphor Refantazio - It's a good game, but you'll have to sweat for 70-80 hours to complete it.
3) DQIII - HD-2D remake - It's a very enjoyable game, relaxed, and even has difficulty settings. There are many improvements that make the game easier than the original, and it's not very long 30-40 hours.
4) Shin Megami Tensei V - There's not much point in playing the original anymore. If you can, pick up Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. I'm a fan of that series, it's not particularly difficult (though some fights can be made significantly easier if you understand the bosses weaknesses and have experience with previous games). The average game length is 50-60 hours.
5) Ys X Proud Nordics - No matter how many times I tried to play this series, I always gave up, unfortunately, I don't like it. For me, the Trails of series is much better and more enjoyable than the Ys series.

thanks, i have ff16 in backlog also, but everybody shits on it so might never play it

SMTV is the only one I've beaten out of that list, and its an absolute banger so I'd go for that. Get Vengeance though, don't play the original.
Atlus has a common practice of releasing an original game and then essentially re-releasing a new edition with additional content. Vengeance includes both the original storyline from the regular 5th installment and the new one, plus other changes. So, if you own Vengeance, there's no point in playing the regular version.

Go for SMT V if you want a gameplay focused game with great combat and exploration, or Metaphor if you want a focus on the narrative.

Smt V is good, but it starts to feel boring after a while(like any other persona game). The combat in the Trails series feels more interactive and enjoyable to me; the demo was pretty good. If I were you, I'd give that one a try first. If you like persona games, go for smt 5 though.

I like the combat of Trails 1st a lot, but it is not as smooth of a game as Clair Obsur or the others on that list. Know what you are getting into, but I found the game extremely satisfying to play.

I like the combat in Trails in the Sky, but I've started the first game 3 times now. I can't seem to progress further than the beginning area. It's happened to me with all the Legend of Heroes games. I own all the games on that list. I finished SMTV back at launch, so I wasn't ready for the new version quite yet. Y's I've always wanted to finish. It's been a toss between Oath of Felghana and VII of which one to beat first. I'm no stranger when it comes to finishing them. A few are on my backlog. Currently I've been grinding some Phantasy Star IV. IMO Metaphor would be a good choice especially with the switch in art direction. Actually I'd probably pick Ys or Trails for the action combat, so you don't burn yourself out.

It's in probably worth playing as an action game. It's not an RPG and don't go into it expecting that. Avoid all the side quests and enjoy the set pieces with the music turned up.

Edit: You should still play Metaphor and Trails first though.

what storyline did they add in Vengence.
I just can't wait and always fall for the atlus original release.
Played Persona3: FES, but did P4 and P5, but never golden or royal. And can't be bothered to do the wole

At the beginning of the game you will have a choice of:
1) Canon of Creation - This is the original storyline from V
2) Canon of Vengeance - It's a new storyline, I don't even know how to say it without spoilers—it's about a new group of demon "girls"...
The full list of changes and differences can be found on Google. Be careful with spoilers.

SMTV is great.

I had played Persona 3, 4 and 5 before, but never an SMTV game and I enjoyed it more than any Persona.

Granted, maybe a non-turn based would be better to mix it up a bit?

Because in my opinion press turn is greatest turn based combat system ever. This is one reason why I was soooo glad Metaphor went with SMT's press turn instead of Persona's Once More system.
