So it's been Tony Shoupinou who's been acting as a mouth piece all along? He seems like a nice enough guy, but I really don't think he has much to do with anything.
Considering how he's acting mostly like a middleman between the community and the company and not making any official statement for Namco, I don't think it has that much relevance who he is.
What is relevant is what he said, publicly and not: Namco Bandai is fairly amused by the free exposure they are getting from this thing, and that could play a significant role in their decisions.

Who owns the IP? If From owns it, they could self publish on Steam like the baseball guy did with Reckoning.

I would say From since they published it themselves in Japan but I can't say for sure. However they probably do have contracts in place with Namco as far as where they get to publish it so I think Namco would probably still have to give it a greenlight. That said, they seem to be doing a good bit of stuff jointly so I wouldn't think it would be too much of an issue since I'm sure Namco wants to keep a good relationship with From.

This is all my personal assumptions though.

Alan Wake recouped the costs in 2 days with a price of 30€/$ (IIRC).
They put this on Steam at that price (or something around that)? It would recoup in less than that, i'm sure.

Oh man, if they released Dark Souls on Steam at $30 I'd buy it so hard my PC would explode.

If they put it on Steam at that price and sold about 100k copies, they would make a little over two million dollars. At $40 they make nearly three million. Should cover porting costs.

I dunno...would PC gamers really want a port of Dark Souls or get Dark Souls 2 at the same time as 360/PS3 owners?

Seeing it modded and looking stunning would be awesome though.

I don't reckon that's an either/or proposition. If they do this port to PC and it does well, I'd say they'll do the PC port as part of their normal process next go around.

If you're asking if PC players will play a game like Dark Souls then you don't know the PC crowd. They play shit like Mount & Blade and STALKER, Dark Souls is just another another unforgiving bitch to go to town on. PC is pretty much the home of bastard asshole videogames.

PC players modded STALKER because it wasn't hard enough.

Sorry, my post was a bit unclear. I am not suggesting they won't play it, I was more suggesting would they want a port of the old one or just wait for the new one? There are some evil games on PC and I am sure they will love Dark Souls (Well, as long as it has pad support) The more it gets out there, the more awesome the game will become. Could be a major franchise for From if they keep it fresh.

As FromSoftware goes, unless they outsource the port, they should spend the time just making Dark Souls 2. They seem to be pretty busy of late, so I wonder how much time they would have to work on a port.

I think what's interesting is Miyazaki clearly wants to do more with Dark Souls; fans want a PC version, and he personally is wondering how to expand on the game in terms of content.

Perhaps a PC version would allow From to include the DLC that they're somewhat unsure about for the console versions? Miyazaki was involved in a radio interview where he outright stated that there were complications, but he wants some DLC scenario for the game. You can read more about it in some Engrish here.

Amazing post and true.

Here's to hoping they can afford to add gamepad support.

Just going by other console to PC ports of late, it's more likely that they would not do a proper job with mouse + key controls. Since there is a direct crossover as far as mapping controls to a 360 controller on PC, it would be pretty much the easiest part of the port. It would at the very least have 360 pad support.

The stuff that will be the first left behind is stuff like AA and other graphical settings.

At worst the game will be exactly like the 360 version with no extra graphical settings and with a locked 30fps framerate (that will subsequently be unlocked by modders.) That's what happened to EDF: Insect Armageddon and that game had a lot less chance of success on PC than Dark Souls would.

This might a dumb question but what is the coop like in Dark Souls? Is it basically going through the campaign together with a friend?

There are sigils on the ground here and there (usually before a boss) where you can summon a random player to assist you. Or you can place one to offer your own help. Also, attaining a particular status in the game leaves you open to "invading" players who will try to kill you.

I would rather that the fanbase concentrated their petitioning on getting this:

So, is it possible that two internet petitions could work in a year? Operation Rainfall and now this?

If of sufficient size I don't see why internet petitions wouldn't work. Normally they get a couple thousand signatures; that I realize isn't enough to move anyone. But when you're talking 10s of thousands it doesn't surprise me they actually caused things to happen. Almost 90,000 signatures is a lot of people.

The fact that they've commented twice now about it publicly makes me think this is a lock. It's happening, 90% sure. lol

Either way the petition did it's job. It was never going to guarantee a release but it apparently opened their eyes to the demand.

Mass Effect 3 doesn't have controller support? What. The. Fuck. How does that even happen in 2012 especially with a console port?
