A great film. Jackson's best. I showed some friends this movie recently without telling them what it is about or why it is famous. It was quite fun to see their reactions as the film's insanity keeps escalating. They loved it.

For a while this was my favorite movie of all time. It's not anymore, but it's still awesome. I also thought Lionel did an amazingly underrated job as an actor. The end of the movie where he just breaks down after confronting his mother.....breaks my heart to watch. The love story was done really well too. It felt....natural.

He definitely showed off some pretty good acting chops

Speaking of his mother, the part where she ate him with her belly (which when I was younger I thought she was eating him with a stomach vagina, I guess that might still be true?) is one of the most unsettling things I've ever seen in a movie!

glad this thread popped up. Always wanted to ask if there are any other movies similar to this one that film buff gaf can recommend ?

So good.

Watching this film now.

This is an amazing film! One of my favs to this day. Are there any other films like it?

Gore comedies? There is The Story of Ricky. It's not nearly as gory as Brain Dead but it has a lot of gore.

Just gore, there's Rambo 4 (AKA Rambo). Or Lucio Fulci's The Beyond.

My private importer can't find the unrated 104 minute cut on blu-ray anywhere available :(
He can't even find a cut version available :(

That's what I am waiting on. For the longest time I have been waiting on them to bring this up again on blu yet I don't know when the fuck they will.

I haven't seen it in years and need to watch it again. I was obsessed with it on high school.

A couple of years back when I was in college, I somehow rounded up like 10 people who had never heard of it to come see a midnight screening of it at a theater nearby. They had no idea what they were getting themselves into. Somehow it went over really well.

Yeah as great as the gore is it's the comedy that really makes this movie a classic. The parody of decades and attitudes gone, the problematically intimate relationship between mother and son, the love story.

This movie almost defined my teenage years. We were a bunch of friends that would watch it over and over again, and then we started watching Bad Taste along with it. It took a couple of years before I got my hands on Meet the Feebles, which completed the trio of Peter Jackson's splatter movies. I feel like Meet the Feebles is often left out when people look back at Peter Jackson's early works, but it's not to be missed. Particularly if you like the Muppet Show.

To this day the scene where Lionel takes the baby out to the park is the hardest I have ever laughed in my life. No joke, that was the funniest shit ever to me when I saw it for the first time some 20 years ago.

And to imagine they only filmed it because they had some money left over after finishing the rest of the movie. :)

Evil Dead 2 is close, just as funny but not as gory

Troma movies like Night Of The Chicken Dead have a similar kinetic energy and gore-level but they aren't as funny

Nothing hits the sweet spot like Brain Dead.

I'm pretty sure that is a bootleg. Yeah there are plenty of bootlegs on amazon.
There is no official Braindead BD in Germany and you wouldn't find it on Amazon anyway because the movie is banned. I know that there were some official DVDs but I think they are OOP now too. There was also a DVD in UK. But the quality of both of them wasn't the greatest.

Many years ago it was said that Jackson wanted to go back to his classics and Remaster them. Maybe now that he's done with the Hobbits he will finally do it.

Just went and checked my copy, it's 97mins. You're telling me there's a 104min version out there somewhere?

That's infuriating.

I bought my copy back in the days of VHS, before DVD existed. I had to import it, cost me like $100, because Canada simply didn't have the unrated version.

I must have this mysterious extended version, if anyone figures out where to order a copy, please send me a PM.
