RTTP: Dark Souls: I'm shaking right now

Returned last week as well and just somehow beat qeelag on my first try. Rocking a holy halberd since forever together with my awesome spider shield. Thx again Durante for this awesome looking game.

Kind inhabitants of a peaceful land.

Exactly. I can give a nickname to enemies so that I don't necessarily spoil the surprise yet those who played it will recognise it and know them. They are certainly memorable if you ask me. Not because they are hard in fact there are plenty of harder enemies but their encounters... You remember them.

You can buy an unlimited quantity of the small titanite shards from the blacksmith in Undead Parish, so don't worry about wasting those.

I only found him last night because someone pointed that area out. Before I took the gargoyles down I started going that way and then saw a note on the floor stating it was probably a higher level area. Upgraded my armor and took out the demon right next to him on the first try.

Now to ring the next bell.

I'm still pretty early into Dark Souls 1, but minibosses have been causing me more trouble than any of the bosses so far in this game. :P

As for that feeling, yeah, several chalice and DLC Bloodborne bosses were like that for me. So many tries, and most were finally done w/ 0 blood vials and little health left. What a feeling! Oh, and Maneater in DeS. Screw that boss.

Every time read about Dark Souls 1 it makes me want to play it again. That's how I know it's one of the best games I ever have and ever will play. I wish I could experience it again for the first time.

I just did Qeelag last night myself. I'd never done that before. I did summon Mildred, though.

Looks like I'm at the Bed of Chaos.

Hmm.

edit: WTF lol

edit2: I suck at jumping D:

edit3: I still suck at jumping

edit4: Dodge roll + sweeping attack + nearby bottomless pit = lololol

edit5: Aiming for the platform would be a good idea next time

edit6: Wait, does the boss actually attack while I slide down the ramp? O.o

edit7: I guess that wasn't how the game wants me to time it...

edit8: Or that...

edit9: Alright I think I'm going to pour a glass of scotch now.

edit10: Wat

I don't remember being attacked as I slide. I remember getting hit by him as soon as I reached the bottom once but it was more the exception than the rule.

Platforming in Souls games have never been great. The least fun boss in the game imo.

I can't wait to read OP when he gets to the Darklurker in the second game!
I was shaking from the adrenalin and everything after I managed to kill it. :D

Well.

That's done.

I actually really like what From was going for with Izalith, but it could certainly have used some polish.

Yea the bed or chaos was my only real disappointment with the game. Even when I was head over heels in love during my first play through

The blinding magma was the most glaring fault in in my opinion. Pre-patch it was virtually impossible to avoid aggroing the legs as well making the experience all the worse for it. Luckily there is a mod to fix the magma on the pc version.

I've been replaying it for the last month and recently got to O&S. It took me over 1hr of tries and blowing through my reserve of twin humanities (to summon) to finally beat those fuckers!

It was 8:30AM and I wanted to scream I was so excited!

No jumping is necessary for Bed Of Chaos, you can just drop down on to the branch in the middle and walk up. Just time it after the double sweep so the hands don't knock you out of the air as you drop down.

I felt completely empty inside after finishing Dark Souls, just because I knew I wouldn't get an experience like that again.

Reaching the top of Sen's Fortress for the first time was the most intense gaming experience I've ever had. So much panic when I got invaded during the run when I was finally able to make it to the rooftop bonfire. For when giants are hurling massive bombs at you.

I just beat O&S myself, after getting to them and giving up on at least two other characters.

I could barely believe it when I finally killed Super Smough. Did it solo, too. My internet is too shitty to summon, although I did get invaded once.

And this is why there shouldn't be an easy mode. Moments like these would be missed.

The problem with this comment isn't that it treats the Souls series like a special snowflake, but that an easy mode for people that want it won't have any impact on "moments like these" for those who don't want to play on Easy.

This is on sale as well as the second one on Xbox this week so I finally took the plunge on the first one. Quite cheap too if anyone is looking to grab a digital copy.

I'll see if I enjoy the first one but is the second one worth playing too?

Make sure to grab the DLC as well. It is only the second time it has been on sale on XBL.

I've played DaS like 4 times and still the only way I can beat O&S is by wearing this

You can tank everything they do withouth taking damage. Even the electric aoe the OP said.

I feel the WORST every time I reach them and I have to change ALL my gear just for that battle.

I hear you OP, I just beat DS1 for the first time a few weeks ago, and O&S were the biggest challenge by far for me that whole game. My first few go-rounds the farthest I had gotten was just after Bell Gargoyles, but this last time I was determined...and even my determination was almost not enough to get past O&S. I dread doing a NG+ run because of them, actually. I started playing BB but I stopped really early in, where some jerk up in a tower keeps shooting at me with a gatling gun. I got around to him while dodging all his nonsense, and he straight up gutted me immediately. too infuriating to work with right now. I think this is one series, for me, that I need a solid break from before I can go back to a new entry. Between BB and SOTFS, I'm pretty sure I'll get around to DS3 sometime in 2018. :P

For BB gatling gun,
you can wear the dark church outfit and he will be friendly towards your or you can shoot/push him off the tower
.

And this is the moment where you realize that the Souls series can grant you experiences unlike any other game.

Yeah, after I beat Ornstein and Smough that was when I turned the game off and never played it again. My time spent wasn't worth putting up with those experiences.

Thank you for the many laughs.

W O&S a good trick is to try and keep both of them in your viewpoint, or at least be aware of each one's location at all times. You can focus on one (I focus on Orenstein) and dodge/attack but it's important to keep your awareness of the other at the absolute highest priority. If this means foregoing attacking to spend all your stamina dodging this time, so be it.

Dodging Smough was the most difficult part for me last time I fought them. I think I always end up killing O relatively simply (after the first few failed attempts) and then die over and over to Smough. You really have to roll into his attack, forward-right, in order to avoid his hammer smash. It's kind of counter-intuitive to me when actually I'm in the fight but it does make sense -- he is swinging from (your) right to left, and you always want to be rolling through the bosses attack and not in the same direction.

And of course, abuse the columns. They aren't going to be there for long, so you may as well use them when they are!

You can also run straight ahead when you come in through door to that area and jump down skipping enemies and him shooting at you. Makes it much faster going back for attempts after being killed by him.

Just started DS for the first time myself and I felt like a fraud for a while because I accidentally cheesed almost every boss and sub-boss at the beginning:

  • I completely missed the drop attack on the Asylum Demon and only beat it with a sliver of health (not really cheesing, just playing terribly)
  • I somehow got the armoured bore to walk into the fire and kill itself
  • I somehow made the Taurus Demon fall off the wall and plunge to its death
  • I summoned a knight before the Bell Gargoyles fight and he pretty much slaughtered them without much help from me
Once I rang the first bell I spent quite a while making my way down into the Darkroot Basin and decided it's probably not where I'm supposed to be going yet, then I did the same thing with the graveyard near Firelink. The upside was that I blitzed through the Lower Undead Burg, and it felt good to defeat the Capra Demon by normal means.

The Depths were a cakewalk, too...until I got cursed :-/ Man that was a pain in the ass. Kind of made me hate the game for a bit. I feel like I'm coming up to a boss in The Depths because I've just reached a giant cavern.

I also made the mistake of upgrading my Long Sword to +5, before I found the Drake Sword. I still prefer the Long Sword's thrust to be honest but the Drake does more damage.

All in all I'm loving the game, especially the level design. Sure, making your way from a bonfire to a boss only to be killed in 3 seconds flat is definitely frustrating, and getting cursed is even worse. They're the only parts of the game I've found to be frustrating. The rest is great.

I'm putting all my points into VIT/END/STR because I started as a Warrior (I think) -- is it worth putting some points into ATT just so I can throw some fire? I don't think I can even equip magic at the moment.

... Don't upgrade the drake sword. It starts strong but it has no scaling. The longsword scales with strength and dexterity with a C rank I believe so it will quickly over power the Drakesword with some upgrades and levels in strength and dexterity. This is why on the stats page the longsword has something like 80 +50. The +dmg is bonus from your stats scaling. The Drake Sword has high base damage but doesn't scale at all.

Stats wise you get diminishing returns from 40. For damage it might be worth while looking at dexterity, check your weapon's scaling. Attunement for pyromancy is a pretty good option for some variety. Wouldn't go too over board with it. It is generally not worth trying int and faith spells as they will be quite weak and requires much more investment to get you going.

I played a little bit last night, respawning enemies are a bit frustrating. Love the atmosphere. Forgetting to lock on then falling off so many times, haven't got to grips with it yet.

I went with default Warrior and picked the keys as my special. I kinda hate customising like this, feel like I'm screwing myself by choosing the wrong thing. Should I stick with that or start over?

the front entrance is guarded by 3 knights. 2 you can see but one is hiding to the left. i can't beat him because he keeps 1 hit killing me. i could spam him with firebombs but i feel like that's cheating.

Forget that notion immediately.

Do what gets you through the game and don't care about being "fair"...

Cool, thanks for the tips. When should I start worrying about weapon durability? Am I losing damage if my sword's 150/250 or whatever? Some weapons like the crystal-based swords have really low durability so I'm not sure if they're worth it or not.

Ha, no just lucky, I guess.

I'm no expert but your starting class isn't the be-all-end-all. Unless you really want to focus on magic, Warrior should be fine -- that's what I started as and I'm doing OK. I did read that choosing the keys is a waste as a beginner because you're missing out on other bonuses and gaining access to areas that'll be too hard for you in the beginning.

Just defeated the
Gaping Dragon
-- took about 4 attempts. Not bad!

Crystal weapons cannot be repaired. They have huge damage but they will break eventually. One trick is that when you upgrade it, the durability restarts because the game considers it as a new weapon I guess.

In terms of regular weapons in the main game I've never reached a point where I needed to repair it since I do so fairly regularly. You can eventually get or buy an item that lets you repair at a bonfire. I recommend this. Just repair often since the cost only goes up if you hold it off and you don't want to end up at a bonfire with low durability with your souls in a hard to reach bloodstain. The katana type weapons are usually the ones you have to be wary of breaking. I think the damage reduction doesn't happen until fairly low durability left and when it happens it is very obvious as you deal significantly less damage and there is a warning as well as an icon on the weapon IIRC.

Killing the armoured boar with fire is a perfect valid strategy. They even put some Allure Skulls right there near him so you could do it even easier.

Man, this game is hard. The deaths and going through the same bits is brutal, I will hunt down all crossbow enemies. Skeletons, nope. Ghosts, nope. Can't beat them. Maybe this way....

So, I thought I could back stab the big black knight standing there since he wasn't looking my way, well that didn't work out, throw a bomb, that just makes him mad and rushes me. I won't go that way next time. Got to the first boss and died twice, taking a break.

I'm so use to button combat wasted my health potions and lightning sword thing I picked up from a chest after buying a key, seems to work pretty good on the boss until I got destroyed, now I have nothing :(

Not even past the first proper boss yet.

I still havent played the first one but ive run through rvery other entry in the series twice including three. Possibly an argument for my favorite series of all time

Is it pronounced ORN-STEEN or ORN-STYNE?

I always say Orn-styne, because, well, Frankenstein is not pronounced Franken-Steen. that sounds stupid.
