RTTP: Freedom Fighters (where's my sequel IO?)

"The only real problem with Freedom Fighters is that there simply isn't enough of it. "

-Jeff Gerstmann, in his 2003 review of the game for Gamespot.

So tonight I felt like talking a bit about my favorite "Cult hit" game, Freedom Fighters (also the source of my Gaf user icon).

Developed by the creators of Hitman and released in 2003, Freedom Fighters was a 3rd person shooter that had you recapturing bits and pieces of New York City following a Soviet Invasion. In this universe, the Cold War didn't end, and the USSR did not collapse.

Your exploits eventually earn you the title of the "Freedom Phantom" and command of a growing squad of people. Commands were simple, with only 3 or 4 different orders to give, but this simplicity made the game very fun while still making you feel like more and more of a badass as the game went on and you routed the commies. By the end of the game, you could command around a dozen people at once, and the final assault on a soviet base felt easy because you could have your soldiers do nearly all the fighting for you.

The game's world was very well realized for the time, right down to the hammy newscasts you'd see every so often like this one:

Unfortunately, the game never got a sequel. The ending wasn't necessarily a cliffhanger, but there totally could have been more of it in another installment. I.O. went on to make more Hitman and TWO DAMN KANE AND LYNCH GAMES. Which I am totally cool with and not bitter about at all.

For some reason, this title stuck with me and I just replayed it again through PCSX2. Once you get beyond the dated controls (or change them with the emulator's options) the game really holds up well when upscaled to HD resolutions.

I just figured I'd make this thread to honor the memory of one of my favorite games of all time, and to see if any of you had anything you'd want to discuss about it.

UPDATE:

Bring this to Ps4 with trophies and an updated control scheme.

I remember this game. I don't think I played very much of it but enjoyed what I did. Funny how even as a teenager with infinitely more free time than I have now, I still always had a backlog. So many unfinished games from the PS2/GC/Xbox gen...

My brother and I used to play the multiplayer all the time.

Great game - one I love dearly. Janky AI and all. I kind of miss those days of strolling into a video game section and making buys purely on the strength of the title and back-cover information.

Rented it from Hollywood video back in like 6th grade and beat it over the weekend and proceeded to rent it again. Like everyone in this thread has said, it's a classic game and a sequel is more than warranted.

You know, there's also a PC version. KB/Mouse setup, better graphics, all the good stuff.

It also plays well on modern systems (my copy works at least).

Amazing soundtrack.

Jesper Kyd.

What-a-fucking-guy.

I'll always rememer that opening sequence. The synth and drums, the pseudo-Russian feel to it, the dramatic string orchestra, the choir when suddenly you see the Soviet planes over the statue of liberty... truly classic.

Good tip - but is there any mod support?

Ooh what timing!

One of my all time fav on Ps2, would so love a sequel on current gen hardware with same setting/gameplay, but better controls:)

I loved that game back in the day. Definitely a cult classic.
The whole alternate history setting with the Soviet Union ruling the world was very intresting. Kinda like the recent Wolfenstein with the Nazis.

Also does The Division remind anybody else of this game? I can see some inspirations.

Amazing soundtrack.
Everyone needs to listen to it.

I can make a blockbuster set-piece out of this song. No fucking joke.

I played the PC demo and I did not like how inaccurate the shooting was so I went with the Xbox version.

I've listened to the OST more then played the game.

What the fuck is I/O doing? :(

Among my favorite games from that gen. I had it for GameCube...loved everything about the game.

-The atmosphere, the Soviet Union controlled New York City in an alternate cold war scenario was interesting to this history buff.

-The game mechanics of getting additional followers to back you, and then fight for you was something I hadn't experienced in a game prior to that.

-The music. It was the first soundtrack I heard composed by Jesper Kyd, and it was the first game soundtrack I ever purchased on c.d. I loved the synths mixed with the beautiful orchestral scores, and choir arrangements. His work since this game has been phenomenal as well (Assassins Creed II being among my all time favorite soundtracks).

My hope for a sequel has diminished throughout the years, but I would love an HD remastering of the game with improved control over your fighters, and some other minor adjustments (maybe a new chapter/lost level that was cut from the original).

Loved it.
This and Psi Ops are the TPS that rocked my world back then and sadly never got sequels/remakes.

I don't remember much about the game, except that i loved it and I loved how, by the end of the game, your character will have grown long hair and a beard and gone full Che Guevara.
Or something, well i liked how the events in the game spanned several months which was reflected in your character's appearance and development, going from average civilian to resistance leader.

Always though Ea could have gotten a lot out of a Visceral made Freedom Fighters game, but they chose to sacrifice that studio with Hardline and Dead Space 3.

Making Hitman games for Square Enix who pays them. And not making Freedom Fighters for EA who probably owns that IP and doesn't pay them to make a new one.

As much as I love all the Hitman games (even the bizarro iOS puzzle game), they are basically a cash-cow. I think I/O made a couple of creative blunders (Kane and Lynch) and they need to recover. Square Enix are fully funding them only to keep making Hitman games (they said it in a recent press release).

Perhaps after they make their millions with the next Hitman we'll be able to get another Freedom Fighters.

That's a really pertinent comparison. Makes me more interested in The Division than the trailers ever did.

The soundtrack and aesthetic is what made FF, tho, and The Division doesn't grab me at all in that sense.

Awesome game, pretty unique too. I remember my friends and I loving the single and multi-player. It was really cool seeing the ever-growing number of rebels camping out at your home base after each mission.

I'm curious as to what SquEnix's plans for I/O are following Hitman 6. If given the opportunity, I wonder if they can still produce a game as good as Freedom Fighters, considering Hitman: Absolution / Kane & Lynch 1 and 2 weren't exactly spectacular.

Loved this game. Still have my copy.

Surprised (or not) that EA have done nothing with it. Loved storming areas with my fighters.

Ya I know, and given how much I love the game I will get ahold of a copy eventually. But when I felt like playing it I had a Ps2 copy and PCSX2 installed. So made it happen lol.

This is one of those rare times that a remaster would actually be a) not a massive cynical cash grab and b) purchased my me.

Fuckin loved this game, arranging my troops to key areas to provide suppressing fire and others to infiltrate while being part of the mission. It nailed the feel of being in a firefight and actively deploying troops while not feeling like god that other games of this type just cannot hit.

Yeah make it, I would buy it. Then I would tell people about it. Then I would get engaged in 4 player 16 person per team games of cat and mouse with waves of troops back and forth, this would be a way for MS to justify the crap out of cloud.

This game didn't do anything astoundingly well. The shooting was fine, the squad commands were simplistic, the story was serviceable. But it got the fucking details right- the music, the right amount of cheesiness in the soviet newscasts, and ya small things like visible growth of your rebellion that you mentioned.

It all added up to a game that was much bigger than the sum of its parts.

One of the greatest soundtracks I've ever heard from a game. Really made you amped to kill everything in sight!

I'm still salty that there hasn't been a sequel to this.

Bumping because since we are getting Ps2 classics now, I want this one, with updated control scheme.

Since IO won't make anything but fucking Hitman games now and leaves their best creation without a sequel.

I repeat...even Kany and Lynch got a sequel. WHAT THE FUCK??!?!?!

Ok so ya...bring it to Ps4 at least...

Fuck, I loved the shit out of this game back in the day. I wish they would come out with a sequel. I'm not sure it's aged especially well though.

This game was THE shit. I bought a multitap just for this game. So many late nights soent playing this with my friends.

Americans were OP though. That shotgun.

I played it the other day on PCSX2, so it was upscaled to HD making the visuals bearable.

The atmosphere actually holds up shockingly well to me, perfect cheesy red dawn-ish vibe. The controls are absolutely bizarre and weird by modern standards though, hence why I would want a Ps4 release to have an updated control scheme.

And ya, even upscaled to 1080p it's gonna look a bit rough, it's a game from 2003 which had graphics that weren't super impressive even then.

But god damn do I love Freedom Fighters, hence why I have Christ Stone as my gaf icon lol.

Hopefully homefront channels this game's ethos. I really really enjoyed this game when it came out on xbox. Never tried the PC port though. How does that hold up? Half the difficulty in the xbox game was aiming.

By the end of the game I barely had to shoot lol. Just commanded my group to hit shit. Sounds boring but it was AWESOME.

I too hope new Homefront scratches this itch, but I doubt it. Looks more Far Crym

Yeah :/

They did originally show off some sort of commands and coop gameplay through the game's cell phone interface. But I imagine the game, given the last preview, has been full on far-cry-ified since then. Either that or they focused on all the wrong talking points to attract someone like myself to play the game.

Gamecube version was the best because you pull the trigger to go into aim mode. In the PS2/Xbox versions it was some bullshit like clicking and holding down L3, which is probably why there are all those "weird control scheme" posts above.

Anyways, great game and I would also love a sequel or re-master or anything.

One of my all times faves on PS2 (and later PC). Loved how the missions were designed (first go to another area to destroy sniper nests, heli ports, bridges etc) before you could proceed. Russian news show was great aswell.

Edit: can't believe this released 12 years ago
