Well OP, you convinced me to pop the game in tonight and give it a go. While I only played horde, I had a blast. Got to level 21 with some randoms until the host quit (which was cool, I wasn't gonna stay much longer) but this was the first time I'd even gotten through a berzerker before. The boss waves are always a treat. I forgot how much I missed this game. I'll work horde into my rotation more regularly for sure.

Same here! I played King of the Hill again. Had a blast, really fun. I like that the game fills the servers with bots if there are not enough players. Will be playing this from now on, really missed a great online game.

Oh and a German sent me a voice message with a heavy accent when I used the Scorcher weapon once to kill him:
"Dat iz such a noob weapon!"

I definitely got my moneys worth out of Gears 3 MP.
It really is great IMO but I'm a little reluctant to go back to it as it can be so rage inducing.
I originally bought Gears 3 to tide me over until MW3 came out then when it did, I found I didnt enjoy it (absolutely loved MW2) so I just played Gears 3, pretty much non stop instead.

I played Gears 2 and 3 MP extensively. The best MP game out there...when it works (ie. good connection, dedi servers up, etc.)
I stopped playing it after they turned off most of the dedi servers and the connections were getting crappier and crappier. Shame. I don't think Gears will ever escape those connection problems. :/

Ditto. I remember buying MW3 just for the heck of it after having clocked some serious time in Gears 3.

I lasted maybe an hour. It just felt so juvenile; game design by children with hormones bursting at the seams. I'm 100% done with any game that resembles CoD's ultra-fast, hyper gameplay.

Haha yeah, well I used it randomly, came across one lying on the ground and didn't notice I was almost running along side an enemy. So I just roasted him in the back!

How timely. I just played this last night. Definitely took some recalibration on my part after all the MW3 and BF3, but I had fun. Game plays solid and looks purty, too.

Probably won't go back to buy all the maps. There's just so much competition among shooters these days, and their offerings are so big, you kind of have to pick one and go all-in to make it worthwhile.

I'm kinda awesome.

My main gripe is the community. I understand if you're bad but please don't play this like COD. My basic tips for excellence :

- Drop the shotgun. Seriously, stop running with it, why get close is you don't need to? Hammerburst is king for long distance, and Lancer(s) eat up people running at you.

- Ink Grenades : Use them. They freeze the opponent and block off pathways. They're easy kills and helpful for weapon control.

- Boomshot over all else. If theres a Boomshot, get that first.

- Right! You fire on your right so follow around things with cover to your left. For shotgun battles this makes people easily picked off as you time shot-cover-shot-cover so they cant hit you.

- Cover. Just use it. Even if not in it, try and keep some of your body covered.

- Don't take on more than one person at a time, and don't run off alone. Its all about crossfire : Surround them so if they avoid one of you then your teammate has them. Plus people are easily picked off alone. Winning a 1 on 5 is near impossible, while winning a 1 on 1 five times is a lot easier.

-Everything is useful, there are no campers. Period. Boltoks can take out Snipers, Ink & Explosive Grenades/Boomshot/Digger will force people out of their holes, etc. There's pretty much not a situation you can't work yourself out of tactically. The game is pretty well balanced*, just work together.

*Except Retro Lancers. Those will eat you up close range. Sawed-Off is fine, keep your distance, its that fucking Retro you should worry about.

The MP in Gears was the very best version of MP Gears in the 7-or-so years of MP Gears existing.

And that was the problem. I'd been playing that game for long enough that this best version was too long in the tooth.

I was so addicted to the beta, and played the game a lot when it first released, but I stopped after like two weeks.

It's definitely the best MP in recent memory.

I'm sad I never got to finish the campaign with 4 people. I have gotten to the Locust Queen though on Insanity alone, and now I'm stuck.

Gears 3 is a great game though, as for horde mode... I wish it wasn't 50 waves and Berserkers... they instantly ko all static def.

I adored the mechanics, but without a long term progression system a la COD, it didn't get me to commit for the long term... It's a catch 22 though, because a progression system like that would have compromised the elegance of the mechanics...

This is so true. I end up picking one or two shooters each year to dig into, the rest end as singleplayer games.

While I'm sure your tactics are sound and probably work wonders for you, I'd by lying if I didn't say that I hate the type of player you are and what you're condoning; you are more or less telling us to spit in the face of fun and the very thing that escalates this game above its peers. Gears lives and dies by the Gnasher and people use it because its accompanying mechanics are glorious. Playing against a team of your sort is pure gaming hell, but hey, you're not that prevalent and as long as you don't blatantly camp on high-ground with your douchey Lancer buddies, then I can deal with it.

Thats my point of view. Shotguns of either type shouldnt be shunned, but Gears shouldnt just dissolve into shotgun wars from the word go. Use whatever weapon is best for the situation, and i'd think you'd have more fun. That being said, I stopped playing for some reason (not enough time among other things I guess)...so I should try to refresh my gears skills sometime soon. Especially with Judgement on the way.

Yep. Also the SOS killed what could have been the best gears MP. They fixed it, but it was too late. It was EPICS own idiot fault for even thinking that gun would be good for the game.

I'm having awful flashbacks of the SOS around release. What the hell were they thinking?! I would have 0 problems with it being a pick up but spawning with it? Get outta here!

I don't really understand the hate towards the SoS. It's the easiest weapon in the game to defend against. You just don't let them get close enough to melee you, and it's almost completely worthless. Simple.

Third day after going back to Gears 3 and I'm still having lots of fun in MP,finally getting a bit better again and will probably play this a lot in the next weeks.
