RTTP: Killer7

So, yeah you can talk/ write a lot about this game. You can probably write essays about it.
I've played it on the Gamecube the first time in 2005. And now I'm playing it again in 2017 (Gamecube) and it hasn't aged at all. This is one hell of a game and deserves to get a remake in HD (well, not a remake, an updated version with HD visuals). Don't get me wrong this game still looks amazing and plays very well.
The story still is outstanding and the different characters are fun to use. Oh and it has puzzles. You have to mention this nowadays.
Everyone who hasn't played this game yet: Play it. Just don't expect to understand the whole story after your first playthrough.

Oh and I forgot the amazing soundtrack in this game.

Remember this track that always plays right before you enter the boss room?

Damn.

Such a cool game, although the controls were pretty weird. Does the reasoning behind certain things, such as the woman who
cuts her wrists to destroy barriers
(ability spoiler?), ever get explained within the context of the story? I didn't get very far into it.

Oh and I forgot to mention that it has save rooms and a Souls like mechanic where you have to use another character to revive the character that previously died. You have to collect his
head
.

This game is disturbing as hell.

You mean Kaede? Nope it had never an explanation story wise.

In hindsight I'm really disappointed that Suda's debut appearance in the west was (in my opinion) his swan song.
Non of his titles that followed had the same impact.

The minimalist cel shaded at direction is still out standing to this day. The voice actor acting is great, and so is the soundtrack. It also features one of the best bad-asses in a video game (Dan Smith).

For those who really enjoyed the story, should also check out The Silver Case (Sudas initial grasshopper release) as it contains ALOT of similarities in theme to the point where Killer7 almost seems a western remake of The Silver Case

There's certainly fan theories out there though including one that bases the actions of characters as being the opposite to what they actually were in reality (during the hotel scenes):

Kaede being selfless and "killing herself" for the benefit of passing through barriers vs. hiding from Emir in cowardice in the closet. (Notice she is wearing the exact same dress).
Kevin Smith being the silent assassin who you never see coming vs. the bell boy who stood out like a sore thumb when Emir came calling.
Mask De Smith being butt naked when getting killed by Emir in a rather humiliating manner vs. being completely clothed with a mask and a cape, giving off this "bad ass" aura.
Coyote Smith not getting the drop on Emir and being able to escape the most easily of the lot of them due to Emir leaving to the balcony and then killing him from outside vs. being able to jump great heights and lockpick
Harman Smith being sexually abused and an invalid who appears weak against said abuse vs. the cold killer who is foreboding and strong who wouldn't take any shit.
Garcian Smith saving the lives of his comrades (the Killer7) vs. killing every last member of the "Killer7" in reality, since after all, he is Emir.
Dan Smith seems to be the only one that stays true to how Emir sees him in those rare few moments.
Even other characters that also seem to be one thing change the next so rapidly like Harman's "carer" Samantha Sitbon who is abusing Harman one moment and kindly and soft spoken the next, the line of dialogue where she hits on Garcian is supposed to be a mirror into Emir's life with his mother, who abused him as a child, if I remember rightly. The reason why the game takes place in the school at the end is very much supposed to fit in with "returning to one's origins" as Garcian/Emir finally discovers himself again.

So it plays into a sort of "fabrication vs the actual reality". The TV that is in the save room is another way of Suda visually showing us the "brainwashing" - remember the Killer7 live inside the TV and pretty sure the documents in-game mentioned something about Emir being brainwashed A Clockwork Orange style, being made to watch all sorts of atrocities. Pretty sure the book "Hand in Killer7" goes into more detail.

Regarding the third eye that closes on Emir at the end, this is worth a look:

This is one of the most psychological/philosophical games I've ever played. The political side of the story is interesting as well.

Did a RTTP last year too. It was my 6th gen revisiting year, I suppose...
Brilliant game. Shame it never got a Wii version, would be perfect for it.

Never thought about this but yeah, you're right. Pointer controls would have been an amazing feature in this game. Shooting would be even more fun just like RE4 Wii Edition. Damn, what a missed opportunity.

Did Suda51 ever mentioned he was inspired by David Lynch? Because this game is pretty much "David Lynch - The Game". Well, except for the anime style and cutscenes.

edit: Damn, sorry for DP

I bought my copy at CEX in downtown Boston a few years ago. Mint copy for 6 bucks, so happy I bought it.

Yet to beat it though. :/

Idk I agree his best was Killer 7 but No More Heroes and Shadows of the Damned were great games in their own right.

I need to replay this entirely sometime. It's been at least a decade. I pop it in every now and then to play a little bit of the first few levels.

Shadows of the Damned was okay and fun but very flawed. And it was nowhere near the original concept by Suda and Mikami (thanks to EA).

Do yourself a fucking favor and play this on Dolphin. Incredible visuals STILL.

Not really necessary. This games looks great on the Gamecube or Wii with component cables. I'm playing it on a 4K TV. It's amazing.

absolutely brilliant game once you get past the fact that it feels like it doesn't want you to play it, haha

glad i stuck around years back, it's easily one fo Suda's best

for real - it looks fantastic on emulation, but GC + component is so great as well

Loved it.

Never finished it though.

I was like thirteen or fourteen when it came out so I think maybe I just wasn't smart enough to "get" it at the time. Would love to finish it now that I'm grown up and accustomed to Suda's style of storytelling.

Playing Let it Die right now and so I'm definitely in the mood to go back.

That happens a lot, lol. Go finish it, we'll wait.

Shadows of the Damned was okay and fun but very flawed. And it was nowhere near the original concept by Suda and Mikami (thanks to EA).
I don't see where I can be flawed besides it's somewhat stiff controls and performance issues. I mean game had great characters, hilarious moments, great music and and intriguing story. It was more of his more straightforward games yes, but I don't see that as a bad thing at all.

I enjoyed it, but there's no denying that EA reamed it.

Suda said:
They[EA] told us that 'westerners are about guns, so give him a gun', and the direction of the project turned 180 degrees. EA is a really macho company, and we argued with them as we developed it. Their demands were really strong. We ended up drafting the scenario five times before it was completed. In the end, each was so unique that it felt like I had basically written five different games.

In the very final(fifth) draft, it turned into a love story. EA informed us, "There's this thing called an 'elevator draft', and if you can't tell your story in the length of an elevator ride, Hollywood won't use it." All their stories fall into one of four categories.

I enjoyed it, but there's no denying that EA reamed it.
EA did for sure. Again people looking at what wasn't and not at what was. It clearly would have been better, no body is denying that. But that doesn't put past what the game actually was. If it wasn't for Shinji Mikami's influence, he wouldn't get half the creative that game got.

I played through this again a couple of summers ago and was surprised by how well the visuals still held up. This is easily my favorite Suda game and one of my favorite games period. The soundtrack is phenomenal (Rave On has been my ring tone for years) and I love how unapologetically weird and fucked up the story is. I wish I would have been able to track down a copy of the Hand in Killer7 book when it was still available.

There's a translation guide for the book, if it helps. The book is almost useless without it, lol.
