RTTP: Killer7

Yeah, I've seen the translation before. Honestly it was more about just owning it as a piece of memorabilia for one of my favorite games. I imported the Book of Hunters for the original Phantasy Star Online for DC for the same reason, it was just cool to have.

I have a copy, I'm pretty sure it's not that r-

...

Wow.

Never thought about this but yeah, you're right. Pointer controls would have been an amazing feature in this game. Shooting would be even more fun just like RE4 Wii Edition. Damn, what a missed opportunity.

Nintendont worked wonders for Timesplitters 2 in that regard. Game is at it's best played with a wiimote, no question. Sadly I don't think the same could be done for K7.

loading times? Did you play the PS2 version? Because loading times on the Gamecube are totally fine.

Gamecube,

going from one room/area to the other meant waiting several seconds for the next area to finally appear, way to much time spent on that static "loading" scene, it was my 2nd playthrough,

The first time I tried this game, I bounced off it hard. I thought it was garbage.

I came back years later. I don't know what changed, but I was in this time.

Incredible masterpiece.

Oh :(

So I guess you don't like to replay old SH games like Silent Hill 1-4 or Resident Evil 1-3? ;)

I don't mind the short loading times but I know what you mean.

Such a brilliant game. I'm glad I waited until I was a little older before playing it, as had I played it when it came out I wouldn't have understood it at all and probably hated it.

I replayed it a year or so ago and was surprised when
I realized Travis was dropping end-game spoilers right from the start.
Going through the game the first time you'd probably not realize it since the story's so weird/obtuse.

I played through this again a couple of summers ago and was surprised by how well the visuals still held up. This is easily my favorite Suda game and one of my favorite games period. The soundtrack is phenomenal (Rave On has been my ring tone for years) and I love how unapologetically weird and fucked up the story is. I wish I would have been able to track down a copy of the Hand in Killer7 book when it was still available.

I was lucky enough to snag Hand in Killer7 a few years back when Grasshopper Manufacture ran their own online store for a short time. The book was already hard to find at that point, so I damn near spit out my drink when I saw they had it in stock for a sane price.

Sadly they closed up the store before I had the chance to get that Dr. Peace single from No More Heroes or one of the NMH phone cases. :(

I had no idea Hand was rare, I just really wanted to have it. The prices are absolutely bonkers now, if you can even find it.

"Rave on" is the best "hype" music ever. Every boss fight is awesome just because this piece of music plays right before you enter the boss room. My god, I love this game.

. Incredible masterpiece of a game that is one of those games that will only ever be made once, and nothing like it will ever be made again.

None of the other Grasshopper games are as quite an acid trip as this game is.

Part of the reason I adore it, alongside the incredible art style that made incredible use of the hardware to deliver something truly unique. It was also one of the other cel-shaded kind of stylish games like Wind Waker that appeared on the gamecube.

TSC is really damn close. Not even K7 has live action cutscenes.

Do yourself a fucking favor and play this on Dolphin. Incredible visuals STILL.

any major bugs or anything to watch out for? I've got a copy of the game that I've been wanting to play, but no Wii or GameCube to play it on. Was thinking of going with Dolphin to save the cash on buying another console.

I own this game, bought it (after years of hype) when it finally launched on the Gamecube. But i made the mistake of trying to play it when i was drunk and it really made no sense at all. Never played it again, lol.

Welp, I'm behind.

Gonna buy that when I have money.

On topic, what was your favorite Killer 7 boss?

Dan Smith vs whatshisface is the winner for me.

Honestly, probably Ayame Blackburn. It really kicks the door down from the start.

It's past your bedtime.

this game sure was an odd one back in the day

just much dos reading the translated notes for the book matter?

Honestly you'd probably get more out of the translated notes than owning it. I'm glad I own it, but it's mostly a TON of words with gameplay screens.

Here's an abridged timeline thanks to Paradise Hotel:

I've had this game for years (2006 I think) on the PS2, but I always found it really difficult. I got to the second level which was in the house in Japan, and I got to use Kaede's ability, but I always got stuck.

I enjoyed what I played of it though. Is there a guide/tips to help get started anywhere?

with fangamer doing the legends of localization stuff and the upcoming third edition books of ff7, mgs, and dark souls there should be a push for an official translation of hand in killer7 released physically.

i'd pay so much goddamned money for that kickstarter.

where did you get stuck?

The GHM/Capcom snafu would probably make it a legal nightmare. I believe someone did a translated PDF of it, though.

where did you get stuck?

I can't remember exactly. I remember being in the Japanese house after the first boss where you play as Harman himself, and it was on fire I think?
I wasn't stuck in the sense of not knowing how to progress, it was more the fact that I didn't know the best use for each character, so they were all dying on different areas of the map.

The easiest one to use is Kevin since he doesn't have to reload and has very fast firing speed. Con is good too, but he has really low health, so he's going to die fast.

you can progress with every character most of the time, with the characters essential to progress already unlocked. if you need to switch to a character you'll hear a guitar riff.

the only character that's needed for "puzzle enemies" is dan, as his three charge shot is needed to kill spawners. i'm not sure if kaede or coyote is able to with their single charge shot.

why haven't we gotten an HD remake yet? Never beat this game because my little brother overwrote my save.

Suda recently said that he wanted to talk to Capcom about the possibility of doing a remaster, so the ball is in their court. I suspect that there might be some issues with the animated cutscenes, in that they probably don't have HD-quality sources available, but given their super clean aesthetics, they might upscale a bit better than if they were more detailed.

Personally, my ideal HD remaster would include options for both the original 4:3 framing and whatever 16:9 mode they would come up with, subtitles for the cutscenes that adhere to Suda's vision that was executed in the Japanese release yet completely absent in the western releases (red throbbing highlights for any word relating to "kill"), and, of course, the option to toggle between the original ghost audio that Japan got and the more heavily filtered version they did for the west. I wouldn't be that opposed to other bonuses, like, say, a sound test so we could finally get a proper full soundtrack rip (not to disparage the original OST release, but it's not the complete OST at all) and a gallery that features all of the trailers they did for the game and perhaps some Hand in Killer7 samples, but I think having a release with those things I mentioned would be enough.

My favorite Suda game with No More Heroes.
Excited to see what his return behind the director chair will produce.

Everything is so bad ass in this game.
I don't know if it's just me but I think this game is creepy and disturbing. The whole atmosphere feels like a nightmare.
The laughing, the "monsters", the speaking dead bodies, the sound effects....

And then there's "rave on". The only moment when the game tells you to take a short break to prepare yourself for an awesome boss battle.
