RTTP: NFS Rivals - Shockwaves for days

I hadn't played this in quite a while but decided I'd boot it up the other day and try to get my first retail game Platinum trophy. I only had about 20 levels to grind so it wasn't a ton of playtime really, a few hours max.

I was really leery of getting the new NFS, but I even convinced a friend of mine who dislikes racers to get it and play with me. I wasn't too big of a fan of Criterion's efforts, Hot Pursuit 2010, and Most Wanted 2012 so I was of course worried about Ghost Games since they were comprised of 80% of Criterion.

But my worries were put to rest. NFS Rivals to me is easily the best NFS since Hot Pursuit 2 on PS2. My non racing friend also played the hell out of it. Rivals is literally the only racing game where I've enjoyed it's open world immensely. Burnout Paradise's open world was okay, had some cool shortcuts and jumps but to me felt a bit bland and uninspired. Rivals has a ton of different environments (snow, desert, city, woodlands, free ways, etc), dynamic weather and day/night cycle, solid graphics, tons of shortcuts, ridiculous jumps everywhere, just a great open world to cruise around in.

But I platinum'd it no problem and enjoyed my time with it once again. I love the way the cars handle for the most part and drifting around crazy winding roads down a snowy mountain is very enjoyable. There are a few faults though. Like having to deal with police NONSTOP if you're playing a racer. You can literally spawn in the game as a racer, not do anything at all, go eat some dinner and come back and you'll be busted. The second you spawn you have broke the law and cops are out to murder you. That was really my biggest issue. Would have been nice to turn the cops off and cruise around as a racer as their cars handle better than cop ones imo.

Oh and one awesome edition to this NFS was freakin weapons. My favorite weapon was the Racer's Shockwave. This ability is so powerful, you can be drifting around a turn right there with an opponent, shock wave them, and they will barrel roll off a cliff. Shockwave is one of the best things in this game and has given me many laughs. It's also fun (and mean) to troll people online. Blowing past a fellow racer (or cop) and shockwaving them as you drive past possibly ruining their race or the points they've stocked up is a good way to blow off some steam in the game if you're feeling frustrated.

I recommend just playing the cop though if you don't want to deal with some of the games faults. You can roam around the island freely w/o any worries (except for other people in your game of course). They also have decent weapons that are fun to use.

NFS Rivals is awesome and since there won't be a new one this year, this'll have to settle people's NFS fix for a while. And it totally does.

I think I typed too much. This game is good!

Not sure how you can say this is better than Hot Pursuit. The open world is small, the online is bad and its not easy to get in races with other people. The singleplayer is boring as the events arr too much the same. The story is cringe worthy. The constant loading is terrible. The driving feels noticably worse than in Hot Pursuit or even 2012's Most Wanted.

And even though Driveclub looks a bit more sim than this (while still being arcady) I think it will blow this game out of the water as best racing game on PS4.

Been wanting to get this since the PS4 launched...but the PSN store price hasn't gone down yet! Ugh. :( I know physical prices have, but I'm really trying to stay committed to a digital future :P

I have it on PS4 it's a ok NFS but nothing compared with Hot Pursuit 2010 i play that game more often as on my pc or ps3. Still the best out there and the handling is amazing on that game.

Its on sale right now in EU, pretty sure its been half price on the US store too.

Still the best launch game by far. I will double dip on PC now the 60fps nonsense is fixed.

I hated Hot pursuit 2010. Its Burnout, but with heavier cars

Likewise, Most wanted 2012 just felt souless.

NFS: Rivals is both a good NFS game and a good Criterion game. Just a shame about the framerate.

Well I sure hope DriveClub does because it's my most anticipated game.

The open world is small but full of fun roads to drive. Hot Pursuit's open world was so bland and way too many straight roads for miles it seemed. The online is good enough for me and my friends to do things. It was bad compared to Most Wanted 2012 though. I do agree it was much harder to organize a race with randoms, and that does suck.

The single player I thought was awesome because as a Racer you could choose to either do races and whatnot, or choose a just driving around way to level. For instance it might have been catch 20 seconds of air time and 15 near misses for a level.

There was a story? I wouldn't know I skip cutscenes in racing games. The loading was bad and should have been touched up on but I made due. I thought it had the best driving model out of all NFS's released in the past few years.

Its definitly not as good as Hot Pursuit 2010 but it's very pretty and still enjoyable so yeah it's good and fun but you can feel it was made in a single year and rushed for cross gen day one

Like what exactly?

This game is capped at 30fps on PC. For to run it at constant 60fps when you add the line in commands in origin then yes it will run but still not as good because ghost games was incompetent to even make a decent PC port it's running on the frostbite engine for christ sake the same engine that is running for BF4 for example. And since it release no updates at all just shows that they threw this game towards PC gamers and just left it for what it is.

Ya know I liked this game just fine. It's...alright. But it kind of ticks me off that it's the sole racing game on PS4. Because it isn't even really a racing game. Mostly it's a "stay away from the cops long enough to bank your loot" kind of game. Or on the cop side of things - it's "catch the criminal."

Again, it's fine for what it is. But it leaves me wanting a LOT more. I am not satisfied.

Hot Pursuit 2010 really is the most underrated arcade race ever. That game has given me so much fun and satisfaction for years now.

I really wanted to like Rivals, as it was released as Hot Pursuit 2010's spiritual successor, but in the end i was left with feeling 'mehh' about the whole thing. Basically because of what Didn'tKnowJack says above, and because the port on PC lacked serious optimisation.

I enjoyed Rivals until having to do all 60 events on both sides for the plat trophy (just got tedious) but defiantly one of the most fun NFS I have played.

Also not related too Rivals but NFS I think EA made a good decision in not putting out the next NFS game this year due to how packed it is for driving games (Forza Horizon 2, DriveClub, Project Cars and The Crew).

Oh, another 30fps locked PC racing game port that runs like shit if you try to unlock it.

Yeah, 1 of 2 reasons I got it on PS4, other was friends.

But I wasn't expecting a good PC port considering the support Most Wanted got. Horribly optimized game especially with I believe it was reflections on high (even wii u had similar reflection quality). And I know it was another dev, but The Run took several months to get a patch to knock off the 30fps cap on it.

Basically, the hell with NFS on PC. Hot Pursuit is the only good port in some time. Didn't the 360 version of MW (2005) even get a few graphic updates the PC version was missing? Also, PC got the crap version of Hot Pursuit 2.

I think the game is great and on par with Hot Pursuit (2010). I play it on PC and use the 60 fps hack, but sadly my rig only manages to hold the framerate maybe 80% of the time. Every time I drive through the town area and a few buildings come into view the framerate drops significantly. Also a few events are broken if I use the hack.

I will probably enjoy this game even more once I upgrade my PC, but I don't know yet when that will be.

For those that are interested: I run the game on my 670GTX and estimate I would need 780GTX to run the game at a steady 60fps.

I got it at launch (because, hey, there weren't many choices, and I like burnout/NFS games generlaly) and was overall disappointed.

Found the game to feel very half baked, with 30 and sub 30 framerates and many problems, not the least of which the whole idea of being chased by cops all the time is very, very annoying. In Burnout Paradise and so on I really enjoyed exploring the map and doing things at my own pace. Being chased by an army at all times just saps the fun out.

Great game, way better than I expected but fuck the police. Fuck them so hard. They bordered on annoying and almost ruined the game for me.
