RTTP: Shenmue II on OG Xbox

After the awesome announcement, the rush, the tears, the excitement and the $500 pledge, it is time to revisit Shenmue II. I had bought the game a while back and... did not finish it. So, time to finish it.

First, gotta get that Xbox.

Checking inside

Yep, looks OK. But oh wait... let's check for that clock cap...

Nope, everything in order.

Now, time to get the game

Checking for old data first...

Yup, old savefile. But I'd rather start fresh. So,

And here it is...

Gotta beat it this time!

I'll be streaming just the game too, so feel free to visit me at http://www.twitch.tv/neoak/

So I have a question about this game. I looked it up on howlongtobeat.com and it said that the game takes upwards of 26 hours to complete. Now, I know Shenmue did not take anything near that long, so is this game that much longer? For reference, I think I beat Shenmue in about 14 hours.

I am prepared to be ripped to shreds, but I own both and never started. I will atone for my sins this weekend.

That OG Xbox feels.

I'm replaying the Xbox version on Xbox 360. Questions:

1) is the occasional slowdown due to emulation, or did that also happen on the Xbox/DC?
2) I'm also experiencing some music issues. Were those present before?

Not that these things are impacting my enjoyment, it's still just as I remember it.

Play it on my 360, thank god it was one of the lucky few to be BC.
few = 51% of OG library btw

thought I'd check when I played shmoo2. SO OG THE GAME WASNT EVEN OUT

slowdown is worse on DC ver
dunno if sound issues are present on OGXB as I just play it on 360

You're telling me 51% of OG library is BC on 360? Since when? I thought it was rather limited, but I only care about Shenmue 2 so I never really looked into it.

Oh man,
I was kinda like wtf at the end of 2. I've had a long time to recover.

^end game S P O I L E R S, they're brutal

I was going to replay Shenmue on my Dreamcast when 3 was announced.

Ran up into the loft.

Found my Dreamcast.

Found Shenmue.

Squealed with joy!

Hour later..... still can't find the power cable or the game disc.

God dammit!

Maybe 51% are written on the xbox website, but that's not the number that work perfectly. and there are plenty of great ones that aren't compatible.

Work perfectly? you're right, not 51%. But 461 of XB's 799 titles can be played on a NA 360. Wikipedia lists the metric, not the xbox website, and includes all known compatibility problems

is the xbox version or dreamcast better?

Depends on what you're looking for.

Dreamcast version has Japanese audio with English subtitles. I think that's great.

Xbox gets rid of the slowdown that plagued the Dreamcast version in a lot of spots.

Xbox version has bloom lighting added, which some people liked and some people didn't.

I ended up just getting both.

I managed to score the PAL Dreamcast version of Shenmue 2 last year in mint condition for $60 including postage but realised I got rid of S1 a long time ago when I dug out my DC collection. Can't believe how much the original has jumped in price since the announcement.

I vow to play this first two games before Shenmue 3 is released. A shame we won't be able to use our save file from the first two games. :-(
