RTTP: Shenmue II on OG Xbox

Alright, my converter box to connect composite to HDMI arrived a few days early so I'll be starting this tonight on an original Xbox. It's been a while since I played the first Shenmue so I hope I remember enough of that game's story and characters (I just read the synopsis on Wikipedia and I remembered it all well enough (though I had to look up portraits of the characters because the names were a bit of a blur to me)).
I hope you meant Component to HDMI

Ya heard me!

Anyway, I got to put an hour into it tonight and made it up to the Cover Over hotel. I feel like so far this city/environment is less detailed, but the performance and control is a lot better than the first game on Dreamcast (less load times, too!).

Edit: I'm also glad I sneaked a peak at a beginners tips and trick page that told me to spend all my money on zippo lighters at the very start.

Jesus, composite then?

what a waste.

There are more issues than just that, IIRC:
- Attempting to play Hang-On freezes the game. This is quite a notable bug, as it completely prevents Hang-On from being unlocked in the Passport.
- Lower framerate (not sure if in general), particularly noticeable near the fountain in Pigeon Park.
- Random Sound glitches (Voices/Instruments/Music may randomly cut out. Most times pausing/unpausing will fix it. Rarely, a save/reload might be necessary)
- Random Graphical glitches (It's been a few years, but I believe I ran into a one around Pigeon Park, where the environment flickered/disappeared)
- As you said, one of the later cutscenes is noticeably out of sync.
- The bloom lighting effect introduced in the Xbox version is missing.
- The camera filters introduced in the Xbox version are missing (kind of a useless feature, though, so not much of a big deal).

It's still quite playable on 360, for the most part, but it's only recommended if that's the only viable option for the player.

Fair enough, though the only one I remembered was the sound sync glitch, since the others don't amount to much IMO.

The ability to play the game handsomely upscaled on a modern TV easily outweighs any of those faults for me, and the 360 is probably the easiest (and cheapest) way for most people to experience one of the best games ever made. I wouldn't want people to be put off doing so for what are in reality very minor issues.

You can even get the undub if the voices get to you.

Hadn't heard about this - I may well check it out, since the English VO IS pretty awful.

So, I think I'm going to play a "day" every day until I finish the game (and by that I mean about an hour every day). So far I'm beginning the quest to get the third of the four Wude. I'm glad the voice acting is still terrible like it was in the first game, but I don't know how I feel about the layout of Honk Kong; I get confused about where I am a lot, but that could be because I'm so early into the game and not all the familiar. I haven't figured out the deal with Joy yet.

Question: I've been telling the guy at the Come Over hotel that I don't have any money, but he hasn't had me pay yet. Is he going to make me pay at some point if I just keep telling him I have no money?

Coming from the original the game sort of throws the gauntlet at you putting you in a foreign environment. There's a reason why when asking for directions NPC's will actually give you option of taking you there. Still take your time, explore the environment.

More importantly don't try and second guess the game and find out information in advance. Experience it the way you should- in the dark.

UNMARKED SPOILERS SINCE THIS IS A RTTP AND NOT A LTTP thread:

So I've basically turned this thread into my own LTTP (and I don't want to make a new thread since there are so many Shenmue threads on the front page already)...

Wow, I thought I was at the end of the game, but to my surprise it kept going! I got done with Hong Kong and thought the game wouuld be over since the first game was so short and not much happened plot-wise in it. But, now I'm in a new town, so I figure I'm only at the halfway part.

Shenmue II seems a lot more friendly and forgiving than the first game. The QTE and fights so far are easy, the camera pans and other information on where to go are really helpful, and I like the following mechanic if you are truly lost. Oh, and the ability to wait until certain times of the day, and warp to locations after significat meetings make the game a lot more enjoyable to play. I can understand why people might not be happy with these inclusions since they break a lot of the monotony and dullness and "realness" that was in the first game, but I welcome these friendly changes. The one thing that I still didn't like is the layout of Hong Kong. I never really got a grasp on the layout, and revereted to the maps many times, and I never had this problem in the first Shenmue. Also, the signage at times was difficult to read.

Also, I liked the characters a lot more in this game. They felt like they had personalities. Yeah, the voice acting is still attrocious, but they felt distinct and personable. Joy seemed to disappear, and I couldn't find her to say goodbye before I left Hong Kong. And, airing out the books is much better than the forklift (only because I encountered a bug in the first game with the forklifts that prevented me from advacing in the story).

So, like I said, I'm probably halfway through the game and I just entered the new city. I still don't know who the girl with the braids is from the first game's art and the dream stuff, so hopefully that gets explained within this game. Also, and it's been a long while since I played the first Shenmue (I watched the recap video in Shenmue II), but should I at this point of the game understand the significance of the mirrors? I know Lan Di wants them, and that he killed my father for the Phoenix Mirror, but why?

Unless this section is more tedious or difficult, I think I might finish the game before Monday. I'm glad I bought this game before the price hikes and I can finally play the Dreamcast sequel.

[sorry for spelling issues. I wrote this quickly on an ipad]

Glad to hear your impressions thus far.

You are right in many respects, Shenmue II increases the stakes in almost every category compared to the original. I always felt the games true narrative only started forming late in the sequel and always thought Chapter 1 was something of an extended prologue.

With regards to your question, keep playing you may get more information ;)

Finally got around to playing my copy of the first game after the announcement of 3. What a great game! I'm just starting Disc 3, and have been scouring the local stores for an Xbox copy of 2.

Can't wait to keep playing!

Any chance you can track down Euro version of Shenmue 2? Despite improved night-time lighting and ability to take photos, I much prefered the Dreamcast incarnation.

Yeah I'll definitely keep an eye out for both. Thanks for the advice!

It may sound silly but a big part of Shenmue II is making you feel disconnected being in this new large foreign landscape. And unless you speak Japanese, having the original voice-acting I think helps add to that sense.

Plus (Minor character name spoiler)
Ren
gives an amazing performance.

I've been replaying Shenmue II again on DC. Today I just rented The Order: 1886.

Even after many years, Shenmue's QTEs are still fun and engaging, while the new generation's take on them feels stale and misses the point of them (IMO). It's kind of funny, really. I think it's because a lot of Shenmue's design philosophy in terms of the action comes from arcade style games.

If Shenmue III has QTEs that are as engaging as Shen 1 & 2, then I do not mind that at all. :)

NO SPOILER TAGS.

Woah. Woah. Woah.

Slow down, little lady. I searched for you before I left Honk Kong. Don't you get mad at me, Joy! It's not my fault I was trying to find you and the game didn't let me! (wait, why is she here? that doesn't make any sense at the moment).

And, jeez, that last sequence was really action-packed in the building with handcuffs. A lot of Shenmue II seems like a reaction to the first game where nothing happened except you bought a ticket, you lost your ticket, and you got on a boat. I've done so much more in this game so far compared to the first. And, I don't know if that is a good thing or not.

Sidenote: i've only gotten two rainy days so far. Weather in this game feels a lot less than the first game.

Also, I'm really getting lost in Kowloon. Like Honk Kong, it just doesn't feel as defined as the city in Shenmue I. Almost as if they had twice the scope but half the budget. I'm sure there are articles/documentaries/talks out there that discuss the making of this game, and I'll be sure to watch and read them after I finish it.

Now I'm listening to a cassette tape. One of the things I love about this game is how it is rooted in factual history (i.e. no audiotapes, but actual cassette tapes you must listen to at a table). Like the first game, this game is ballsy.

Time for tonight's break.

I've been getting PMs about the stream.

I will steam again on Friday and maybe Saturday and Sunday.

Sorry guys, I started a new job this week and I have a summer class so that ate my free time until this weekend.

Your up to my favourite part of the game. Kowloon has so many awesome action sequences, it still remains my favourite part of the series so far. Can't wait to hear what your opinions are on the later parts of this chapter :)

Do yourself a favour and explore as much of Kowloon as possible. Its largely pointless to do so as there isn't really all that much story centric stuff to discover but there are so many small, awesome details hidden throughout the area.

Regarding your point on weather. Yeah I felt the weather was just a tad better in the first game. Maybe it was because of the awesome snow effects, but I didn't care about the weather as much in the second game compared to the first.

I guess right now I'm thrust into a lot of story stuff, so I'm critical-pathing so far, and maybe that's why I'm confused on the layout since I"m not familiar with the city. Also, and this might just be preference, but i've so far found the city to just be kind of bland and ugly. I haven't found its personality yet. So far, and I'm early into the city, I'm just running around, seeing a random building entrance, and moving onto the next until I find the one I need to go into. And, unlike Hong Kong, I haven't found any main characters worthy of interaction.

Oh, and I forgot to mention this, but for the record, I was flush with cash due to gambling, so I did pay my rent at the Come Over hotel before I left Hong Kong.

I know it may be hard because the sequel is much more story-driven and you have options such as auto-skipping time for important appointments and what not but the only way to truly familiarize yourself with the surroundings is to give yourself ample time to explore your surroundings.

Kowloon is deliberately presented as this huge labyrinth but as the poster indicated there's a ton to see and do in between the larger story moments. Also once you have a new clue try engaging with secondary characters as you are often given interesting dialogue. 10 years after the first game were released veteran players were still discovering new conversations and insights into some of the characters.

Just got to the Man Mo temple, and discovered
one of the Wude
shortly after.

Man, this game is getting good. Hong Kong is pretty huge, too. Can't wait to meet more martial arts masters. I went straight to Jianmin.

I love reading people's impressions and recalling my first time playing the games.

Jianmin teaches you a few interesting things.

Also, and it's been a long while since I played the first Shenmue (I watched the recap video in Shenmue II), but should I at this point of the game understand the significance of the mirrors? I know Lan Di wants them, and that he killed my father for the Phoenix Mirror, but why?

He killed Ryo's father for the Dragon Mirror.
These scenes in Shenmue 1 talk about the mirrors (spoilers, obviously):

So I didn't have a lot of time to play today, so I just roamed around Kowloon. I bought all the maps and I feel like I got a much better lay of the land, but I still don't know about the town in general. I'll write something more substantial about it when I finish the game.

No story progression today. Also, I woke up this morning and thought "did I write phoenix or dragon mirror yesterday" in regard to the Ryu post. I totally meant Dragon Mirror.

And, I still haven't seen the girl from the intro! And she was in the first game, too! I forget but Shenmue was designed to be about 10 chapters or so, right? Was the first game chapter 1 and this game Chapter 2 and 3?

Suzuki has reported there are 11 planned chapters. Shenmue contained the first chapter. Shenmue contains chapters 3-6 (Chapter 2 was cut content
which involved a battle with Chai when taking Boat from Japan to Hong Kong
)

I'm going to have to stop playing until I get some component cables for my og xbox. These seem ok I guess?

Yeah, they should work fine unless you want 5.1. For that you should go for the official kit IMO. I went to a retro store to get one so I could hook up the Xbox to my Astro Mixamp.

Also, gonna stream more Shenmue II now for those who asked.
Last day in Hong Kong

Back to playing after a few day's absence. I'm glad I spent time just wandering around the city because I didn't really care for this last section I played through.

Finding the bird store was a fun hunt, but I didn't like the broken elevators, constantly switching between them, and the stairs. It felt like it was padded.

And speaking of padding, the slow tailing was booooorrrriiiinnngg. You have to be close enough since the draw distance makes characters disappear, but not to close. It never became an issue, and was never tense, and the QTEs were really easy (press left!). I think so far this has been my least favorite part so far, but I did enjoy the idea of the parrot hunt. Going through the cassette tape was great (did I mention that last time? I don't remember where I left off and if I posted about it).

When this is all done, I'm going to need to look at a wiki to help flesh out some of the story from the first game to this one because I'm drawing blanks on little details that I know will enrich lots of things.

Kowloon has grown on me, but it is still a distant third location that I've enjoyed playing. And, despite enjoying this game more than the first, it is really making me respect the original Dreamcast game.

Random thoughts/questions that I have that I DONT WANT ANSWERED:

I know Ren wants money, but he really turned himself around from the first part of the game. It seems sudden and odd.

Joy appeared for one scene so far... why? Where'd she go? Will Ryu ever return home to the girl he saved and rode with on the motorcycle (the love interest?)?

I still don't know who the girl in the dream sequence from the first game and the intro to this game. If she doesn't appear in this, I'll be very disappointed.

I still don't really get Lan Di's plan either. He wanted the Dragon mirror for reasons, presumably to do something magically evil, but I guess he didn't know there were two of them? that's why he is no longer chasing me? He still doesn't know there are two mirrors?

I'm after Zhu, because he wrote a letter, but I still don't know why yet. I hope this isn't an unresolved cliffhanger.

Some of those questions may be answered in this game, but that's my current frame of mind right after this parrot hunting / shadow tailing sequence (if something is answered or explained in the first game, please let me know). After I saved Zhang, I wrote this and quite for the night. I'll play more tomorrow, hopefully.

I got all the way to the top of the abandoned building, and then screwed up the last QTE beam and fell to the bottom. I totally thought it would check point me right before then since checkpoints have been good so far, but nope! lol.

The three big fights, against the people in the photos, were really tough. I tried to fight them fair, but I kept failing (especially at the guy who would spin-throw me out of the rink every time). So, I had to put the controller on a flat surface and just spam left and x/a until I won. Only one I didn't have to fight multiple times was the lady (I'm glad the QTE was easy).

I was also getting ready to say before this that I wish money played a bigger factor in the game, but then I had to pay all those entrance fees. I'm glad I had a thick stack from Big Small at the docks.

Not much story happening this time around, just fights.

Are you referring to Ghost Hall building?

I loved the Street Fighting in Shenmue 2. If you haven't I encourage you to participate in more street fights in Kowloon to hone your skills as there are much more difficult upcoming battles.

Yup. Ghost Hall Building.

Though now I'm trapped in the Thousand White Building. I feel like I've been in here for almost two hours just walking around, doing the occasional stealth sequence, QTE, and fight. I can't wait to get back out of here. Poor Yuan and that bucket of garbage, though.

I'll pick up from here tomorrow. This building, like almost all of Kowloon, is so drab and ugly to look at. I miss Honk Kong.

Edit:

... I lied.

I wanted to get out of the tower so I played for another hour. Got to the top of the building to see Lan Di fly away from a helicopter silently (did they not get the voice actor back?!?! I kid, but it did feel a little awkward). The fight with the heavy guy was fairly easy, but I had to retry the fight before that against the 6 or so guys a couple of times. I'm glad I finally rescued Zhau to get some backstory (is Ryu's dad a murderer?!?!? probably not, though who did kill Lan Di's father? Why does everyone but Lan Di know about needing both mirrors? Why is Ren not continuing the journey with me since for little reason "money" he traveled to Kowloon with me?). But, I already knew that you need both mirrors, and the Big Dipper stuff, so I didn't get as much as I hoped I would.

At this point I thought the game was ending, as I was leaving Kowloon (before one last visit to Hong Kong), but now I'm in a jungle town (this is where I saved and quit). So much more has happened in this game compared to the first. It just doesn't end! I guess it really is about twice the length of the first game if not more.

Side question: is there a "Shenmue II: The Movie", either officially or fan made, that is similar to Shenmue The Movie disc supplement?

The last section in Kowloon culminating in the rooftop confrontation with Don Nui and Lan Di still is one of my favourite videogame sequences. I can't remember if you played the first game but there didn't need to be any dialogue between Ryo and Lan Di as the staredown was really all that was necessary at that point.

Now you are in Guilin, prepare for a completely different change of pace...

Glad you are enjoying it. Doing a DC playthrough right now, made it to Kowloon yesterday, but am taking my time. I forgot just how BIG Kowloon is, I wish there were more optional scenes ala Wan Chai, but it is still really a cool environment. Hell, when exploring the God of Wealth building I found a gacha mahcine for AM2 games. Never even seen it before.

Had some other fun stuff in my playhtrough as well, as I unlocked the duck racing in Wan Chai, best hidden minigame ever!

huh i don't think i ever watched that shenmue recap dvd, i know what i'll be doing

Depends on what you're looking for.

Dreamcast version has Japanese audio with English subtitles. I think that's great.

Xbox gets rid of the slowdown that plagued the Dreamcast version in a lot of spots.

Xbox version has bloom lighting added, which some people liked and some people didn't.

I ended up just getting both.

The only true way to experience the game. The english VA is so bad. I mean, I can't tell if the Japanese VA is bad, but not having the knowledge is better, imo.

Yup, played the first game a while ago (I've forgotten minor details, but I remember a lot of the major plot points. I have to look up some names occasionally though to match with photos of who they were).

The last section of Kowloon was great, but long. And, I just got tired of seeing the bland hallways all the time. I "get" why it is that way, but I still found it visually tiring.

And, so now I'm in Guilin, and... finally! I loved the sequence in the river. And I'm so glad you FINALLY get to meet her. It was such a great way to introduce her after teasing her in the dreams of the first game, and the intro of this game. Also, it's nice to be in a different place that is unlike anything else in this game nor the first game.

What kind of sucks is wandering around the forrest almost blindly, and those random running QTE sequences. I'm glad you get to chat to your heart's content, but a lot of the dialogue is filler; I guess I know bears are ok to approach but not their cubs! The music is really good, though. And, silly as it was, collecting the firewood felt like something out of the first game and was nostalgic.

I played right until we got to her town (there's really no good places to stop in this section) so as soon as she left to go make dinner, I saved and quit. I guess we meet her adoptive father tomorrow morning. Oh, so that's why they call this series Shenmue, huh? Like Ryu, I flashbacked to the cherry blossom tree at this home.

THAT"S THE ENDING?

Oh man, I knew it would be a cliffhanger, but boy! The game becomes extremely linear in Guilin, but I'm happy it advanced the story as it did. And, the new scenery was nice. I knew it had to go that way, but I don't know if I'm sold on the magical powers of the mirror/sword.

In summation, I think this plays better than the first game, but it has been such a while since I played the original that I can only make comparisons in my mind. Retroactively, I like the limited scope of the first game, if only more stuff happened in it. Hong Kong was difficult and confusing to traverse, and definitely not lived in as much as Yokosuka. I kind of wish the city was bigger and more alive than it was to make the shell shock of Ryu in a foreign land a bigger deal. Yeah, it's different, but not as drastically different than what I would have wanted. Kowloon was a big disappointment. I didn't like the city, I thought it was strange that Ren followed me and Joy showed up, along with the guy giving me the contract fights. And, it was just ugly to be in all the time; all the stuff inside the decayed and abandoned buildings became boring as a result of the lack of visual flair/style. I think that section had some great sequences, such as the rush to the rooftop and the climactic fight (which I'm glad was the last fight in the game despite it going on for another few hours), but as a whole I was just burnt out on that city and wanted to leave faster than Ryu.

So I guess in Shenmue III there's going to be a sidekick (until she inevitably gets kidnapped), but from there, I don't know. I am confused about Nozomi. Ryu said she went back to Canada, and I know that was talked about in the first game, but I don't remember her leaving or it becoming explicit. Lastly, other than the scene at the campfire with Shenhau, I kind of wanted more connection to the first game. Maybe Ryu gets a letter letting him know how everyone at home is doing or something.

There's really nothing like these games. What's the fan reaction/consensus to the two games? Is the first held in higher regard or do people like the second one more? Is it like a Mass Effect 1 vs 2 situation where 2 plays better but diehard fans like the first more?

Never played the Shenmue series or had much interest for it, but gotta give OP props for playing Halo CE on Legendary for his test stream. Went back and watched some of that rebroadcast, looks good.

Drop that AR and pick up some Plasma weapons.

Now imagine that cliffhanger and waiting for almost 14 years for some sort of conclusion. Then you can understand why some Shenmue fans, including myself are so rabid for a third title!

First of it's Ryo, not Ryu ;) First time playing Guilin it was just such a shock as tonally it's completely different than the proceeding chapter but really different in the context of both games. I think this analysis provides some good context on 'magic realism' and hints of where some of the story beats may go.

I've sort of given up comparing Shenmue 1 & 2. David Simon, creator of the Wire had a great quote when discussing his favourite season comparing them to individual chapters of a novel, which is very much how Shenmue was structured. The slow build up, methodical pace of the first game is almost necessary for you to really feel the excitement and vast scope of Hong Kong and Kowloon. As a kid that lived in Hong Kong and China in early 90's I have to say no game has bettered captured sense of flavour and atmosphere at either game.

My only regret is you didn't get to experience the Japanese VA which I frankly think puts it in another league. Now replay the game, fight Izumi, duck-races and complete the Fang-mei side quest.

You pledged $500 for the sequel to a game that you didn't even bother finishing?

Sounds p stupid tbh.

Um no, a lot of people have donated who are touched by the cause and have not beat the game. It's like donating to a charitable event to help a happy outcome.
