RTTP: Steven Universe

It was probably a year or less since I tried getting into Steven Universe, watching episode 1 to 4 and they didn't really hook me. Probably the animation looking a bit rough. I mean look at this:

Then a few weeks ago, I heard the show was getting cancelled or something. There I go thinking, "Show must be really bad to be cancelled at one season". I even went to see the background of the show, created by a writer of Adventure Time(a show that I will never understand or follow) Rebecca Sugar who apparently got nominated for a few Awards for her time on AT.

With my curiosity high, I decided to try to get into SU at episode 5...and from then I was hooked and already up to date. The animation was much more better, the art much more 'fixed' for lack of a better term.

First off, the cast. There is not one character I dont like in SU. Not one, all of the Crystal Gems, Steven's friends, heck even side characters are pretty interesting and likeable. Maybe Ronaldo would probably be the least likable character of the show but even then, he's still not that bad. Based on ep 1 to 4, I honestly thought Steven would be annoying and utterly unlikeable but thankfully I was wrong. He's a caring son to his father and care takers, pretty independent, funny at times and pretty smart.

Then the music, goodness, the music. Its all just so well made and hard not to like, especially considering how heavily video gamey it sounds like. Heck, after finishing Transistor and grabbing the soundtrack of it and SU, playing them in a playlist, it was sometimes a bit difficult to remember which sountrack was for what.

Now, the most important aspect that has me hooked into SU is the drips of information regarding Steven and the gems. Each IIRC episode gives tidbits regarding Steven's powers, mother and the past of the gems. Leaving small enough bits to reveal a piece of a bigger puzzle. Are the gems really protectors of earth, is Steven's mother actually alive, why do the gems have no eyebrows, etc.

Maybe I'm overselling the show but to me, its really good. The only other show I would recommend of the same level is Gravity Falls. Both have great characters, great stories and a sense of mystery to their characters and settings. Give it a watch if you havent but not at ep 1 to 4.

Also Pearl current design looks so much better than her weird ballerina skirt thing.

... Steven Universe wasn't canceled. In fact, it has an order for 104 episodes. Still, glad to see you came to like the series. Are you caught up?

And when talking about Steven Universe animation, this is mandatory:

I dunno, I got about as far as you did the first time and I found the characters supremely obnoxious. I couldn't force myself to watch more than a handful of episodes.

Much like Adventure Time I highly advise everyone here to watch all the Connie episodes much like the Marcelline episodes. They are consistently great and are a great jumping point in the series. The animation started rather rough but season 2 has been aces thanks to a noticibly higher budget and talent getting used to the animation.

Can't post a better clip of the above gif because everything connected to it is a HUGE spoiler.

Season 2 has done a fantastic job at developing the characters we have met and my god nearly every episode has been gold.

yep the show is seriously amazing. wasn't that into it when it first started airing either, but my girlfriend made me catch up and it's one of my favourite shows now. love the world building they've been doing in season 2.

Steven Universe is pretty great. Cartoon Network has a really good set of shows at the moment, Over the Garden Wall was amazing and is Clarence still being made? That show was also good.

Ah, the cat episode was all kinds of messed up towards the end. Like wtf levels, especially with the animation up there. Really dig those kinds of moments where a show like this can get dark at times. Like the episode where Steven handles aging.

And yeah all caught up, looking forward to that Winter themed episode when I have the time. I saw a tweet about SU moving to a deathslot or something so I assumed it was getting cancelled. Also CN had better not cancel this show, its just so interesting than whatever slog they're pumping out now, like that Uncle Grandpa show.

This show is SO GOOD and it just keeps getting better.

I mean, fuck.

Yeah, recently, the On The Run episode was just, woah. Really helped made Amethyst likable and understandable. Also Ronaldo was right. They really know to foreshadow future episodes/plots.

The writers and animators have well stepped up their game since the first four episodes. For example

Which episodes, if you mind me asking, cause if it was 1 to 4, pretty understandable. After those though, they IMO dont seem that much 'obnoxious'.

I loved those! That was done by the Supervising Director of the series, Ian Jones-Quartey because episodes like Cheeseburger Backpack were being made back before the show had a full crew. Since SU's a board-driven show, each artist's individual style inevitably leaks into the drawings on-screen of the characters.

Keeps things interesting for me, though I've never cared for Hellen's work, who's been added to the crew since Season 1B started with House Guest.

Those are different animators, though. Ian's style just tends to be unique and cartoony. Makes his one of the easiest to spot out when he does some work on an episode (which he still does, but not to the extent of Cheeseburger Backpack).

Oh man, The Swordfighter I remember seeing that episode and wondering how THAT made it on a kids TV show. Amazing.

It takes a bit to warm up to Steven early on. He tends to create about every mess he's in but he finds a way out of it and by season 2 he is much more mature. The episodes are relatively short so you can probably power through and get to some good episodes rather quickly that will give you a good reason to keep watching. Heck Cat Fingers and Bubble Buddies (Connie's first episode) are episodes 6 and 7 in the series.

Also, Holy shit at the above. Goes to show how much the art style has improved since the early outings.

Why do people keep saying it's currently on season 2? Wikipedia says it was renewed for a season 2 but season one is 52 episodes and so is season 2. According to wiki we are still in season 1.

I say it because halfway through there is a small arc that is clearly supposed to be a finale for season 1. Not to mention the differences between the first half and the back half are REALLY noticeable. Cleaner art style and animation. Much more mature plotlines. TONS of character development. Etc. Etc.

We are still in Season 1, but it was originally meant to be 26 episodes, which is also the number of episodes the show was announced under. It's also likely that the 2-parter Mirror/Ocean Gem special was originally meant to serve as a Season finale. However, much later it was announced the show received a pickup for another 26 episodes, bringing the total of S1 episodes to 52 (then later renewing the show for a 2nd season of 52).

Internally the episodes currently airing are known as Season 1B, effectively turning our past two-parter into a mid-season finale instead.

I really love this show. I havent seen the early eps in forever so maybe those are different but the writing is so strong now they could cut out the larger lore stuff (which is cool btw! learning more about the gems is rad) and just have it be about these character's relationships with each other and I would still enjoy it.

Its also a show that I just love to rewatch going frame by frame. Any Lars heavy episode is guaranteed to have some great cartoony animation

Episodes like Island Adventure and Beach City Horror Club were both Lars-heavy and featured the work of Raven M. Molisee, who's the main supplier of that fun cartoony style used on a lot of his facial expressions. She was also a storyboarder on Ed, Edd, n' Eddy and it really shows.

Oh, and Steven Universe is doing a crossover with Uncle Grandpa.

Steven Universe may be the best show on cartoon network right now.

That's a big statement, but I think it might be true.

Yeah, was surprised they showed
Pearl being stabbed. Even showing the sword right in her abdomen(?) Good thing out of it was Pearl got a much better design.

Huh, thats pretty cool that they switch up every so often, gives a bit of variety in sublte ways. Seems like I wont enjoy Ian's time on the show, which seems to have stopped now according to IMDB. I really didnt seem to enjoy his take on SU. That or the animation before a full studio thing.

I only got to episode 3. The show was just too manic for me to keep watching.

Yeah, during the early eps basically 1-4, they werent that interesting or likeable but I highly recommend watching episode 5 and onwards.

Hm, based on the posts in this thread maybe I'll give it another shot.

Do it, it gets better with each episode, it really really does.

Is it wrong to hope that this should not happen because honestly, I tried watching UG and it just seems to be random for the sake of being random. It better just be a filler episode.

Steven Universe is great. It reminds me of adventure time back when it knew what it was doing. it's a cartoon that doesn't talk down to kids, and that means a lot.

Not going to be canon. That's how I'm going to deal with it. Not canon.

SU has grown into a great show. It's funny, exciting at times, and relationships between the characters are top notch. Connie and Steven are awesome. They are doing some really unique things (especially with episodes like Alone Together).

My kids and I love it.

Just caught up to the latest ep. and gotta say yeah these recent eps. have been great. Lots of deep stuff.
I like how it's about the kid sidekick and they still keep it fun and entertaining.
Steven's a child and we get to see verything as the view point of said child.

Actually he's the Supervising Director of the series! He doesn't board nearly to the extent of Cheeseburger Backpack (which was mainly done since that episode was before the crew was fully formed) anymore but his work does still appear very regularly in the episodes, similar to Rebecca. Off the top of my head I remember his style used in a scene in the recent Lion 3 episode.

It was finished a few months ago. Only Ian's talked about it so far as far as I know but it seems the crew's happy with it.
