RTTP: Super Mario Galaxy 2. Harder than I remember?

So I decided to try a bit of this yesterday. Last I played was around its original release. I had 47 stars, way more than I thought I did (thought I was only around the 10-20 mark).

What a slog it was just to get the 2nd star from that upside down world. My next nightmare was the springy ability in that bullet bomb world with lava. Absolute travesty, I ran out of lives twice.

Is this game really that hard or do I just need to get used to Wii controls and the game again? Though now that I think back I could've sworn there was much discussion of how much less hand holdy this was compared to its predecessor.

Note that this is on the back of a bit of Crash Bandicoot 1 & 2, so I'm not exactly lacking in platforming experience at the moment.

Everytime I see RTTP, I see 'Rate to the Party'. As in, "Did you Rike it?"

edit: Don't know about Mario Galaxy 2. I haven't returned to that since I beat it. Never had any trouble with it though. Good stuff, except for those lousy looking space clouds. Man, those look bad.

I remember finding it too easy towards the end of the game, more so than Galaxy 1... until the GMG daredevil run of course. I can't remember what the early hours are like.

Return to the party.
Also no, is not that hard, aside from the last stage, but that one is just too long with no checkpoints

Oh god, I thought I was the only one

I got 120 stars on SMG1 when it came out and when I went to finally play SMG2 a few months ago I did find it quite a bit harder. There were two main reasons for this for me. 1) There are some new abilities that require very fine control. In particular that power up that makes you run really fast I had a really hard time controlling with the nunchuck. 2) You could fall to your death a lot more. In SMG1 there were a lot of levels where gravity meant you couldn't fall to your death. In SMG2, very early on there were levels where you were forced to speed run and not fall off.

I actually got really frustrated and moved on to something else. SMG1 is one of my favorite games of the generation, so that made me pretty sad. Hopefully I will go back and give it another shot.

3D Land is way too much easier. Even the Special worlds are easy with a few challenging levels.

Galaxy 2 is better rounded. 3D Land makes Galaxy 2 look harder too (specially played back to back).

Agreed. If you take out the hidden levels at the end Galaxy 2 is a lot harder.

That said it's also a game you improve on as you go, I really struggled with some levels when I first played them (Stone Cyclone stands out) but when it came to replaying them for later stars I found them much easier.

Naturally that came with practice so it makes sense it will be harder when you return to the game.

I guess I don't remember the first chunk of it at least being too bad. I think some of the later stars were pretty tricky but largely not as hard as the hardy stars in SMG. To be fair though I didn't do the green stars in either game.

Wait, I thought LTTP was Link to the Past, as in reminiscing an old game. Woah

Please tell me you guys at least found the chimp challenges hard. If not, you people are superhuman geniuses.

They were a bit challenging (I loved them because I used to love jumping on enemies like that in SMW).

Some of those quick challenges were tough. The comet in which you had to use rainbow Mario to kill Spinies fast (on the second level in world 1), the one were you kill all the crabs as rock Mario, and the breaking boxes challenge come to mind.

Even the cosmic clones were tougher (and started showing up on the second star in the game) in Galaxy 2 than in 3DL, specially since they formed way quicker (3DL's clone took forever to form).

I remember it being pretty darn hard in the end there. I don't remember my star count, but I think around halfway the galaxies begin to be pretty crazy.

I think the difficulty might have been the reason I didn't finish it when it came out. I probably got stuck, couldn't be bothered, then left it for a bit and just ended up forgetting about it due to other games.

Not that I'm saying it's a bad thing, this is fantastic, I regret not getting back to it sooner!

I remember it being really tough in the end too. The final star took me quite a while.

By the way, best game ever.

I remember dying a bunch in the Flip-Swap Galaxy. Crazy how that was in the first world. It was very evil of them to mess with your muscle memory like that.

Aside from that, I didn't really die that much; aside from the Flip-Out Galaxy, and the obligatory Grandmaster Galaxy.

I really wanted the
Boss Blitz Galaxy
to have a Daredevil comet. I'm such a masochist :P

The main game is easy. It only gets hard with some of the comet levels and challenges. I guess you just need to get back into the groove?

well It's been ages since I beat the game and but I didn't have any trouble with it save for a few levels but nothing that frustrating imo, well but that might be me as I am an avid platformer fan and when I start a new Mario game I usually stop playing any other game until I get a 100%

Am I the only one who thought The Chimp's challenges were super easy?

I actually thought the game was a pretty smooth ride, on the whole. Probably a step up above Galaxy 1, where the hardest part of the game was wrestling the camera into cooperation at times.

Come to think of it, that's probably the main reason why Galaxy 2 featured flatter courses. Keeping track of Mario on those planetoids in 1 was a pain.

I remember not finding it too bad, the only course I didn't do was the asteroid on the Grandmaster Galaxy because I couldn't be bothered getting all the required star bits.

I don't remember having too much trouble getting 120 stars, except maybe with a few of them. I'm currently doing the green stars though (started doing them a long time ago, then stopped playing, and recently started again), and some of those take some serious platforming skills. Fun stuff.

Looking back, even though SMG2 is the better game (gameplay and level wise), there were things that the original just did better. Galaxy 1 had more personality and the cut scenes gave it a better feel of adventure (and watching Bowser regretfully walking on a ledge as his galaxy crumbled was neat). Also the final Bowser battler was both cooler and more challenging.

And the music was better.

Rosalina>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Purple star thing.

Galaxy 2 is definitely tougher than the original. Galaxy 2 probably didn't feel as hard as it was to me because it's so fun. Having fun and failing is so much easier to take.

That final battle was such a letdown. They go and compose that super energetic piece and then it's over in under a minute.

Other than 1 level (the one with the moving blocks where you have to slow down time), I never found it very difficult. It's still my favorite Mario game though!

It's much harder than any other 3D Mario in later levels, but once you get used to the controls and everything you probably won't have any major brick walls.

I remember Grandmaster Galaxy taking some time, but that's about it.

You must be almost perfect at the game then.

One being good doesn't mean the game is a breeze for most though. After all, the game isn't trying to be one of those rom hacks.

Gotta admit there's plenty of tricky challenges and levels in there. I'm sure something like the Stone Cyclone Galaxy wasn't a cake walk for many.

That's a pretty bad example, since anyone who did a 100% clear of Galaxy already has experience with that stage.

The challenge of the level is completely different though. Like entirely. The fact it was a reused level wasn't my point.

Go back and play the two and tell me if it's the same experience.

The prankster comet in Beach Bowl was a double speed version of Stone Cyclone, so they would be pretty similar to someone who played both, yes. The time stop switches were a fun addition to it, but it wasn't radically changed.

The big difference, if I'm remembering right, is that you had to follow a certain path to get the silver stars instead of just reaching the end, but for the most part you're still traversing the level in the same way, just avoiding the shortcuts you might've used in Galaxy 1.

You even have blocks to stand on. That's change enough to make it harder (besides double speed).

Maybe you found it easy when you first played it; I didn't, and I was very familiar with the Galaxy 1 version too.
