Rumor 101: Perfect Dark 2 - Xbox 360’s Next Humungous Killer App

PDZ was a disgrace to Rare's FPS legacy.

How do you go from dominating the console FPS genre with Goldeneye and Perfect Dark to PDZ?!

I'll tell you why: They're not the same anymore. The talent they lost to Free Radical coupled with Martin Hollis leaving to Zoonami (lulz) crippled the dream team of Goldeneye fame.

I'm not holding my breath for PD2. Hopefully they can prove me wrong.

PDZ was a damn trainwreck. They had the makings of a female James Bond, and it turned into something I dont even recognize as Perfect Dark.

Perfect Dark had it all. Will Rare be able to return to thier glory days? I am currently playing Kameo, and my gut tells me no.

Even thought I hated PDZ because of how foolish some of the character looked (like puppets from Team America: World Police) and sounded (like Woody Allen) I saw the potential if they had been given more time. I can see it as 360 next killer app with some tinkering. Just look at Kill Zone 2, it went from mediocre to the PS3's Gears of War.

Also this talk of 360s 2008 release list being limited is becoming rubbish day by day.

- Remove the roll
- No more sluggish controls. God, I like to play the game, but it feels like I'm moving around in molasses
- Put it back inside. I'm sorry, but all of the wide open spaces with NO direction on where to go (necessitating the blue/yellow arrows) did nothing for me. Make it clear where to be moving along during the game.
- Make the guns actually kill people. Blame Halo single player all you want, but when I shoot aliens in Halo, I can actually kill them. In PDZ, it seemed like I was never killing people appropriately.
- BIGGEST FAUX PAS: NO. MORE. HIRED. VOICE. ACTORS. Go back to the Rare voice acting. Get Eveline Fischer back as Joanna Dark. Jo is British, she is NOT FUCKING AMERICAN.

Now lets hope they do a better job on the narritive. Not one of Gears strong points. I didn't realize this until trying to replay it, how bad the script was.

Only way this is a killer app is if the guys at Free Radical make this. Zero was terrible.

Uhh the guys at Free Radical would first have to prove they can acutally make a "killer app". They haven't so far.

The way people throw it out, "killer app" has absolutely no meaning anymore.

PD was a safer Killer App than Halo on the Xbox IMO.

The fact they fucked up bad and still sold a shitload of copies shows how much of a KA it was. If it turned out even half as good as GE007, it would have sold just as much IMO.

PDZ got a bigger hammering because it was shit. Imagine if Halo 3 was of a similar quality. MS would have been finished. Instead Rare is finished. I'll give them one more chance with PD3 though cos im a fan.

Waste of time, and money. Let rare do something creative instead of shoehorning a now bad FPS developer into making yet another FPS for your system!

And if this is just being announced now, don't expect it before 2010 the way Rare works. I would be surprised if this is even a 360 project.

PDZ was an awful game with sloppy, floaty controls and boring levels, not to mention bad multiplayer design and a mess of unbalanced weapons. I have no reason to think Rare can pull this franchise out of the hole it's in.

Hopefully they'll prove me wrong, but I don't feel good about this one bit.

Time Splitters with its shitty story is still tons better than PDZ.

The goldeneye team is NOT with FR. I think they all seperated and what you have left is a collection of people that all worked on PD/GE but all fragmented into different dev studios.

Rare PD team done a great job with multiplayer (far more intelligent and satisfying than any TS game) and i guess the single player goes to FR (which put together decent singleplayer levels and story )

And on a technical level, Rare are still one of the best in the business

An official announcement is due sometime during the latter part of next year.
We have to wait until late next year for just the announcement? I have trouble getting excited for games that are so damn far away.

PDO was allright, nothing to set the world afire though. Like someone mentioned on page two,if they would ditch the godamn trial and error mission designs then we might have something here.

I liked the game's art, music, and level designs in PDO,but yeah I do agree their gameplay structure needs revising. No more trial and error game play. And for the record, this style of play was always in Golden Eye and Perfect Dark and to me those aren't the markings of a AAA game because that style of play has always bothered me. Now hold up,I'm not calling those games garbage, just not AAA is all. I just think those games are now looked upon with rose colored glasses because it had more charm and nostalgia because they had Nintendo involved. Thats not to say the game's weren't good, but AAA? PDO had the same problems the other two games had, noone liked to start missions completely over or way back to a mid level starting point because they got one one of the objectives along the mission wrong and failed. And having to set the game on some easier play setting to eliminate some of the required objectives in order play through the game wasn't nearly as satisfying.

Kameo still is Rare's best since they left Nintendo. I haven't played Viva Peniata though, still need to pick this one up. I wish this press release were about a Kameo sequel more than anything.:/

PDZ wasnt THAT bad of a game.

I mean, it had some good aspects, like the system they used for how many weapons you could hold was nice (you had 4 slots, handguns took one slot, a rocket launcher/sniper took 3, SMG took 2, that thing) and it had bots! and...umm, coop was cool in that you werent going the same path as the other person.

other than those things it was pretty bad.

i loved PDZ multi, it was very solid, packed with action and strategy and filled with options

single was ok too.

it was leaps and bounds better than another game that's about to get a sequel ending with the number 2.

then again, people aren't pinning the eventual success of the Xbox 360 on Perfect Dark 2.

Not this shit again. Stop doing so many things at the same time RARE. Just finish, polish Banjo first and then start with a new project. PDZ was in development since the NGC and still they had to rush it out for launch. Some of the stuff in the screenshots wasn't even in the game, they'll probably use the same engine and build some new environments add a few shaders and be done with it. I don't think they're going to start from scratch, that would take them at least 5 years.

lose the arrows and design some decent levels.

Add bots with individual personalities+ bot Challeneges and get blood splatter back in the game.

PD0 is the 360's Lair. Fundamentally flawed, broken games that were supposed to be AAA. I do not understand how there are Defense Forces for these games...but then I remember there were people who enjoyed and played the hell out of ET on the Atari 2600 as well.

"if you have problems getting ET out of the pit, you just suck at playing games because you are too lazy to practice enough to get good at the controls."

Microsoft console is not dead in 2008, They are just putting a steady stream of games unlike 2007 which have 3 GOTY contenders all exclusive to a console, thats unprecedented.

2008 will have lesser BIG games but a good amount of them

Microsoft is saving money so they can make a profit , that is why they are not developing more 1st party games than Sony or nintendo at this moment and assessing thier options. They want the 360 to not only be profitable this quarters but ALL the quarters that follow hence forth.

Microsoft KNOWS that 360 has a good rep with 3rd party developers who are willing to make 360 the base platform for thier development.

Microsoft is ALSO saving money for thier next console.

the 360 is already 2 years old and Microsoft does not want the 360 to go more than 5 years. They KNOW that 1 year before thier competition is the ONLY thing that saved 360 this generation and it will likely save them again if they launch thier console ahead of thier competition.

You can bet a good dollar that Microsoft is already in negotiations with IBM and AMD to deliver technologies for them for the next console and you can also bet that Microsoft's next console will have a hybrid drive which runs both HD DVD and Bluray

Different situation there. The first Perfect Dark was good, while the first Killzone was regarded as being not so good. Then each series had a follow up, with Killzone: Liberation being good, and the second Perfect Dark: Zero being regarded as not so good.

WTF? If Killzone liberation is the same thing as Killzone is, Viva Pinata was a good game. IRONY back on.

Damn you crushed! Good eye.

I think you got something wrong here...Microsoft is not saving money, they are losing it :lol

1) the first Perfect Dark was a sequel too...

2) the good followup to Killzone wasn't a FPS

I actually enjoyed PDZ MP, through extensive tinkering you could get the controls to the realm of "Decent." I had some intense, fun 2vs2 matches in the Counterstrike like mode.

Also, your memories all fail you, Rare's descent started right after GE. After an army of shitty platformers, Perfect Dark wasn't that great either. Cool ideas, but the weapons were terrible, and the maps (especially the MP maps) were even worse. Combine it all with single digit framerates and you get a game that doesn't hold Golden Eye's jock.
