If Amazon gave free lifetime prime, this would be an extremely good deal.

People kept pissing on people getting touchpads about how awesome the Amazon Tablet was gonna be and how we would regret buying it.

Purchase Vindicated as Amazons tablet is a suped up ereader

oh, ok. I didn't follow it that closely. I was speaking in more general terms.

the touchpad is an amazing bit of kit for $99. I don't know how any could dispute that.

It sounds like a sort of tablet version of a Kindle. If you want a "real" tablet I would go for something else.

This could be huge for the mass market though that buys kindles and uses amazon. They won't care about the camera, or pure android experience etc.

EDIT: I would buy it if I decided one day to get a Kindle. Problem is I might as well just buy a fully featured tablet and use the Kindle app there.

Exactly what I thought they would do. Forked Android, Amazon only for purchases. Kindle branding. Underwhelming specs.

EDIT: I left off the specs part.

I don't really see the point to it. You're getting less functionality than you would expect for that sort of device.

I mean the e-ink kindle has a point to it.

Agreed. I really want to buy a Kindle 3 right now, but I'm holding off to see if they are going to roll out a new version.

Have there been advances in eink recently or something?

As a Kindle 3 owner, they're pretty awesome, so you shouldn't feel like you're buying something that is not worth it. It's absolutely worth it. Best purchase I've made all year.

But obviously if I'm hyped to hear about the next generation, I don't begrudge you holding off a little bit :p

Well, there's eInk Triton, which is the generation after eInk Pearl (which is used in the current Kindle) and does colour. I was also thinking more robust screens, since the screens are prone to damage. And better battery life. Maybe make the device even thinner. I dunno. Clearly the Kindle 3 is still very usable, but I'm also interested in seeing where it goes.

Not a single thing about that OP excites me. Back to somehow praying my HP order somehow goes through for 99 bucks. I'd rather scrounge together a couple more bills and buy the ipad at that price. A lot of money for a bunch of meh.

You know it's underwhelming specs when the most exciting feature is free Prime.

Eh, on Apple you can use other services as long as the provider pays a 30% fee to Apple or sells from the browser. You can read Nook and Kindle e-books, and use Google apps. On this rumored device, providers have to pay Amazon a 80% fee and it's probably going to lock out Barnes and Noble and Google apps anyway.

This is why we can't have nice things. Amazon sure as shit better not be giving up on e-ink.
This is just an edition to the kindle line up.

What premium features could the 10" add? Stock Ice Cream Sandwich?

DOA

it needs to be top end at a reasonable price. Android 2x will no longer do for a tablet. No cameras? Small storage?

I know you're joking, I think I know you're joking, you are joking, you must be joking.

I agree. I haven't made a tablet purchase yet, partly because I was waiting for Amazon to jump in, and this news really is underwhelming. Guess I'll stick to my netbook + kindle combo.

Are people clamoring for better battery life on their kindles right now? I charge mine maybe once a month and use it every day like mad. I guess I have no point other than how blown away I still am at how amazing the battery life is on these things.

I just hope this opens up the Amazon App Store internationally when it launches.

Won't get it, since I already have a Nook Color filling in that form factor, but if I can benefit, that'd be just great.

If this is true, I'm baffled at what this thing is supposed to be used for.

Negatives:
As an e-reader/kindle, it's worse than an existing kindle because it's backlit LCD instead of e-ink.
No Google Android market or Google Maps
6GB storage - this is the real dealbreaker for me. I have a 32GB iPad2 and 90% of that storage goes to apps. 6 is not enough, and I don't want to be managing games by deleting something in order to download something else. Even with cloud saves, this is far too low, unless they offer an option for expanded memory at a higher price.

Positives:
It's cheaper than an iPad by a ton.
The free Prime (is that for one year or lifetime membership?) is a huge incentive.
The smaller size puts it in a different category than the iPad. It could own the market at #2, and the form factor makes it more comfortable to hold while lying down.

If that's a lifetime membership to Amazon prime, I'll buy it day 1, even if it's a paperweight. If it's a one year subscription thrown in with the price of the tablet, I'd be tempted, but take a wait and see attitude to see what it's good for before diving in.

The fact that it's Android 2.x shouldn't really matter at all if Amazon is branching off the Android line pretty radically.

They can design the interface however they want it to, and really just limited by the API set available within 2.x...but there's nothing that I'm aware of in 2.x that would make it not able to do anything they generally wanted it to.

Amazon is just taking the free OS, repackaging it however they want and distributing it on their devices. The consumer won't know or care that it isn't running the latest version of Android. It'll be running the latest version of Android on Amazon...and Amazon will be the ones keeping the software up to date, not Google.

Seems sustainable to me assuming 2.x isn't gimped for other reasons I'm not aware of.

So... how is this any different compared to the Nook Color? Aside from the UI, of course.

You buy stuff from Amazon instead of Barnes & Noble.

EDIT: Who is this RubxQub guy? ;)

This is confusing. Previous rumors suggested that Amazon was planning on introducing both tablets and e-readers this year. Is this supposed to be the tablet or the e-reader?

The hardware sounds like tablet, but the software (specifically lack of Android market) sounds like e-reader.

Amazon appstore replaces Android Market, where they take a 80% cut of regular purchases.

I know this is The OT, but to bring some gaming side into it . . . since I'm pretty much completely sold on getting a PSVita I'm really not sure a 7" tablet is a niche I need filled once I have that (depending, of course, on the non-game software that runs on the Vita).

I'd much rather pair a PSVita with a 10" tablet if I'm going to have two devices like that plus a separate phone and an actual e-ink Kindle.

I was rather hoping Amazon would have a 10" tablet option, and would be rather disappointed if they didn't.

The free prime subscription makes it tempting since that's something I already pay every year for, but if it's only a free subscription for a year I'd rather make sure to get a device that actually fills a need I have.

Now give me the option to pay a slightly higher fee for a Prime membership and get one of the tablets for free, that's a prospect I could entertain.

Yeah it's pretty Amazing but imagine a Kindle that you don't need to charge because the battery lasts so long you've upgraded by the time it wears out.

I actually prefer Amazon's ecosystem over Apple.

So, if this is rumors true, I would rather invest on an Amazon tablet.
Except for video and apps, Amazon's ecosystem is a subset of the Apple ecosystem.

How far along is color e-ink? Anyone have any good links of a pictures of a device that uses it?

After using a kindle, I could never do long term reading on an LCD screen.

There are hybrids though... LCD + e-Ink... the e-Ink is activated when you start a book application. But it's not very good at the moment.

And apps, of course.

...but hell, you can you use your Amazon bucks to buy a toaster or a vibrator or a dog leash or aspirin...limitless!

Music they're solid, books obviously they murder. Movies and apps are going to be behind.

So you can buy books and music (what they are good at) for and use it on an iPad? You can also buy a toaster, vibrator, etc. from Amazon from an iPad.

They only have exclusivity on the things they are behind in...

don't see the point since it's not e-ink
A tablet with current e-ink technology would be pretty terrible, don't you think? Until e-ink has color and better refresh rates, LCD is still required for anything besides reading text.

6G isn't enough for apps and games. I had to upgrade to an ipad 2 32G from ipad 1 16G because of the amount of games i downloaded.

Will this amazon pad have netflix? probably not.

Zefah said:
Why? The reason you get a kindle is for the screen.

LCD is shit for reading books.
This x100000.

I don't get how people interchange the two.

Just give me kindle 4.

Have you used their video store?

Its so stupidly easy to use, tons of free content for Prime users, and it works well on most browsers (currently use it on my TouchPad)

On top of that, Amazon isnt blocked at my work, so I can use it freely
