Rumor: Apple to announce new iPhone and iPad mini on September 12th

If they actually deliver on the $200 price point, every other tablet maker is screwed. I can't wait to get one. Posted From my iPad 1

I wonder how much the cellular version would be. LTE hotspots are about $150 and their batteries are small. A LTE iPad mini for twice the price but more that 2x the battery life wouldn't be a bad investment.

It would not shock me if the iPad mini was wifi only just to keep the price points down.

You guys are still concerned about Apple not being able to meet competitors' prices even though they're using old ass tech, have the best supply chain, and have the best inventory management?

A more reasonable (but still ridiculous) argument would be wondering just how cheap this thing can be because of how good Apple has it. "$100!"

They will hit $199. It will probably come with 8 GB of space just to piss everyone off.

At $200 it's game over for the tablet industry. If Apple prices it that low and dominates the low-end I see a lot of OEM's pulling out of tablet market. Surface Pro is probably the only device different enough to carve out a niche.

It's not so much a matter of whether or not they can meet the prices, but whether it's necessary. It's going to sell extremely well at either price lol

8gb (if) at 200 should be expected. If they were to hit $200 at 16gb.....damn.

200 at 16gb and it's sold out from here to infinity.

But if they're re-designing the iPod there's no way they'll have an 8gb version. I guess it'll just be 16gb at 249. Which will still be perceived by the public as incredibly cheap.

What are you guys expecting to happen to the iPod line in terms of models dropped and price slashes?
Either nothing changes or they just kill it. No price changes or weird scaling.

Remember it is more expensive to put this same tech in a smaller package. The iPhone unsubsidized is more expensive than the iPad. People will just make the choice on whether they want an iPod or iPad mini.

I don't doubt them being able to hit the $200 point with their supply chain. Them actually delivering a device that is priced to destroy everyone else is just shocking. They will sell no matter what, but that $200 or less price is bad news for everyone else.

Agreed. I am very curious to see the bloodbath.

considering that the samsung/ Apple trial revealed that Apple has sold just around half as many iPod touches as iphones, I don't think they want to discontinue that product.

I think the 8GB ipod touch might drop to $170. the ipad mini launches at 250 (also 8 GB, I bet). they probably could hit 200, but I honestly don't think they need to in order to get enough people to buy one instead of the competition.

I suppose it could be killed. Might be a good reason to give it a big storage bump to justify its existence/price though.

I don't think they can drop the 8GB touch without removing a segment of the market that purchases music and apps (young kids with loving parents), so it'd be weird if it stayed at $199. Probably will drop to $150 and not get a large bump in specs.

I guess it's a good thing I have no interest in purchasing a tablet because it seems apple is only really interested in removing as much choice for consumers as possible in this segment.

While its certainly possible could hit the $199 price point, I don't think they should want to go low end with this unit. I would be more money on $249. If they did go $199, this would be the first time Apple went price parity with a competitor when they were controlling the market. As such, I have a hard time believing it. It is a very different market signal than Apple has given in the past and would signify that they are dropping their premium brand value (which would be insanely stupid) to compete on price with the "bottom feeders".

If they go $199, they are looking to clear out their near competitors entirely. Consume all the air from the space and force them out of the market. You can't reasonably go $150 in this market and even if you did, people will pay $50 more for an Apple product.

It's not Apple's fault everyone else sucks at making a competitive product.

Step yo game up manufacturers!

The iPad Cellular and iPhone (unsubsidized) are about the same price though.

At the most, $229. Wasn't the iPod touch this much at one point?

Posted on the last page but seriously good read on the iPad Mini from John Gruber:

I can see most of that making sense except for the thinness and weight part. The alleged leaked photos look thicker than the iPod touch.

Or maybe not… http://9to5mac.com/2012/08/14/these-purported-schematics-of-the-ipad-mini-now-appear-to-be-real/

Is there any hope to there being a fix to the "Other" capacity issue? It seems like every 2-3 months my iPhone has 4.5GB or more of Other data which is likely corrupt downloads, causing me to have to restore from backup. I wish that an iTunes sync would just wipe all of that stuff out.

So are there any targets or rumors or anything about the iPhone 5's power? Especially in comparison to other phones out on the market currently?

And what about storage sizes?

Do you ever look in "Usage" under "General" in the Settings app? Maybe some app there has a lot of cached data--so you can delete and reinstall the app specifically.

I do, and nothing really stands out. I've found luck in restoring from backups, but it always returns a few months later. I'm on a 16GB model, so space is fairly precious. Nothing I've done (aside from restoring) has ever made a significant dent to it though. I wish I could run Defrag or something, instead of restoring the entire phone.

If I ever get one of these - and I'm not sure I will, since I enjoy my bigger iPad - I hope there is an LTE version, because that may be a new niche for someone like me. My iPad never leaves the house and is wifi only, but a small portable one begs to be taken to more places, so it needs LTE.

i've noticed this too. restores dumps a bunch of stuff from my 'other' but it inevitably returns.

Some of it is cache stuff. Others stuff I imagine like emails.

$299 for 32gb (so about the same in £ for us) and I would be sold so hard. As a gaming device this will be better than it's big brother as it will be far easier to hold landscape.

If Apple successfully launches an iPad Mini... goddamn. They can sell anything. I thought an iPod Touch was an iPad Mini.

By that logic there is no market for the 13" Macbook, you know, with the whole 11" and 15" range and all that.

The difference in screen size is massive (from the touch to the suggested mini) and smaller tablets are a huge market to ignore.

iPod touch isn't a tablet. It isn't useful for reading books & comics, watching movies, writing documents, etc. All that is really useful on a 7-8 inch screen.

nothing. Size means not everyone will suddenly want an ipad mini. The ipod touch is a great way to get people that can't justify a high end smartphone (kids mainly) spending money in the apple ecosystem. Get them to download/buy a ton of apps, and that creates service stickiness so they'll stay with apple when they upgrade to a tablet or smartphone.

Very much this, it works too. I have an iPhone 4, so have a ton of apps / games that only work on iOS, when it comes to a 7" tablet this means an iPad mini would easily suit me better than an Nexus 7 or Fire, even at a cost premium.

I am super excited for the iPad mini. Is they hit the 200-250 range me and my girlfriend will most likely buy it. It just seems like the best portable solution to me. Also great to surf the web or check mails while at home. The lighter weight should also make it more usable as a Kindle replacement for me.

So will people buy this or wait for Retina?

and lol at people melting down over rumor renders.

I would love to wait for a Retina iPad mini, but I'm looking at getting a 7" tablet so if it is priced at $200 I will buy it anyways. When the Retina version comes out in a year I'll probably upgrade but not right away.

If they keep the iPad 2 resolution I don't know if it will really be necessary to get a retina display.

I think it will. the 1024 x 768 will give you the original iphone res of 163 ppi. it looks OK but it hardly impressive these days. in time, it'll move over to the pixel doubled res of the current ipad.

I often wonder if it is really the small screens size which is the driver or the smaller price that is the driver.

Resolution is only one aspect to how good a screen looks. One of the main reasons that the iPad 3 and the retina Macpook Pro screens look so much better than the iPhone 4/4S is because of the near perfect color accuracy, for example.

Bit of both? I know the 7" size is far better for reading / holding one handed, the iPad is not comfortable for prolonged use the same way.

I also read women liked the smaller tablets as they can chuck them in their bags and don't need to carry a seperate one (no idea where I read it or if it's actually true...).

Die shrunk A5 for better battery life?

That mock up doesn't seem that much smaller, but I person it's probably much more noticable - especially weight. Will the aspect ratio allow one handed use or is it a bit wide for that?

Since Apple had the die shrunk A5 in the stealth-updated iPad 2 this past March, I would think the iPad Air/Mini would be a perfect candidate for such a chip. Would certainly allow for better battery life, thinner profile due to battery reduction, etc.

Seriously, an iPad that is just a shade over the weight of the keyboard Kindle would be utterly fantastic. I'm pumped if all this pans out.

I really, really hope they run with a 16GB, 32GB, 64GB lineup since I will likely get a 64GB if offered, but would settle for a 32GB. I just don't want a 8GB, 16GB lineup...I need more than 16GB.

8 is really too small - its like the original xbox tard pack. You'd have maybe 6GB free which is fuck all really. Even 16GB on an ipad is borderline.
