"We are hearing some chatter this morning about Apple Computer (AAPL) that we can't confirm, but found interesting nonetheless. The rumor is that Disney (DIS) could buy a stake in AAPL's iTunes, which could then be a first step towards an iTunes IPO. This is a new one to us, and this type of AAPL/DIS rumor could be motivated by the fact that Steve Jobs will be on the DIS board following its acquisition of PIXR. Some of the initial feedback we heard on this was skeptical, so again, just passing this one along," Briefing.com reports.

An iTunes spin-off from Apple Computer? Would it take the iPod line with them as well? Why Apple would spin-off iPod when it's their most profitable venture? It makes no sense. iTunes alone doesn't seem profitable enough to be it's own company. I don't think any of this seems right.

This is a great idea - iTunes will be the dominant digital distribution company in the future - far different from the software/hardware core competencies that Apple is known for.

Of course Apple will still own like 80% of the company. But spinning it off and giving it seperate management will only help Apple. The boost in value of the business they get from spinning it off will also make them richer and undoubtedly please share holders.

Nintendo did this with Pokemon. It helped them worry less about expanding the Pokemon business and let them get back to the core hardware/software they are good at.

Bravo Jobs! if true
