Rumor: Even More PSP2 and/or 4000 Rumors: Getting Crazier By The Minute

Playing Resistance Retribution on my PS3 with the Dual Shock is a fantastic experience. Setting it up, however, sucks ass. You currently have to:
1. Connect your PSP to your TV
2. Connect your PSP to your PS3
3. Set your PSP to output to your TV
4. Change your TV to the PSP input
5. Boot up R:R on your PSP
6. Change your TV to the PS3 input
7. Boot up R2 on your PS3
8. Turn the option in R2 to PSP mode
9. Change your TV back to the PSP input.

A better solution would be an 'all-in-one' PS3 to PSP docking cable that made your PSP display on your PS3's TV setting AND let you control ALL PSP games with the Dual Shock all in one motion. Would be perfect for me as I only play PSP games in my house.

The markets for iPhone and PSP are completely different. PSP is for hardcore gamers that want a console experience on the go, iPhone games are for casuals. If anything, the iPhone threatens the DS.

for watching movies sure... for gaming, iphone is more serious threat for casual gaming (DS) than hardcore (PSP)
DS is bigger than PSP on both "hardcore" and casual gaming.

This shit ain't gonna happen people. PSP hasn't even hit 130 yet, why waste all that R&D so quickly when the PSP hasn't even had it's run in? It's only 4 years old people.

I thought it was common knowledge by now that, there isn't a PSP2 coming but rather an

upgraded version of the PSP, PSP lite if you would.

Where are people getting all these rumors about PSP2 and DD only and such from ?

you know what they REALLY need to do?

MOVE THE HEADPHONE INPUT

Who in their right mind put it on the bottom - it makes the psp impossible to rest on a treadmill without the headphones tilting the screen

And while we are at it - move the hold button OFF the power button

Baby steps people! Before we ask Sony to cram more stuff on there lets fix what is there first

And another thing. PSP2 better launch with mandatory trophies for all games.

And they better be compatible with my PS3 trophy list! :P

This is such a random yet completely valid complaint.

Thats the only time you recall him being right ?

He was right about:

-MAG's official announcement. He confirmed it before it was even announced. I called bullshit on him then and when it was all true, I became a sin-believer ever since.
-God War 3 official reveal
-Some Home Stuff
-Some Killzone 2 Information before the public knew
-..And I guess PS3 firmware updates.
Well, it looks like I'll be getting a PSP2 this Fall. O_o

Wow, I missed this quote.

It looks like I'll be buying a PSP2 this fall...

What about UMD games though? Full digital distribution of back-log games coming to the PSN too?

I'm against the fence on this, but I would change my mind if Sony release some sort of umd driver for the PSP2.

This is the same Sony that took back b/c, so I wouldn't be holding my breath, but I do hope that they release a UMD drive where you connect through USB and rip games straight to the internal memory/Mem Stick duo.

----

The new problem is how much memory is this bad boy going to have? They need to have some standard so people don't have to buy memory stick duo at the start. Hopefully 16 gigs since PSP games are rather large.

At this point (recently announced games) I don´t care anymore.

If it´s a BETTER PSP with a better analog solution I might buy it. If it´s a PSP2, I´ll buy it.

If it´s an PSP phone, my dad will buy it. When I showed him my imported phat PSP he commented on the awesome screen and that he´d buy one if it could be used as a phone or a GPS.

So either way Sony will get money from my family :lol

And I mostly game at home or during a train ride, so having two systems wouldn´t be that bad.

welp, Sin having spoken on it being closer to truth than we think leaves me no choice but to start saving up for this

... my man.

yeah, i would have ignored this if it wasnt for Sin's post

There are still people who would not like EVERYTHING to be distributed online. I would like a system of online and UMD game distribution concurrently. There would be certain items i would rather get on UMD (Large games that would eat a whole 1.5 GB of my small 4GB-8GB memcard or just not having to deal with a freakin fridge system period, and I dont have regular access to the internet at all times to download larger titles, whereas on the iPod its not so bad because the games are smaller and simpler to install in nature). Digital Distribution only would be a headache of this nature of gaming device at this time period.

i think as far as consumer perception is concerned, which we all know Sony is SO graceful with, they would be making a mistake calling a UMD-less, touch screen, dual-analog PSP a PSP-4000 and not the PSP2.

it's too much of a step forward to lump it in as still being in the 1st gen family of the device. sure, there was no mention of improved battery, or a faster CPU or more ram or anything, but those 3 key properties of this new version are more than enough to deserve the title PSP2.

i would be okay with PSPgo or something like that, and make it seem like the hipster version of the original PSP, and then save more upgrades for PSP2.

EDIT:
Sin said:

well then im going to just go with it all being correct SANS THE TOUCH SCREEN. :D

why do they even need UMD anymore. The other rumour had data being stored on flash drives. High capacity flash tech seems much cheaper now. Seems like the best idea to me.

Well, if the updated version of PS1 became PSone...

Should the updated version of PSP should become PSpee?

FUCK YA x2
Sony keeps on fucking with the only exercise I get. I totally blame my over weight fatness on this.

I don't think PSP really has to compete with iPod.

First, anybody can get a PSP (just pay the MSRP price of it). It is sold everywhere (gray market or regular one) and has a standard set of game controllers.

To get an iPod, you will have to pay a freaking lot of money (compared to PSP), there are countries (like mine), where is not even sold, most probably you will have to sign a phone contract to get one, and good luck trying to play some game genres (fighting games, i.e.) with a touch pad.

No real competition here, gentlemen. iPod is in another different category.

I agree... this would be great. Also let me play psp demos I download on the ps3!

Where else would you put it though? Side would get in the way of actually holding the PSP (which you do far more often than setting it on a treadmill). Putting in on the top would just be stupid.

Move it like 1 cm to the left and get rid of that clip, just like how the power cord is I believe - then at least its not right on the bottom

Or keep moving left it so its on the bottom half of the curved side like the power button is

Or give me bluetooth

Or speakers that don't suck

Really, anything is better then the current location

Too many conflicting rumors. The PSP definitely needs to add touchscreen, but I lean more towards the rumors that Sony execs stupidly believe they can combat the DS and iPhone with shoulder button-only games.

PS2 Slim --> PSP Slide w

Have they changed this since the PSP-1000? My PSP has the headphone jack in the little indent at the very left just like the power socket is on the far right.

I want a psp that focuses on being a game system, no more swiss army knives. Sony hasn't been able to keep it simple for years now. It leads to them running in ten different directions and typically it hurts the product in the end, in its development, delivery and ultimately commercially.

Isn't this exactly what Nintendo just did with the DSi? Aside from the downloadable game store, most of the new functionality (camera, music player, Web browser) is focused on other aspects of entertainment besides games.

If Nintendo has just reached the point of adding multimedia features after all these years, then I certainly wouldn't expect Sony to start subtracting multimedia features now.

Remember, in all likelihood, if UMD is taken out it will be replaced by games on mem sticks. Retail is NOT going away.

That's certainly a possibility. The games could be sold on read-only Memory Sticks with perhaps a small amount of rewriteable flash memory for saving data. This would serve as PSP's "cartridge" format and could be compatible with existing PSP devices as well as the next-generation system. It would keep retailers happy, and also ease the transition from the old PSP to the next-gen model without UMD drive.

One potential feature that I haven't really seen anyone mention is some sort of persistent buddy list for instant messaging. Imagine if you could log into PSN from anywhere and message your friends. The problem is that Wi-Fi still isn't prolific enough for "anywhere access" to happen, so they'd have to do something like have it log onto the cellular network, preferably like the Amazon Kindle where there's no added cost to the user. The problems with that is that communication speed is slower than Wi-Fi, and the added hardware needed for this would increase the cost of manufacturing.

This pisses me off to no end. So many times I've quit out of a movie or game trying to flick it from the HOLD position.

Without a doubt! Sony should implement this immediately, PSP2 or no. Better late than never.

Maybe it's just me, but games without trophies feel like they're missing something. I play almost all of my games twice now just to get trophies not because I'm obsessed, but because it's genuinely fun and challenging to do.

and if you DO put it into 'hold' for some reason, you're pretty much guaranteed to accidentally turn off the system by pushing it up out of 'hold'. ugh.

Yeah...In my opinion achievements/trophies were the best thing to happen to games this gen.

I'm actually having a bit of a hard time getting into Resistance Retribution because they don't have trophies (I wish that wasn't true...but it is).

This man speaks the truth. Full PSP games would eat up a mem stick very quickly. All the games I've downloaded are less than one gig.

If it is more expensive, I don't want it.

Otherwise, I'm interested.

But only if it's not more expensive.

before launching a touch screen psp,
sony needs to offer a more affordable devkit solution so that indie developers don't have to purchase $2000 debug units.

Part of the iPhone's appeal is the vast amount of application available for it.

Sony can barely upload their own PSOne back catalog at a reasonable rate
