Rumor: Facebook to buy Opera

Opera completely stagnated after Speed Dial in 2007. Don't care what happens to it any more, they got my money and I had a great time with it in the early 00s.

It kinda missed the extension train though. I mean it took them until this year to actually say they're going to support "real" extensions and not widgets/Unite apps.

Because for the longest time, the things people got extensions to do in Firefox, Opera did as standard.

That's kind of like the "Why doesn't the iPhone support third party apps?" position Apple fanboys took in 2007. It's not a complete indefensible position, but third parties can always do much more amazing things and fill so many other needs you don't even know about.

I sort of agree, Unite was like their last hurrah and it went over like a wet fart. A shame because it had potential, but it was pretty much a proprietary thing in a time when web openness was becoming more apparent.

Yup, throughout my entire usage of Opera, I've only used three extentions, QR Code, Send to Phone, and imghove(you still owe me this andrex http://i.imgur.com/LLShC.gif).

The first two got deprecated really quick when Opera added the "open in chrome" function, since I have those setup properly on my chrome that's logged into my account.

Everything else has always been built in as options.

Oh yeah, image hover. I may actually have the programming chops to do that pretty quickly now.

Won't use Opera because the tab behavior just seems weird. Closing tabs never takes me to the one I want like Firefox does. *shrug*

I used to use it from 2005-2007ish.

The only extensions I have are Last Pass and NeoGAF Live Thread.

So uh anything you want it to do besides popping up a preview of links that link to an image?

That's pretty much all there is to it. The extension page details mentions a bunch of stuff about "Indirect image links are supported Facebook, DeviantArt, Google/Yahoo/Bing/Yandex images and sites running MediaWiki."

Not sure what that is, but I assume I've used it at one point or another.

It'd be awesome if it could somehow embed the image by clicking the link too, like on mobile gaf.

I'll take the rocket.
Despite the fact it'll blow up?

I've always had a soft spot for Opera, even though I haven't regularly used it in years. My GF still does. Too bad it'll probably become some weird Facebook adjunct now.

Ah, that kinda sucks,. Opera is my browser of choice on Windows and Android, and has been that way for years. (Though for some reason, I always use Chrome in Windows. I still like Opera better.)

My favorite thing about Opera is that if there's a message/alert box in Javascript (like "Don't leave this page! Click OK to keep viewing our advertisements! OK/Cancel") then you can still close the tab or exit the browser, since Opera stopped using Windows native boxes.

Awesome Possum, i <3 u dood.

(any chance of getting an option for fullsize/fit to screen or preview?)

Maybeh. We'll see. The jQuery plugin I'm using really isn't good at determining the optimal position for the hover image...

Facebook isn't developing a phone, they are developing a tablet device. Acquiring a browser for said device is a crucial piece of that puzzle.
