Rumor: Final Fantasy XV Launches September 30

Of course you haven't bought an FF game in a decade. They've only made one big one, and it was their one famous dud (due to a troubled development cycle).

It's less that the quality dived and more that their output of big mainline games slowed down to a crawl, and the brand was carried on only by smaller mediocre spinoff projects. That's a big fault of the company, and we all hate that this happened... But once we actually see more real flagship FFs games come out, then we can begin to judge the quality of this series.

Fair points.

I wager a lot of former fans just like me just aren't emotionally attached to the franchise anymore. I just have a wave apathy when I think of it now. Just don't care. Between the lack of mainline games during all this time, the half assed remakes and ports, the lack of quality games that aren't XIV? To be perfectly frank, SE have give us very little reason to care. How do you do an HD release of FFIX, its first real re-release EVER without fixing long battle transition load times and slow battle speed? How? How do you release FFVII on Steam and ps4 without a new English translation when that was one of the main things the game needed even more than brand spanking new graphics? HOW? How do you release FFV and VI on steam like that? HOW?

It gets to a point where everything the company does is just a disappointment. Then you no longer give a shit.

But trust me when I say this criticism is definitely justified. When the company can't even retranslate their most popular title, or release two classics on PC without cutting corners, or it takes ten years to make a single game, it's hard winning that trust back.

The tears and emotions I'll be feeling when i have those two games in my hand...will be something.

*as a bonus as its my favorite series I'll add kh3 to that

My God... in a few years I'm literally going to be able to sit copies of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, The Last Guardian, Shenmue III, Kingdom Hearts III, and RE:FF7 next to eachother. I would then take a picture and stuff it in a bottle before throwing it to the sea, in hopes that some time-warp maelstrom swallows it up and everyone in the past knows... that everything's going to be alright.

And that's very fair too.

I mean, has Square Enix fallen off? Have they scared away many fans?

Oh of course. Most of us think so.

I just think they can deliver a good flagship videogame again when they really make a big effort, even if it takes them 10 years to do it (lol). And as I argued, they haven't made a big play in a long time.

There's also the greater hope I have that Square Enix is righting the ship. They fell and stumbled going into the HD generation... And maybe they're not down for good. Maybe they're turning things around. They can't suck forever right? I look at how Disney had a crap decade in the 80s. Maybe FFXV is their Little Mermaid? This is my naive hope anyway ;)

I just place my faith in Hoori and DQ instead. The past ten years have made me less of a FF diehard and more of a DQ diehard. I know for a fact I'll enjoy DQ11.

Going to remake DQVII? You don't see a half assed effort there or with VIII. Meanwhile FF can't even retranslate their most popular game in the first monumental re-release that game has ever had.

One series is consistent, tries to appeal to a new generation while also catering to its old fans.

The other is Final Fantasy.

Oh come on. DQ is your new hope? I mean, the last mainline DQ we got was on handheld, and it was nowhere near its predecessor, story wise, character wise, and presentation wise. And don't get me started with the localization. They surely redo the translation, but to this point I'd say they just release the damn DQ7 remake with whatever translation they've got before 3DS becomes irrelevant. DQXI looks fantastic though, probably my most anticipated game in 2017.

In retrospect, I think last gen as a whole was a huge disappointment for old JRPG franchises: DQ and Shin Megamei Tensei without a mainline console title, FF struggling, Tales of becoming more and more irrelevant, Persona and KH skipping the whole generation (the longest generation). Even Tri-Ace could not be trusted anymore.

What a wait this has been.

Hopefully it'll be like the glorious first play of XII instead of the hype up and let down of XIII.
(it was pretty and pretty streamlined but way too streamlined to consider finishing...)

Fingers crossed.

I kinda wanted a summer release so that I'd have time off from school but whatever. I only play a handful of games a year. I'll make time for it.

I'll be 24, it's pretty crazy to think where I was in life when it was announced.

Sorry to go off topic, but your avatar always looks really dirty out of the corner of my eye.

Lol. It's just a fan art of Will Graham rescuing(stealing?) a dog.

I cut some of it out to focus on the facial expressions.

I was 15 on the announcement. Will be less than a month from turning 26 if it releases 9/30.

I was 9 years old and in Grade 5, and I still remember it. I'm graduating college next month and the game is still not out. What a world.

EDIT: whoops double post, my bad ;u;

DQ9 was a much better game than DQ8. A lot of its vignettes are pretty good and unlike 8 aren't recycled from past games. It was on handheld, but no DQ fan is going to give a shit about that. It didn't look as good as 8, but no DQ fan is going to give a shit about that.

In the past ten years, DQ fans have gotten a really good new entry (IX), full remakes of IV, V, VI, VII, and VIII, retranslations and new versions of I, II, and III, and an mmo.

Us DQ fans are eating.

If you have a problem with 9 being on handheld or the step down in presentation, chances are you're not much of a DQ fan. DQ has always been consistent. I don't need to place hopes in DQ because DQ never went down the drain. As for DQVIIr translation, it's not a big deal to me because I've already played it on my phone in Japanese.

Though it is true last console gen was horrible for jrpgs, that's only really a big deal if you only played console titles last gen.

At least Stella is a legit name.

It's also the name of two existing FF characters:

Not main characters, but still not new to the series.

Noctis shares similarity to Nacht of FF Dimensions, but that game is not a mainline title and the spelling is different enough for me to let it slide.

So is Luna.
To me, I think Luna works because it's also an RPG-ish name, with there already being a few Lunas throughout various fantasy games, particularly Lunar.

I went to high school with a girl called Luna.

It wasn't that rare here in Spain.
This is the only Luna I know

DQ fans are just easier to please. If one day mainline FF goes to handheld and has bad graphic, people will riot. Also, DQ9 is the first dq since 3 that doesn't have meaningful party members at all. I consider it a huge step back.

Also, if you can play DQVIIR in Japanese, why can't you do the same for FFVIIR? The original is alwasys better than the translated right?

About DQ8 vs DQ9...don't agree at all. I preferred the vignettes and overall story in 8 a lot more. 9 didn't even have a main cast. The presentation in 8 greatly enhanced the experience and it's not just graphics. The world in 8 was bigger and just much more fun to explore. There is a big difference. DQ9 also put a lot of its focus on a super grindy postgame with randomly generated dungeons. DQ8 had a nice postgame story in addition to its number of sidequests. DQ9 has a lot too, but honestly I ended up getting burned out due to several factors...

Tribalist rpg wars are boring. Just play everything that is good; no need to pick sides for life.

Oh, I figure it out when I actually look at it. There's just a split second of, "what the...", when I catch it out of the corner of my eye.

I'm a lifelong DQ fan, and I totally disagree with him.

The last proper DQ game we got in the West was 9, and IMO, it's the weakest entry since DQ2. I can't speak to how X is, but I imagine I'd have about as much love for it as I do FFXI or FFXIV.

I am however hopeful that DQXI will be a return to the direction 4-8 were going, with stronger story and characters each time around, and being a nice-looking game, which the series has generally been, aside from DQ7 (though the 3DS version is much better).

While I wasn't really a fan of XIII-2 (because the writing was awful) and LR was horseshit, I will always look back at XIII very fondly. And I'm hella hyped for XV. Even though I also thought Type-0 was one of the worst FF games ever. The mainline games are always an unforgettable experience for me.

in the US, yes.

worldwide releases have been on fridays before. Hitman just launched on Friday. Nintendo games typically launch on friday iirc.

I thought there was an industry shift to try and release games on Fridays instead of Tuesdays from now on in general? It seems like a slow shift but I thought it was one that is happening. I could be making shit up though. I just recall reading it somewhere

I would be okay with that. Friday is just a much better day to release games.

lmao, this post has inspired me

I agree. I would love for Friday releases but I am super used to Tuesday releases so either is fine with me until I graduate in December lol

Then I want it to be Fridays when I am out in the real world

Oh, I can definitely play FFVII in Japanese. It doesn't change my point though. Most English speaking FF fans don't know Japanese. Because I can read JP, that doesn't really excuse SE's lack of effort in a genuine retranslation, which was sorely needed.

DQ characters vary from game to game. IV has very strong characters. V has weaker characters but a stronger overall story, VI's characters aren't too noteworthy, but VII's characters are great and extremely developed. VIII's cast, while admittedly probably too small, is overall pretty great besides Angelo, who sucks. Basically, each DQ has different things depending on how the story is written. DQ4 is all about the characters, whereas V's are less developed so the game can concentrate more on story and plot and the main character's journey. IX doesn't have a large emphasis on the main cast but it's all about the vignettes. IX not having a developed cast like IV or VIII shouldn't be inherently seen as a flaw. It's just a different DQ with different priorities.

VIII's battle system is slow as molasses for a series known for twenty second battles, its customization was highly limiting especially after VII, it literally reused story lines from past games, and it has horrendous pacing issues due to padding (getting the ship for example). Its dungeons are really small and lacking. VIII is really flawed. IX is much better as a game, though I prefer VIII's story and characters.

"Discovery of a cute animal" feature

Taji received Tabata's permission to show off a new "monster" (or more like cute, furry creature):

If you're wondering why there's a (trollish) picture of Tabata: there's a conversation going on between Taji and Tabata about what Taji's allowed to show and not allowed to show before Uncovered. If you're also wondering why Taji took a week off; he's been talking with people to gather some information and sneak previews about what Square Enix plan to show at Uncovered. If I read correctly, we can expect 3 more updates similar to this "sneak preview."

I can't believe they revealed the game's final boss in a random capture. This... purrson already looks more promising than the Orphan and Aulstyne.

As someone already out in the real world, a Friday release would be perfect for me. I'm absolutely going to take the day off, so having a three-day weekend to envelop myself in this game sounds excellent.

Yeah, there's no question that whatever day this drops, I am taking that day off, and possibly others after. If it's a Friday, that's much simpler.
