I don't think God of War needs a 'deep' protagonist to be good. If you're playing God of War because you're looking for a good story, then you're looking in the wrong place. It needs polish, accessible combat mechanics, top-notch presentation, and strong pacing between enemies, navigation, and puzzles.
He is adding something. I also agree with him. Kratos is an awful, extremely one dimensional character. They need a new protagonist now that his story is finished.
While I agree that the series need a more defined direction, I do not agree on his posts with buzz words, trying to look like as if he has played all the game in the series and after finishing them all he has come to the conclusion that David Jaffe created all of the three games and is a 12 year old and that every one who play games is a 12 year old.
That is not adding something to the conversation. If you've played the game, you very well know what parts of it are good and what parts of it are bad. Not specifying them and talking about Legacy of Kain half of the post doesn't make him adding something to this thread.

Now this is adding something to the conversation and this is a post I can agree with wholeheartedly: providing where the flaw is according to his eyes instead of spewing out "LEGACY OF KAIN IS SO AWESOME! YOU ARE ALL 12 YEAR OLDS! WHY DID DAVID JAFFE WORK ON GOD OF WAR 3? WAAAHHHH!!!"
Trolls, dragons, dwarves, giants - there would be plenty of material, but I would prefer something that hasn't been done before. Egyptian or Sumerian have the potential of being fucking awesome.
Yeah Egyptian could be cool too. Maybe not 'brutal' enough aesthetics though (nordic would be the mos brutal setting though)
Yes Sony, continue milking the series that was never enjoyable in the first place.
David Jaffe has the maturity of a twelve year old. Apparently most gamers do as well. Kratos is a juvenile, masturbatory preteen wet dream of what twelve year olds think is cool. There is having a poorly written and unlikable protagonist, and then there is insulting the audiences intelligence. God of War does both these things.
i enjoy the series and i am 38y.o. It is okay that you do hate it so much, kind of a juvenile behaviour if you ask me, but then why do not skip anything related to GoW like this thread?
Dear god no, Uncharteds multiplayer is unnecessary. "Lets add deathmatch and CTF so we can sell map packs and multiplayer skins as DLC".
Someone needs to come up with something else to do with single player games to expand the life of them and prevent people from trading them back to Gamestop. I hope Sony Santa Monica comes up with something and doesn't just do the same lazy solution everyone else is.
Eh. I hear you, but the entire point of Kratos is to have extremely simple-minded motivations (RARGH KILL) so that the developers can worry about just driving the game forward.

Uncharted 2's multiplayer is excellent, though, and does a lot of cool new things with the genre.
God of War, though? It's completely melee-based combat. I can't imagine that working in competitive multiplayer. Co-op, on the other hand, could be neat if done properly, I suppose.
And God of War 2 already had a good way to expand the life of the game: a proper goddamn New Game+, which was missing from GoW3 for some stupid reason.
Sony ran a survey and Kratos was like, the first or second favorite character of the brand so I don't see them making a GoW without Kratos ( which is a good thing, fuck the haters ).
They don't really have much to work with. Granted, the Greek gods are pretty ripe for storytelling in videogames. But then they have to muck it up with that whiny annoying bitch Kratos.
He belongs in the Nomura emo gallery. Just give him a spiky wig and some belts or something.

I don't think there were any 3rd person shooters with solid online multiplayer out on the PS3 at the time Uncharted 2 came out. For me it was necessary as it filled a Gears of War void left from selling my 360.
When a company creates a game, for this generation, that lacks any form of online mode and after beating the campaign I don't feel the need to sell my game, then I will salute them.
Forgot about Mass Effect, wooooops.
I'm also kind of confused about all of the analogies to Call of Duty, etc. Doesn't the quote mention co-op? I don't understand why people would hate the ability to team up against the computer with friends being added on, it's not like there are many games sporting that already - outside of killing zombies in a FPS.

When people debate the GoW series from a gameplay perspective, you'll usually find them split into two camps; those who think it's shallow, restrictive and linear, and those who adore how exaggerated and over the top the action is, and how it offers an unmatched spectacle in the gaming space.
Now Kratos? It's really hard to make a case for the guy. With each iteration is became harder and harder not only to give a fuck about his cause, but to listen to him (sometimes to the point of not picking the controller up when I have the time for a session). So in my case, having a character like him was quite detrimental to my experience and enjoyment.
Now I know that they've state that Kratos' saga has ended with 3, and that we may be introduced to a new protagonist, but I really hope that the team behind 4 aren't hung on the same philosophy when they're creating their new lead. I think we can still have our ultra violent, extremely raging, sometimes verging on self-parody protagonist with a different character template. I honestly believe that there's room for likability, charm, and dare I say wit(?) among those character requirements, which Kratos obviously doesn't have a lick of.
Get the fuck out of here. No seriously, if you have nothing to add to the conversation then don't post here. Keep that bullshit blog to yourself and keep the blind hate to yourself. Clearly you don't know jackshit about the game or know who is working on them to make a fanboyish comment like that.
I disagree with them, then, that the story ought to be 'important.'
God of War 3's story was upsettingly bad (as opposed to pleasingly simple) precisely because it tried to be more ambitious and tried to be all about redemption and about Kratos learning to protect someone, et cetera.
The GoW franchise shouldn't aim so high, story-wise. Just wind Kratos up with anger, point him in a direction, and let him speed off thataway. Any attempt to give him an actual character arc is going to fail hard. God of War 2 is the best in the series precisely because the story is just Kratos doing stuff and killing stuff on his journey, and all that leaves far more room for fun.
I'm not against good stories in games, mind you - Silent Hill 2 is one of my very favorites - but God of War isn't the place to do it.
I don't want to play as another goody twoshoes. I like my GoW protagonist as the sociopathic, hateful and violence-obsessed asshole he is. Bring me more Kratos, Sony. I need my dose of virtual hatred and sociopathy.
Yep. Brilliant, emotionless, over-the-top story and combat system. Tired of everything being Call of Duty. At least here it makes sense for the storyline to be fucking crazy. Very fluid combat system that desperately lacks in current action-adventure hack-and-slash titles (hell, there barely are any this generation, and everything else is getting a reboot).
It needs replayability value, and just making a single-player story isn't doing it especially with the lackluster challenge mode. Increasing the length of story doesn't do anything if you see if coming from miles away. Sex scenes just feel pathetic now and somewhat unnecessary (made some sense in God of War 3 though storywise but could've been avoided easily) and the similarity in all three games is making it to predictable i.e. "loses power, goes to hell, comes back from hell, fucks a god in the ass, creates havoc, fucks up the entire system, nothing good comes out of it".
As much as I love God of War 3, I don't see a reason to replay it since it was like a nice epic movie. I would have to have someone else come over to play it cause I just love seeing that game being played.
In the ideal world, they would pick up the great combat system, puzzles and epic battle and give it a new facelift. Everything is fucked by the end of God of War 3 and they need a new direction. I would still buy it and play the shit outta it though!

I don't play GoW for a Godfather 2 story experience or deep characters. The stories and characters in GoW are fine for what's been set out to be accomplished. Trying to "improve" upon that I think is a distraction.
I don't need all my games to be high art. I love Once Upon a Time in the West. I also love Commando. Both for very different reasons.
And you don't have to. Look at someone like Conan. He's rather dumb, he's primitive, he's sexist, he's violent - but he also has charm. Kratos has none. Zilch. He's a character you'd like to punch, not play as.

Yet Conan tried to rip GOW out and fell flat on the floor, crying. It's about gameplay for me and no matter how much of an asshole Kratos is, the gameplay is unmatched.

My role on MK did not extend beyond giving feedback on the way Kratos animates and moves. I gave the MK team comments in regards to what Kratos should act like and what he should not do. This did not take the full year since GOW 3 came out, so yes, I have been working on something new. As you can guess I cannot really talk about it right now until we make it official. I can say however that the current character that I am animating is a blast to work on. I haven't quite woked on a chacter such as this before!
Really. This guy put so much effort in God Of War 2. It was ridiculous.
48 hours before E3. He doesn't look very healthy.
I don't know what the real reason was why he was leaving SCEA, but this could be the reason. I remember him saying in the "GOW2 Making Of" that he hasn't slept for a couple of days just to make sure the game gets really good. Sure a lot of developers will do this but i think this guy has overdone it.
Yeah, Cory Barlog pulled his heart out in God of War 2 and made a one-hit-wonder a continuing franchise by branching the stories and providing the best ending cliffhanger of it's time.

I remember seeing behind the scenes where Corey was talking to the producers and managers about GOW2. He showed some footage, then started giving crazy orginal idea's to spice up the gameplay. The producer kept saying "Corey we can't do that" and Cory kept ignoring him. The producer got 'effin pissed off.

Seen all movies. Seen (and own) every episode of the animated series. Read a lot of comics. Great character, yes, but his videogame counterpart is a sluggish grunt that tried to make a name for itself by copying elements of God of War and failing miserably. Dante's Inferno is a good example of coming close to God of War formula; Conan isn't.
i always enjoyed GoW series because of the setting, Greece, and mythology, being spectacular, accesible gameplay and instant fun. There are other options out there for deeper gameplay or better story. And i hope this one keeps building on that, mythology, greek, roman , nordic, spectacular cities and locations etc....
Can have a better character development? Welcome if so, but not necessary for me.
I wouldn't mind playing as young Zeus. His side of the story is fucking awesome. Plus, the sex scene will make sense for a change especially when he won't pull out on time and give birth to a bastard. lol.

I haven't played Uncharteds multiplayer but I'm sure it's fine. I just don't like the trend of adding multiplayer to single player games. We don't need more games with Deathmatch and CTF.
